So, I know I'm really jumping the gun on this one, but I've been looking around for the format for the 2011 World Championships for the Video Game. I like to get a good start and begin planning out my team.

I was looking around on Bulbapedia and came across this article: Bulbapedia 2011 World Championship.

Am I reading it correctly that only Pokemon from Black and White can be played? And none from the previous 4 generations can be played.

And if that is true, wow. Anyone else feeling a mix of relief and worry with this?

That is correct. This info has been around for quite some time, except the article is incorrect - as the battles will use the "Tournament Play" option on Black & White using the infrared on the games.

So Pokemon from #495 - #642 and #645 can be used.
Double Battle
Bring 6, pick 4

And with the "Tournament Play" option, there won't be any preview of your opponent's team like the in-game infared and wifi connection.

This is kind of bad. Vaporeon and Pidgeot are really hard for me to replace in any battle.

I'm having mixed feelings. I'm glad I don't have to do alot of research and planing with 600+ pokemon, but I can't use Gallade. Or use some of the other gen stuff I have sitting in my Boxes ready to go.

It's pretty easy. You can expect to see at least Zapdos, Snolax and Gengar. It'll be hard for m e because I don't know anything about the new gen.

With less pokemon, less planning is required. Also there are less strategy's to plan ahead for. Right now Trick Room, Tailwind, and Taunt are the big things to watch for (Thanks to the Ability Teasing Heart)

But then again, the good old POWERHOUSE teams do just fine - Shandera (Commonly used with Focus sash) is highly used for it's high special attack power.

Some pokemon i want to see get some spot light are Excadrill with the massive power and speed with sandstorm in play, and Ulgamoth with awesome special attack and special defenses, synthesis for staying power, and some great moves like Fire dance/heat wave and Bug buzz - it's only fear is Rcok slide (a very common move).

Actually, the live event functionality is pretty darn robust on the backend. There are all sorts of flags that we can turn on and off, including team preview. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of it. Not saying it will definitely be used, but I do have the option.

Mr. Liesik, you guys have done a great job in the past 2 years that I've been a participant in the VGC. It's always tons of fun. As a competitive player though, I can't help but point out that it makes a huuuuuuuuuge difference whether or not we can see our opponent's mons before the battle.

For example, when we first heard about the Japanese rules, for some reason we all assumed we'd have team preview. A metagame began to develop among those of us who are already preparing that centered around looking at your opponent's team, and stacking your team against theirs. People knew the common threats, and invented interesting and unique counters against them. Surprisingly to me, solid and proven teams that worked wonders in '09 and '10 fell flat on their face in this new metagame because if your opponent had half a brain, they could read your most likely leads, and stack their team specifically to counter them. In it's own way it is fun, but it's just very different to what most of us are used to.

However, just a few weeks back, a certain user realized that on local play, team preview wasn't required like it is (or seems to be) on wifi. As a whole, we all started playing without team preview. The. Whole. Metagame. Completely. Collapsed. The new teams that were doing phenomenally well started failing hard, and the old, solid, proven teams started winning just like they used to.

In light of this this inadvertent experiment, I've come to the conclusion that whether or not we use team preview in VGC '11 will make an enormous difference on what kind of teams those of us that are preparing now will end up having to use. I know you and your crew have everything in the works, and I trust you all have it under control, but please, please don't keep us in the dark about this important aspect of VGC '11.

Thanks.

Great, all you need now is to open the doors to Canada! :thumb:

Believe me, I've been following your threads.

The thing that I really like about team preview is that it makes bring 6, play 4 actually have some meaning. In best-of-3, B6P4 allows you to modifiy your team to attempt to counter your opponent's strategies between games. Since the bulk of VGC is played single elimination, B6P4 is largely meaningless. Team preview creates a similar opportunity for team modification.

It's not my intent to toy with you. I release information as early as I can, and often, far later than I want.

Oh yeah, and tell Huy I never said Little Cup. I said Fancy Cup.

Just posting to say that I would be completely down with Fancy Cup. Especially with Miracle Shooter on.

Thank you for clearing up the "Live Event" info. And i am sure we all know that you and the rest of the TPCI team work very hard to get us info as quick as possible.

As you have told me in the past, i hope said info comes "Soon™".

Well, I doubt we will get the info before Black/White comes out, no matter how soon Mike wants to get it out.

would it be safe to say although we might use team preview during regionals/nats, we will not be using team preview during worlds, seeing as the japanese are not using it?

I don't like making my players change horses mid-stream. If we use team preview, it will be for the whole series or not at all.

Just for clarification....ARE Canadians allowed to play in the US VG Grinders / Nats? Or was what happened last year just someone getting through the cracks un-noticed?
