Worlds 2008

As a matter of recent fact, coincidentally, where I am, Tasmania was rated by a major American magazine as one of the top 5 island destinations in the world.

Perhaps we could poll a number of destinations and see what tops and how it will rate when and if PUI announce a non-USA location?

Queensland, why???

because of all it's tourist attractions:

Underwater World
Sea World
Wet and Wild
Movie World
Dream World
Australia Zoo
Steve Irwin - well......you can still visit his grave *takes off hat*

guys, ur still not thinking.

If worlds would be outside usa, i'm 99,9% sure that 2008 will be in europe (0,1% is for japan =P).

Many reasons:

1) You can travel inside Europe by plane with less than 100 euro, this means that players from:

Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands (damn, i prefer saying Holland), Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden and UK would have almost none cost.
Using numbers: almost 60% of 2008 worlds players are european.
If the price of the trip inside europe (by plane, by train can be even cheaper) is 100 euro, this means that they will pay 1900 euro with trips for europeans. I may be wrong, but 1900 euro is the price for only 1 person to japan.

2) Traveling to japan may be really exaustive for anyone who lives in europe/america.

3) European market is GROWING

4) In places like Japan, the culture is dramastic different (not worse or better, i personally like and respect them), people could have problems with this "crash"

5) I'm not psychic man, but as usa is facing problems with the muslim world, and we dont know when or if this will ends, one more reason to be outside usa and even UK...

So with all of this i'd say that in 2008 you can prepare yourself to travel to Germany, France or Italy, places that are on middle of everything in europe.

Hmmm,
While Having Worlds Outside The USA is a great idea, I find it kinda of diffucult to believe that PUI/POP would have worlds outside the USA more than 2 Str8 yrs, and even I think that is a bit much.... I can understand why they would, but seeing as most of the player base are either in the USA or Japan, I dont see it making much sense, but I am most likely completely off...

Bohn - traveling in Europe is not as cheap as you think.
Yes there are "pricefighters" offering tickets for 25 upto 99 Euro but they don't notice you about the airport/security taxes you have to pay. Those will be visible when you get the bill. And those taxes are most time more than the costs of the ticket.
Also you have to book very early if you want the cheaper tickets.

But overal the question would be, is Europe ready to host such an event.
Of course the players are ready for any big event, but that's not the problem.
Logistics will be.
As long in Europe Distributors are trying to force the "closing of their markets" they are not ready for this.

Keep in mind the OP structure outside the USA is different.
The assignment of tournaments/leagues are most times not because there is a playersbase.
Heck no it's based on "do we have a costumer (retailer) who will buy product".
As long as the OP program is not separated from the sales business, there will be a huge obstacle to cooperate.
Not for the Professors and TO's, they could easily cooperate and exchange manpower, they are into this for the game. While most LD's are only into it for the money.
Professors/TO's are bounded to the terms of the LD, which is in most cases not good for the grow of the progam.
You have to be more interested into this subject to understand why this setup does not work and will not work in the future.
And that's why I consider Europe not ready for Worlds.

But I keep on hoping it will chance in the future.

Lia,

I'm much more optimistic about the prospects of a worlds in Europe. Primarily because I doubt that POP would leave the running of worlds up to any single or for that matter conglomerate of european distributors. POP doesn't leave worlds to their PTOs or distributors in the USA so why should they do this outside the USA?

I also believe that a European Worlds will feature some kind of LCQ.

When this will happen though I can't guess. Mostly because we have yet to see many non-USA judges used at worlds. While it makes sense for POP to use USA judges for worlds events local to the USA the reliance upon USA based judges will always be a constraint on the mobility and location of worlds.

Does anyone know how many non-USA judges were used at the three POP worlds thus far? I'm hoping that there is a rising trend.

I remain patient and optimistic about the prospects for Worlds in Europe.

In 2006, I beleive each age group had 2 of 7 judges be non USA, and of course, the PCL crew were omnipresent everywhere. I know we had 2 in 10- (Ives and Michael).

Keith

At least two in 15+ too from Belgium (Kristel) and Germany (don't remember his first name)...

I have also hear rumors for the location of Worlds 2008 (somewhere in Europe  ).

strategy PUI have in mind is to locate Worlds 2008 in a non-USA country for the first time.

Thailand
Bulgaria
Greece
Aruba

You can't find any real pokemon cards in Thailand let alone a tournament. Trust me. I'm in thailand at the time of this post and i cant find any cards, let alone tournaments.

And you don't see tournaments in hungary

POP doesn't leave Worlds to their PTO's because untill at least 2007 Worlds is run in their Homecountry. They don't need any distributor inside the USA, but they will need at least 1 in Europe.
There were several PTO's present at Worlds, in staff.
The only PTO's outside the USA are the Distributors or in 1 case (Italy) an independent OP Manager.
Do you really expect any LD or OP Manager having the skills to staff a big event as Worlds. (oke Marcello and Eskill).

POP will need at least some part of the logistics done by somebody knowing Europe better.
Somebody who is aware of IMPORT taxes and laws to start with.
I am not even talking about staff, I would think that's almost the easiest part. If staff is not available here they can be brought in. (oke expensive but possible)
Running the event is something very different from setting up the event.

I don't know exactly how they arranged the EU Professor Cup, but I am pretty sure they must have had a kind of help inside Europe.
If i am wrong, you can forget what I have said about logistics.
If I am right they need somebody inside the "Worldscountry", and my best guess would be a distributor.

I count on Worlds being one year in Europe, I also expect we might see a LCQ when this happens.
I only at this moment cannot see it happening soon. I know things can change fast, but in regards to Pokemon OP, changes take more time.

Judges at Worlds
Eskil from Norway ( has been judge at Worlds as the only outider in 2005 and I think in 2004).
Ives from Mexico (same as Eskil)
Michael from Denmark.
Marcos from Germany.
Kristel from Belgium
Marcello from Italy

So yes there is absolute a raise in using NON USA judges.
To be honest those people were overqualified to only act as translator.
Also the level of translators has gone up.
Instead of some LD employee who doesn't have any interest and knowledge of the game, I saw this year involved people as translators, good move.

I am optimistic and realistic, there is much to be done before Europe is ready.
To start with acting as EUROPE and not everybody protecting it's own "island/market".

Each country in Europe has touristic/historical/familyfun to offer, but one of the issues is language.
I don't know the UK laws and things according Import, but the best option to host a Worlds in Europe would be the UK and after that any country were you can get along with the English language.
