Lack of Diversity in Nats & Worlds Cities

I don't think the "wow factor" isn't about big and lavish cities, but about being somewhere new. While I was wowed when I first went to Hawaii I was also just as wowed whenever I get to go to a new place. It's not about how lavish the place is, but what there is to do there and what memories are made. What I remember most from worlds last year (which was my first worlds for reference) wasn't the lavish hotel I was at or the breath taking views, but being able to hang out with all my friends and making new friends while playing a game I love. Those are the memories that will last throughout my life, not the city I was in. Each city has something to offer and that's what makes it a unique place. It's called Worlds, not Hawaii and California. Showcase some other great cities!

London, Madrid, New York City, Chicago, Toronto, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Maui, San Francisco, Paris... the list could go on and on for me.

I'm skeptical of hosting the event in a city where English isn't the primary language. I know this sounds kind of selfish and ethnocentric, but the reality is English is by far the most widely spoken language amongst Pokémon players.

something to consider: is TPCi booking the worlds venue in order to 'wow!' a first-time worlds participant, or to satisfy the desires of a repeat attendee to not be 'bored' by 'another' trip to hawaii?

Indianapolis was a 'wow!' None of the worlds locations to which I've been have been 'wow!'s; we all know what touristy vacation sites are (coughhawaiicough); San Diego was a solid place to hold an event, but really expensive actually. IMO a return to Florida may or may not 'wow!' first-time contestants, but more will get to go in the first place! I haven't been to the Florida venue personally. Ditching Hawaii is a must though. The island was actually hideous (see those giant stretches of gray where nothing had been built?) and the resort, while serving the needs of the general vacationer, required a lot of walking while not reallly offering anything unique. Plus, something on a lot of people's minds is price, and as it turns out, both SD and Hawaii were quite expensive.

Paris, London, Tokyo, New York City, Ottawa, Honolulu...

YESSS. I'm all about visiting new places. I would like Nats to be moved around central U.S. but I could understand why TPCI doesn't want to move it. But Worlds should see some new touristy areas. SD+Hawaii are getting kinda old. If its in Hawaii again though I would love to see it be held in other parts (you can only do so much in Kona)

I would personally love to go to upcoming Worlds; I just don't think I could afford it regardless of where it's at. Doesn't Nationals cover this as well as the invitation system for your online rankings?

did you know there was a time when 15+ year olds lost all their organized play? It was only restored after players joined together and demanded it be returned.
actually, it was only restored when WotC lost the franchise and PUI/TPCi took over organized play...

Honestly, if we're talking about improving the 'wow factor', my first suggestion would be to get Worlds out of the hotels. I think it'd be much more memorable if Worlds was held in a more exciting area, like an arena. I also wish it could be outdoors, with different tents for each of the events. Have a ton of Pokemon inflatables all over the place, with some killer lighting (for the late hours) and I really think it'd leave a stronger memory in the minds of those that make it to Worlds.

Yeah, I know of issues with it being outside, like the wind blowing cards, but you gotta admit it'd be more exciting than the same old boxed-in hotel rooms.

If I recall correctly, there was originally no proposed tournament for 15+ in 2002 in Seattle, but after the uproar from players, they added an unlimited event after the conclusion of the main tournament. After that, I know we were allowed to play in the 2003 Fan Appreciation Tournament, though I suppose it didn't make much of a difference by then since it was the last tournament.

.

Eh I think we're getting a bit too crazy now, haha. As a once 13-year old that has attempted a lot of outside Pokémon, I can tell you it doesn't work too well. Rain? And you thought Gust of Wind was bad? Try a real, actual Gust of Wind.

People say they'd hate it to be in Europe because they'd never be able to go there...
I'm in the UK and I'd never able to go to America without a paid trip. :\

Nats in the UK changes too often imo, but judging on what people say, and what I've seen by videos, it looks like a really good place to hold Nats. Worlds should change more often though, I'm sure a lot of people would love to visit parts of America they've never been to before, even if they live in America.

Bring World's to Austin, since it's so weird =P

Ok for real, I think Florida would work nice

I would say the likes of Chicago and New York, but it is held during the Summer and those aren't quite Summer places to visit

i think some "wow" cities for worlds could be(excluding California, Florida, Hawaii)
Dallas, New Orleans, New York, Indy(to a degree, not "wow" but the fact is that it always has/always will have major gaming events, no reason not to try one year), Chicago, Toronto, Seattle, Vancouver, i also think could be made for San antoino, houston, and oklahoma.

Florida is nice, but we have been there twice (though it wasn't recent: 2004 and 2008). Florida can be a bit humid in the Summer, too.

Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities in the world in the Summer! Believe me, you don't want to be there in the Winter.

Chicago and NYC seem to be on a lot of lists. Everyone chime in! Name some cities you'd like to see Worlds (or Nationals) held at.

I've always thought that a balance between being "fair" to all areas of the country and staying in line with TPCI's view of what Worlds/Nationals is, would be to have a rotation like this...

Year 1:
Worlds - San Diego
Nationals - NY

Year 2:
Worlds - Florida
Nationals - Seattle

Year 3:
Worlds - Hawaii
Nationals - Indianapolis

Probably not perfect (it hurts the midwest, but that's where dreams go to die anyway), but something like this I think could work. Obviously it doesn't help the lack of diversity, but it would at least bring us to places we haven't been before, AND if we remove specific cities, it could just be West Coast/East Coast, with the actual location changing every year.

With my total Mid-western bias, I dislike this rotation extensively. However, Add in one more Midwest city somewhere to even it up to be 2 each, (Chicago?) I'd totally agree with that idea.

The real problem about Hilton hotel is that wi-fi is not free while almost any hotel in America have free Wifi.

Anyway, for Nats they will cut scholarships in order to give more travels, like they did in Germany in 2011 (the 2nd also got a travel) for more countries. This will solve the problem of the lesser venue when Worlds are in Hawaii.
