Yveltal XY 78/146's Oblivion wing reads:
Attach a :dark: Energy card from your discard pile to 1 of your benched pokemon.

My question is, are you allowed to select an Special Darkness energy and attach it to your pokemon on the bench?

For other non-modified formats of course. It's kinda confusing since special darkness has been out of the format for quite some time, and I don't know if new cards still take these old cards into account.

Yes, if you are playing in a format where Special Dark Energy cards are allowed, this attack could search for and attach a Special Dark.
