I do all my mats by hand. I'm still trying to improve on them. I neeeeeeed to try using airbrushing, it would look nicer and feel nicer to my hands lol. Here are some of mine, tho they're not exactly as good or detailed as some of you other fine people here:

So do i just buy a white playmat and doodle on in and what not? And is it ok if I have non pokemon characters? I was gonna have Neku and Ameratsu on mine.

You can have what ever you want on it. I like to keep my mats Pokemon themed for Pokemon tournaments.
 
You have a very interesting art style, Poinko... I was going to try and use aribrushing on my mats, but my cat ripped up the hose...

They look good for the most part. Kind of reminds me of the nuzlocke challange comics
 
I've just got a recent artist to do mine, and she is up for taking commissions. She was hoping people would take interest when I had it with me at nationals, but I only really had it out during my main games.

First one, this one is mine:

Mienshao playmat taken with the request of having some relevance to Byakuren Hijiri of Touhou fame. The whole lotus motif and the scroll are correlation to Byakuren.

Second one, this one is her personal playmat and the one I caught note of when I was judging an event in Parkersberg.

The camera quality is crap, and she's mentioned that its difficult to get good pictures in her apartment due to lighting. These look ridiculously sick in person. She's working on a Chandelure one for a friend of mine, and one of my league members is commissioning her for Umbreon.
