Okay, so it's that time again and I'm looking to buy a computer. I haven't checked the field in probably a year. But I did today and MAN have computers gotten expensive. The new standard seems to be $1500+ for any decent computer.

I thought technology was supposed to go down in value over time?

What has changed and made prices skyrocket?

Computers are expensive because they need bubble wrap and those plastic things that hold the wire. The PC itself is only like $5

Go to Fry's or Microcenter (or equivalent large-scale electronics retailer in your area) over a few weekends and you should be able to find a passable, albeit not bleeding edge laptop for around $600. Or like Jason suggested, do the same and shop around for a case, motherboard & cpu, RAM, hard drive: this can be about $250-300. I recommend newegg.com, ebay, or pricewatch.com for the best deals on components.

yeah, you can find good deals online.

but if you want the product right now. i bet theres some good pcs that you can get in compusa, for about 500 bucks after rebates. oooh wait for the thanksgiving sale, and you'll see lots of good deals. best deals you'll see all year.

theres not really any major stuff going on in terms of super fast processors and bigger hard drive memories for the every day consumer. the prices are they way they are probably because they can get away with it.

right now, i'm really wanting an ipod touch. but i'm thinking of why i dont need it. so i can save some money,

actually i think computers have gotten cheaper. look in sunday's flyer for best buy or circuit city. youll see desktops for around $300. they never really get cheaper than $300 as time goes on, you just get more for your money.

I personally think that prices of computers have come down alot.....the one I bought 5yrs ago was $1800....now I can get one with alot more speed more ram more HD space, etc for alot less....you can buy one for $500 desktop....I just bought a laptop from Dell in Aug for $620....decent configuration....check out the Vostro line at Dell....depends what you are looking for but you can definitely get alot more computer for your money...you can PM if you want some deal sites to check out the prices....good luck Prime

I got a Tablet PC, pretty decent hardware to go with it, for under $1000 last year. Yes, it will take a little while to get the exact specs that you want for less than $1000. However, you can find it. It's not too incredibly difficult.

.
My Palm Pilot has twice the computing power of my first PC -- for a fraction of the price.

Besides checking the Sunday ads (Fry's, OfficeMax, etc), you might want to search online for various "coupon codes" and rebates. There are a lot of sites like these ones:

In the past, I've had good luck comparison shopping -- with reviews -- at sites like PriceGrabber (http://www.pricegrabber.com/) and CNet (http://shopper.cnet.com/). If you have the time to browse, another fun way to shop is the auction site, uBid (http://www.ubid.com/).

I went on eBay one day in July and bought a $50 iMac G3. It is really low in specs, but It is so fast for its age and low numbers. It is simply amazing. It is what I use to post on the Gym all day. You can get a decent eMac on eBay for a few hundred, they are very nice computers. But new Macs are a ton of $$$$! I'd just buy a used computer to save $$$$

Computers drop in price SO fast, its not even worth investing in a new one IMO, unless your super serious about your machine.

Computers used to be around $2000 when I got my first one back in 98 or 99. I personally think they've only grown cheaper.

computers are expensive for the same reason oil is expensive
because they can charge that much, and people cant do anything about it

From the looks of it you just looked at the wrong place at the wrong time. From the advertisements I've seen computers when on sale seldom exceed 1000$. Just wait till theres a sale for a holiday or something.

Where have you been looking? I almost never see a desktop over 1000 dollars in stores anymore. My first laptop, i waited until Thanksgiving to get it, and I paid 600 for it, and it was good and fast. Until my dog vomited on it and fried the motherboard. XD I ended up upgrading to a Macbook, and that was expensive. 1300 for it, but that's a laptop. Most desktops aren't even that much.

Around here, a good, decent computer will only run $1000, maybe a bit more at the most. I just got a new laptop recently (not a PC, but still) for only $649 at Best Buy with 1 GB of Memory, a 160 GB hard drive, Nvidia 6100 something graphics card, and Vista of course. So yeah, to me that was a good deal and more than fits my needs. So I guess it depends on what you mean by decent.

O-KAY...

I went to cnet.com, a site that reviews all technology and the PC's they recommended were all over $1000. Anyways...

I looked at the Dell Website and the computer I needed (for academic purposes) would cost me around $850. That might be do-able, but I'm still looking for alternatives.

I do plan to hold onto my money until Black Friday and see if I can get a sweet deal then.

For those that posted spam in this thread...GED-OUTA-HERE!

try getting another one during the holiday seasons
or get the parts and make it yourself (seriously, you save so much money)
