Too 'Patriotic?'

After thinking about this topic and debating it with others, I've decided to make a post which may cause backlash towards myself, though I risk this as i wish to find out if there were others that felt the same/agree with what im saying.

At worlds, the judging was nothing short of superb. Rulings were close to perfect, if not so, and for this I want to shout out to a few judges that i felt made my experience (as always) incredible. These judges were 'Pop, Vince and BDS. Now, these were the only 3 that i came into direct contact with in my games, and i felt they showed all players a high level of respect if they were shown it themselves. I was polite to all staff, and was therefore treated with a high standard of respect/fairness.

For any judges that I didn't meet one to one, or have forgotten to mention, I am sorry, its rude of me not too commend you all, but to be honest some just do not deserve it. Some were rude, and made pretty silly errors, which may have cost some players dearly. A UK player in the seniors category told me he has filed a complaint because a Judge told him he was not allowed to cut his opponents deck, his opponent proceeds to topdeck the gamewinning card lol. Now whos to say this wasn't because the judge simply did not know the rules, but this players father was adament the decision was made based on the american connection of his opp/judge. So, the main point of my thread is, has pokemon gotten to a point where a judge could be biased based on the country hes from. Can your judge be too 'patriotic?'

An example of this would be, an american judge literally pumping his fist and shouting 'Yes! Atleast one Americans In' when jeremy won. In my opinion, its the players win first, and the countries second.

I just wanted to know what everyone thought, if anyone else felt that they were treated unfairly, i know i wasn't, but after talking to a few players, i thought i'd post and see what kind of response i get.

Thanks for a great worlds everyone, I just wanted to know if it was as fair for you as it was for me.

I believe it was Ross who posted this eariler

When Jason or Jeremy M won Masters the two previous years. The last thing in there mind is US won.

Its an individual game to most players.

i would play the same if i were from germany
when competing, my country is the last thing on my mind

That was fairly stupid. Not only does it raise your point, amphy, it also completely undermines the professionalism of what is supposed to be the elite tournament of the year.

I can imagine it, I've had a judge pump their fist and say "YESSS" after my opponent beat me in a top cut game.

A Long time ago, whenever I face someone who cheats, and I report it the minute it happens, the Judges don't do anything at all.

i know what it means....

it even happens in the same country (a player form a certain city / team often receive a different threatment).

i remember i lost in the top cut of a tournament that will not be named, and i heard one of the judges talking to the kid who beat me say, "oh you beat Zach? YES!" while said judge pumped his/her hand in the air in celebration.

I think patriotism is GREAT for the game and it is one reason I love competing at worlds.
But judges must be unbiased, and not show any sign of otherwise.

The only time this should happen is if the player that lost, was rude to their opponent, was being a jerk to other players in the tourny( telling every one that they are no good, that they should all just go home...). Or somthing like that. Other than that, no.

Oh, Ross.
I would like to apploigze for trying to stall you out in the modified after nats. I don't normaly stall, but after going 4/5 in the main event, and haveing rotten luck in the battles before you, I realy wanted to win one. I would like to play you again if I ever get the chance.

It should never happen.

hiedi gave me a hug after i beaat seena in the grinder
in fact, like 20 people did, including some american judges
it was quite funny

I think it can affect decisions. I've seen rulings favored towars friends or relatives, and special favors allowed that undermine the rest of the players and put some at unfair advantages.

In a States or Cities top cut, although I believe it to be the first, some two or three years ago, I was cheated in the top cut(he drew more cards than allowed. I did not notice until too late due to his unnerving drawing and playing speed. I know who they are, that they still play, and have, may times, played in the same tournsament with him. I have neglected to mention it to him since I realized it was him, and will continue to do so.

Something that has pained me ever since my return to the competitive play of this game--it's become almost cutthroat.(In a mild manner.) Who's out to have fun anymore? Maybe it's just my bad luck, or maybe I'm just taking things too seriously, but the majority of players have been harsh, unfriendly, or condescending towards me the whole time. I have met only a few wam, friendly players of the game.

I think judges need to be less biased than they are, and I KNOW they are, although I'm not going to point any fingers. But judges aren't the only ones to blame, some players have taken things too seriously as well. I've remembered times when I forgot to let my opponent cut my deck....from the look on their face, I could have committed murder.

There are a few problems with this post. First, I dont know what state your from but if judges are making calls on family members that is a BIG :nonono: (no no). WHENEVER I judge I do NOT judge my father's games at all. EVER. period. That is judging taboo. You just dont do it.And if a judge cannot make calls against his/her friends they havef no business judging.

Secondly, you complain about being cheated in top cut and claim you never mentioned it. And you come on a public message board two OR three years later to talk about it? This is as much of a sob story as FS's nats report.

You also claim to know (and possibly be the victim of) biased judges. And yet refuse to do ANYTHING about it.(such as naming names). At least tell PUI so that they may investigate.

My name is Steve Silvestro and I disaprove of your post

EDIT: Wow I see that your in TN. (vince/clay country) Vince has some of the best events to have ever happened and i've been around clay long enough to know that there is nothing going on at his events.
Sorry, but im not buying into this post.

I never said it was Vince or Clay. I HAVE BEEN in other sytaes you know, than this one.

Also, I've never discussed it here really(my little event two or three years ago), but with others I have.

Also, I dont think the bias is enough to actually get rid of judges.

A person, no matter what, is going to be naturally biased in one way or another. Thats an uncontrollable factor when you have judges that know the players. But it would not hurt if they made conscious efforts.

Please, to Clsay and Vince if you read this, do not think I am poitning fingers ta you, you're both great. You are not the examples I list here at all. (Although I do think you too would be affected by a natural leaning towards players you know personally or respect, as anyone else would)

Don't presume to think I'm just talking for the sake of things, it hurts my feeling to be truthful. I, personally don't see myself continuing gameplay much longer than this next season, but I still want to focus efforts on making this game more friendly and enjoyable. I apologize to any whom my thoughts offended.

edit:Ha! I tried to think...and now I can't even remember the names of the judges! I knew them too briefly....not long enough to remember names....Not to mention the year its been.
