What makes a deck 'fun' to play?

No offense to anyone, but I think mewtric is the most boring deck to play.

Go ahead and flame me and say that i just don't know how to play it...but I think it's so boring to just sit there and disconnect over and over
I have to agree. It's also boring to play against for many decks.

Well, at the moment the trainer card pool stinks severely. I mean Fieldworker, Billl's and Professor Birch don't stand a chance against Admin, Steven's and Copycat... We need better trainers!!
Holon supporters are fun to play, and they're comboriffic with Tranciever or Pokemon like Chimecho or Mawile.

Mewtric can be very complicated if you play it well. Any deck which can win is fun for me. The whole thing in Pokemon is that you want to find the best 60 cards and get those cards to win the game. Its a puzzle winning a tournament, and if you can figure out how to do it then its a lot of fun.

A "fun deck" is different then "having fun playing a deck." Honestly, most "fun" decks give me headaches when playing because I get into ruts where I can't win. A property of a deck being good is usually almost always having outs. I don't know about you masochists, but losing isn't fun.

FUN=

Playing against Mewtric with a blank Vibrava δ on the bench and them using Megashot to knock out a Flygonδ instead of using disconnect.

"That sucks. Okay, evolve into Fearow, use delta sign for Trapinch, candy to Flygon, attach and supply, play transciever for a researcher, get flygon, evolve vibrava, another supply, and use swift for 60. gg" (Its actually happened)

And thats why you dont stop using disconnect.

I've found that a fun deck is usually one which uses an unorthodox Pokemon combination or strategy to win. Not that all decks that have that particular combination are fun. One I made back around when Neo Destiny came out, with Cleffa and Unowns as the only Pokemon... it won a lot. In Unlimited, it could go up against even Chansey decks just fine. But it wasn't much fun taking 5 minute turns, which was about the average turn length at normal playing speed. Its only saving grace was that playing a winning deck that had barely-used cards like Blaine's Quiz #3, Revive, and Here Comes Team Rocket! in it as parts of the core strategy was kind of fun.

My most recent Unlimited deck, with Mr. Mime and Lt. Surge's Raticate... that's an example of a fun, unorthodox deck that was good enough to challenge at most tournaments I played in.

More recently, I've had a lot of fun with my Ho-oh ex deck because it's got a few "surprises up its sleeve" but it isn't too time-consuming to think of what to do in a particular situation, unlike my old Unown deck. I imagine Golem or Whiscash decks are fun, because of the unorthodox way you can force your opponent to think about whether it's good to attack or not.

Another thing... I think a deck isn't fun if it can't put up a good showing against competitive decks. It isn't fun to be blown out consistantly. But it also isn't fun to consistantly blow out other people in the traditional way, overpowering them with the same strategy over and over. Basically, I find that fun decks are decks that allow BOTH players to have fun.

Fun...

Does anybody know the Spongebob song here (sorry if you hate spongebob, I did at first too):

F = for friends that do stuff together
U = for you and me
N = for anyplace and anywhere and anytime
Here in the deep blue sea.

That's what I think of decks too, so let me explain:
I think a deck is fun if:

  • If you can play it and make friends with other Pokemon-freaks
  • If you can share the fun with other players
  • If it can be used anywhere against any opponent
  • and at last: If it has some strategies that make a turn long, and a combo hard to understand, but only if it works

If you can't follow me... Don't worry... I said this so many times before to a lot of players, and a lot can't understand what I mean, so you're not the only one.

I know, but I can't use a Holon Engine in everything. There def are issues with the Holon Engine, like no mentoring for Basic Pokemon with 100+ HP (makes it useless in MewTric when u want Deoxys ex EM), and sometimes you cannot use energies that Chimecho d can retrieve or don't have the room for it). And also there is no way to shuffle your (or your opponents) hand into the deck again. But in many decks, yes, the Holon Engine is fine, but just not everything.

For me, it is not the decks that are fun, but the games that are fun.

Like someone stated here earlier, I love games when I am against a very tough opponent and it is always such a close game with high tempo, each player trying to out-play the other with neither backing down. That is the best part of the TCG, playing against amazing people and having an amazing time.

I have fun every time I play... I guess that's because we rarely play here...

There's no tournaments at all...

Umm, off-topic: I recently took the Professor test and passed, how can we hold sanctioned tourneys out here?

I live in South Korea, but there is an ARMY Post and they have Sanctioned Magic tourneys there, so I'm pretty sure we should be able to have Pokemon tourneys too...

If anyone can help please PM me or post a reply... thanks...

Also, Steve Irwin died today :( I'm going to miss him...

Sorry for going off-topic...

Peace...
