Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Voltage Vortex + Future Knights

I bought both of these decks, and as a new player I am kind of lost on how to put them together to make a good deck.

Can anyone help me out?

I appreciate it !

I bought both of these decks, and as a new player I am kind of lost on how to put them together to make a good deck.

Can anyone help me out?

I appreciate it !

Here's how I would combine those 2 decks:

Pokemon (19)
3 Tynamo
2 Eelektrik
2 Zekrom
2 Emolga
1 Druddigon
2 Audino
2 Axew
2 Fraxure
2 Sneasel/Scraggy
1 Weavile/Scrafty

Trainers (21)
2 Professor Juniper
2 Bianca
1 N
4 Pokemon Communication
2 Level Ball
2 Great Ball
3 Energy Search
2 Potion
2 Switch
1 Super Rod

Energy (20)
14 Lightning Energy
6 Darkness Energy

This list should get you off to a good start. By no means would this list be considered competitive, but at least you have something to work with. By far, the strongest cards in this list are the Zekrom and Eelektrik cards. In fact, these two cards are the basis of one of the best decks in the format right now, Zekeels. The strategy of a Zekeels deck is to cycle through many basic attackers, powering them up in one turn using Eelektrik's Dynamotor Ability. I'm not saying that you should invest a ton of money to get all the cards you need for Zekeels, but I do want to give you an idea of what to work toward.

So what should you do to improve this list? Let's say that you only had a little bit of money/cards for trade to try and improve this list. What would you do? Well there are a couple things:
  • First, I'd worry about getting some better attackers for the deck. Fraxure, Weavile/Scrafty, and Audino are in the list because these two theme decks don't have very many good attackers. You're stuck with using the best you have. Well, lucky for you, Zekeels has some popular attackers that are relatively easy to get your hands on. Thundurus EPO is a good addition, as its Charge attack sets you up rather well (gets the energy flowing). Tornadus EPO is also a relatively cheap option for you to include. Another Zekrom isn't a bad choice, since its Bolt Stike is one of the most powerful attacks in the game; Zekrom was released in so many different forms that they're really cheap to get your hands on.
  • Because this is going to be a budget deck, I'm going to bump your Tynamo and Eelektrik count up to 4-4. They're really easy to get your hands on. I'm also going to include 1 copy of a card that many people overlook: Stunfisk NVI (the fighting one). While it's not your best choice, he's a different type of attacker (Fighting), and has the chance of paralysis.
  • Next, you need some draw supporters to go into this deck. The more you play, the more you'll realize that being able to draw cards is really good. Having a new draw supporter to use every turn is really important in many of the games you will play. Lucky for you, three of the best draw support options in the format (Professor Juniper, Professor Oak's New Theory, and N) are all really cheap now because they were released in multiple sets.
  • I'm taking out the Darkness type completely from your deck. For a card like Eelektrik, having consistent energy in the deck is a big plus, because you'll always be discarding the right type of energy for you to Dynamotor back onto your benched Pokemon. That's not to say that more advanced players won't put a different type in this deck (I have tried experimenting with other types), but I think that a mono-type deck is easier to play for a relatively new player.
So here's a modified list of the deck I posted above. This would be an improved version that would cost less than $25 to obtain the extra cards for.

Pokemon (19)
4 Tynamo
4 Eelektrik
3 Zekrom
1 Emolga
1 Stunfisk (Fighting type)
1 Druddigon
2 Thundurus
2 Tornadus

Trainers (26)
4 Professor Juniper
2 Professor Oak's New Theory
2 Bianca
4 N
4 Pokemon Communication
2 Level Ball
2 Great Ball
2 Potion
2 Switch
2 Super Rod

Energy (16)
16 Lightning Energy

Now that you have an improved decklist, what's next? As you play more, you'll realize that some cards are very strong, while others are slightly weaker. Here are additional options that you have for modifying this deck. When you get the chance, take a look at what these cards do, and figure out what you could take out for a couple copies of each of these cards. Keep in mind that some of these cards below can get rather expensive, but I want to let you know what the best options for this deck are:
  • Mewtwo EX
  • Tornadus EX
  • Pokemon Catcher
  • Junk Arm
  • Eviolite
  • Pluspower
  • Double Colorless Energy
I hope this post gives you some direction on where you should take your deck, and ultimately help you improve as a player.

If you see any in a shop there's a tin with Zekrom EX in it. Not the best of the EX cards, but it would give your deck an instant power boost very easily. If you can find a League nearby, many people will give new players some decent trainer cards to get them going too.
