What do you think are the most prized Pokémon cards?

Just want to quickly clarify the figure for the most recent Illustrator sale, just because I'm sure it will be quoted for years to come, and I'd rather it quoted correctly. The price [including the Japanese middleman fee] was just over 15K in USD.

Sorry Jason! I did not account for the middle man fees

No no no, I just wanted to clarify because the community like to have a certain number to quote, and having the right one out from the start is best :)

Shopping Mall Japan also use their own modified exchange rate. That's how they appear to be a cheap middleman, but aren't in reality.

Anyways I'll let this get back on topic :)

I think this thread should be re-named "Which cards would you save first if your house caught on fire?"

That, in my opinion, is the fastest way to figure out which cards a collector likes the most.

I have my collection organized into four binders, one tub and one small box, one tin, and one mini portfolio. I'll be able to grab them pretty fast. - This is going to change soon though.

In a Boundaries Crossed booster pack, I got two rares and one ultra rare Pokémon card. I got a reverse holofoil Victini, White Kyurem EX and a rare trainer card, I forget which one though. This is my best buy. I also got a $30 card in a $5 pack, a shiny Golurk.

Shiny Golurk

That's cheap. If you go to www.collectorscache.com you can find any Pokémon card there to buy. The prices there are decided by rarity and collectability. No secret rare Pokémon card is worth less than $25. On the website Golurk is worth a lot more than that.
You can rate the price of a card by going between these three websites;
www.collectorscache.com
www.amazon.com
www.ebay.com

All in one, the card I mentioned and others alike, are worth a lot more than what you paid. Trying to not take your words as an insult, Golurk is one of my favorite Unova Pokémon. I was so happy when I got it.

The story behind that card is, I got a pack. After I opened the pack I said "Aw cool!" and put the cards back in the original pack, never really noticing anything. Then, a day later, I was puting the pack into my collection, numerical order by the set number (botom right on card), as usual, and noticed that my cool looking holofoil Golurk wasn't with the rest of the cards of the same type. Previously, cards were put in order by their rarity, now they're put in order by type and Pokédex no. Anyway, as I put it in the correct slot on the page I noticed "Hay, why is he after the trainers?" so I looked at his number again. My heart was pounding as my mind is racing through the possibilities. The number said 150/149. I then recalled a time when I was on www.pokemon.com, the news/events page was buzzling with the new Next Destinies expansion with the picture of the 'shiny' Emboar and how its number was over the original set number. The bottom of any of these cards say "This Pokémon is a different color than usual. It is very hard to find." I originally thought the Next Destinies expansion was the only expansion to have those. I looked on www.collectorscache.com and found all the others currently in production. I already knew and still know of the very similar "Shining" Pokémon cards of the Neo Revelation and Neo Discovery expansions.

I have been collecting Pokémon cards for a long time now. I am not that new to this.

I don't think elam was trying to insult you at all. It's still really cool to get a $10 card in a $5 pack.

But Shiny Golurk isn't worth $30. They are easily obtainable at $10 with only a small amount of waiting time.

Plus, CC has Shiny Golurk at $12.99..
And CC bases their prices like the rest of the market: Supply and Demand
Also, most shinies are worth less than $25. Most are significantly under that price point.

And many of us are not new to this. But you don't really help your case for being knowledgeable by not knowing that the recent sets have secret rares.

I could give you 10+ current eBay links for Shiny Golurk's going for $10. I haven't seen any sell for over $15 since the release of the BC set.

I don't think elam was trying to insult you by any means, he was just letting you know that your Golurk is not worth as much as you stated. I believe you have a lot of sentimental value for this card, which is why you value it so highly.

Sentimental value is a good thing though, I have quite a few cards myself that I hold in high esteem. The Golurk is just unfortunately not worth $30, but it was definitely still a great pull from a $5 pack.

Sentimental value is a fantastic thing. Collecting to rack up a cash value sucks. It won't last.
The real value in collecting is putting together something you are proud of and care for.

Keep the card. No one will ever offer you $30 for it, assuming that's your sell point. And that is perfectly aceptable. We all have cards we just wouldn't let go unless a ridiculous price point was offered on it.

1. English Vs. Set

2. PR Raichu

3. English Trophies

4. Distributor Promos

5. Sample Set

Since I only collect English cards, those in order, are the ones I prize the most.
