Where to find players?

Hey pokegym, I've got a question about running leagues.

I live in Irving, Texas, and while I know that there are plenty of players scattered throughout North Texas, I don't know of any other players besides myself here in Irving.

So I'm going to be 18 soon, and I'd love to start up a league here, but I'd like to know how to find players to join it. Suggestions?

Community boards, interwebz, and word of mouth. If you can get the approval of the school board and have somebody over the age of 25-ish, schools and libraries are excellent sources for advertisement.

Well my school district has 4 high schools, and out of the 4, I am the only one I know of that plays the TCG. I know a few trading card game players in local community colleges, but they only play Magic. The younger players (middle or high school) typically only play Yugioh. So I'm having trouble just finding players around my community.

Not sure about the internet. Where would be a good place to look?

Also, I know of a pokemon professor who lives in Irving, but I hardly ever see him at league, and he said something about getting one started up but had trouble. Not really sure where to go from here.

You never know until you try advertising. Just getting a flyer up on school message boards is usually enough to shake some wheat out.

Interwebz? Check the local radio stations, newspapers, and television channels. Most will have some sort of community events board. Hit up the Pokemon boards, all of them that you can find. Think outside of the box, but keep it local.

If it's worth it to you, try advertising a free tourney/ league. I'm sure you could get a bunch of starter-deck playin' kids in if they can win a couple of packs or another starter deck. Maybe find a HGSS trainer kit or something. As for where to advertise- I would suggest staying away from evangelical churchboards and try ur closest hobby store. If no such place exists within a reasonable drive, try the local rec center or ymca or other such place. If "other place" is run by aformentioned evangelical types, I suggest moving to a more reasonable area of the country.

Hmm, well my brother claims that there are some local gaming/comic book stores, so I suppose those places wouldn't be a bad choice.

I'm actually from Grand Prairie, TX (just down the road).

I haven't played since the Neo Destiny era and am looking for a group to start playing with.

I live in Coppell, TX, and drive all the way to Garland to play in their league. Irving would be a 10-15 minute drive for me. Hope you get it done. PM me if you need any help.
