Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Video Game Finals Commentator

We all hated Nick last year...this year I thought Nick was great. He has begun integrating himself into the Pokemon community.

The stuff he says on stage is straight from the games. He is a performer...he is the Pokemon Stadium Commentator...that is his shtick...that is his job...

He even looks like a person pulled straight from a Pokemon game.

Next time...go up to him and get to know him off the stage...Nick is a great guy and and huge goof ball.

I wish I had a photo of him from the Staff Dinner in Hawaii in his cheesy fake mustache..he looked like the Pringles Can guy

Nick's comments made the video game "experience" as real as it can be!! It's kind of like what EA has done with Madden, but in reverse. EA has taken a "real" sport with commentary and turned it into a VG. TPC has taken commentary from the VG and made it live. Yes, some of the comments are a bit repetitive, but that's part of the "charm" of a video game. So, the question then is-- should the experience live seem like a natural extension of a video game or not??

I vote yes and think that Nick is tops!! :thumb:

Best quote I heard all tournament:

Nick: "You can cut the tension with a knife!"
Some guy in the crowd: "I'll cut you with a knife!"
^ Wow whats the matter trainer?

I like nick because no one else in the pokemon company could do his job. This year though, it seemed scripted. How many times did you hear that now famous quote? Whats the matter trainer? seemed to be said to often.

I dont like commentators in general. Hired people are rarely sincere. I hated the Pokemon emcees from the last two (three?) years. Dave or an other pokemon company rep. could definatly do a better job. Nick's a good exception.

And to anyone who thinks VGC is boring: Thats definately why its grown tremendously over three years.

Also, I think Nick's performance comes off a lot better in person than in video. At the event, this type of commentary is much more effective when people are in the moment and don't know the outcome ahead of time. This is very different from the type of commentary you would do if you were doing a recap after the event. Imagine if someone did a commentary of a movie they had never seen before-that's what this is like.

I think that having a commenter is a great idea and that someone did the job. I do not know the person or have met him, but I think that what he did was a big boost in the vg scene.
How else is the vg scene going to grow without support or recognition?
Look at it from these two points of view:
1. At least the vgc is a part of worlds and brings in more people who share one common interest, fun competition among people who play the card game AND the video game.
2. If you have absolutely no clue as to what it is your watching on the screen other then it is a Pokemon game, how long will you continue to be interested in it?

I think that a live person doing the commentary is way better then in the video games. At least it goes to show that in a "sport" such as this that adding in a "sportscaster" brings the experiance in a more realistic manner, and a small touch of professionalism.

I would love to have this guy come to one of my tournaments- he would defenitly add more spice to the action.

Spot on Benzo! Could not have been better said.
I am sure that he is going to have a whole lot more to talk about with pokemon Black and White coming out soon. new abilitys, pokemon, moves, etc.

Nick - you sir have turned your job from an Emcee to a sports commentator.

Well hello!

Thanks for all the feedback guys, even though it was completely indirect and this halfway counts as eavesdropping on my part. :) You know I'm ALWAYS looking for feedback on how well the events go, and what I can change personally. The whole emcee bag never came with a manual so it's really great to hear what went well and what tanked. I'd love to hear more suggestions too... having a feeling that B&W will be much, much bigger than anything so far. And for your information, yes, I do play. :)

By the way Benzo, I live in Southern Washington State. Lemme know when you have a tournament- I'd love to come say hi.

Whoever said the announcer for the VGC was lame is dead wrong. Nick is the best announcer since the Stadium guy, which is saying something. I thoroughly enjoyed him announcing abilities and hope that PUI keeps him for as long as he would like to have the job.
