There's plenty of strategy when you have to chop down that theme deck down to forty cards. We've been doing theme deck challenges wrong this whole time imo.

There really isn't. I remember last year when we all had the same Fossil theme deck, all the decks were the same even after cutting to 40. Levi and I had a 2 card difference, and it was like 2 more F vs 2 more G or something similar.
