Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Will the XY TCG era be longer than the BW era?

Based solely upon the names of the sets, yes, Platinum really was a separate block.

Diamond and Pearl
DP Mysterious Treasures
DP Secret Wonders
DP Great Encounters
DP Majestic Dawn
DP Legends Awakened
DP Stormfront
Platinum
Plat Rising Rivals
Plat Supreme Victors
Plat Arceus

I stand corrected; I looked up images of the boosters (of which I purchased very, very few) and I see now that I was mistaken.

...

This makes the set block prefix even more unwieldy.

DP through Stormfront the pinnacle of Pokémon-TCG play. Will the game ever get fun like that again?

DP-Stormfront was pretty good overall, with some really interesting mechanics and more balanced power across rarities (though power creep was noticeable at SF). The main problem was they put 2 incredibly powerful Stage 2s in the same evo line, making them too easy to play together (Gallade and Gardevoir for those who weren't around / haven't heard terrible stories :p)

I'd happily replay that whole series minus those 2 cards... that or Deoxys-Power Keepers ;)

I have high hopes for XY! If it meets these hopes I'd happily have it last longer that B&W (my least favourite card series) and I'll get back into competitive Pokemon and buy boxes again!

The benefit of the Gardy/Gallade format was the HUGE skill factor in every game. Yes, there wasn't lots of diversity, but the skill required to do well was immense. That really should be the goal of every format, and I'd prefer a skill based format where in-game skill and deckbuilding matter the most, rather than a diverse format where it's mostly Rock-Paper-Scissors (like now!).

I recognize the irony in insulting RPS considering the prevalence of Team Galactic's Wager in Gardy/Gallade!

GG wasn't all that popular by that point as it lost DRE and a lot of speed with it when they rotated to DP-on (with LA being the new set at when rotation hit).

SF really shined when SPs started getting released in Platinum.

This is a problematic misconception.

There are many ways of expressing problem formats. One problem format is "Rock-Paper-Scissor" or the RPS format. Pokémon is Pokémon; when a format is properly balanced, it isn't truly RPS. You'll have some favorable match-ups and some unfavorable, but if you build and play your deck well, you won't lose just because of the bad match-up.

Another problem format is the "Chess" format, where everyone has nearly identical decks... and it actually reduces the overall skill in the game. How so? Because adjusting to a diverse format is one of the major skills in Pokémon. If both players have the same deck... how much more important did luck of the draw and coin flips become?

Pokémon shouldn't be RPS or Chess... it should be Pokémon.

You are right that the "ideal" format would be one with diversity but not truly RPS. However, given an choice between to evils, I believe a "chess" format is by far preferable.

Given a choice between the two, I choose "neither"; I won't die for lack of playing Pokémon.
