I advise you to look up viral marketing.
wikipedia said:
Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that seek to exploit pre-existing social networks to produce exponential increases in brand awareness, through viral processes similar to the spread of an epidemic.

myspace isnt a social network? lol

the entire strategy of marketing for the Wii has been viral marketing. every single announcement they have made, two days later EVERYONE on the internet is talking about it. the very essence of the Wii's marketing campaign has been viral

apparently its you that doesnt quite know how viral marketing works ;)

The key word there is EXPLOIT. In viral marketing, the key is that the people don't know that they are pawns in spreading the word about a product. Wikipedia's article on viral marketing isn't a very good article and Wikipedia should NEVER be your only argument, because it's a free editing process.

ex‧ploit2  /ɪkˈsplɔɪt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ik-sploit] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

–verb (used with object) 1. to utilize, esp. for profit; turn to practical account: to exploit a business opportunity.
2. to use selfishly for one's own ends: employers who exploit their workers.
3. to advance or further through exploitation; promote: He exploited his new movie through a series of guest appearances.

Exploiting something doesn't mean the people/means being exploited are oblivious to their use.

i only chose wikipedia becaue it had the most complete and accurate published definition of the term

you wanna go with elsewhere well then http://www.google.com/search?client...n&q=define:viral+marketing&btnG=Google+Search

as tagrineth pointed out, exploitng is taking advantage of. it doesnt rule out the people you're taking advantage of being unaware of it

Nintendo's not the only game system developer to use viral marketing recently, either. the PSP White ad Sony put out in Europe (with the black woman and the white woman), despite any statements of "apology" from Sony, was VERY much viral marketing, because it acomplished exactly what Sony wanted it to do: to get people talking about the PSP
