**** IMPORTANT TOP CUT INFORMATION - September 9th, 2009 ****

It looks like we have one of those rare gym contests that will actually result in a definitive Winner. We have completed the Swiss competition leaving 8 deck builders standing. Sometime in the next 4 to 6 weeks we will find out who is the best of the best. There were a number of very good decks that were eliminated by donks, luck of the draw or unfavorable match-ups. However, every deck, especially the 3-0 winners, has earned their place at the top table.

Record 3-0

Sandslash7/Budget T-Tar
Ragingphantom with Budget Infernape
CharizardBoy with SP's (Turtwig GL/Aerodactyl GL/Weavile)
Cyrus with Honchkrow

Record 2-1

pandamom with Leafeon/Vespiquen
Burmy with Slowdrill
Waynegg with Octillery + friends
Afstandopleren with Beautifly

Format - Top-Cut Format will be best of three, single elimination match play.

Pairing – Round one pairing will match each of the 3-0 winners against a randomly selected 2-1 from another pod. The pairing will not be revealed until all 8 final deck list have been submitted or the deck submission date (which ever comes first).

Deck Lists – The deck lists must conform to the original deck building and pricing rules. If a players fails to submit a deck list, their original deck list will be used. Therefore we are guaranteed to have a complete set of deck lists. The deadline for submissions is Thursday September 17th Midnight (EST).

Players – The players for the top cut must have valid Pokegym account and must commit to writing a match report after the top cut. The players will get their contestants deck lists on Saturday September 19th and have at least 1 week to review and test the deck they are playing. We have to work around BR schedules in our area, so I can’t set a tournament date at this time. The earliest possible date will be Saturday September 26th a week after the players get their lists.

Again I congratulate all of the contestants on their submissions and our winners in particular. I hope that league leaders and players with limited resources will benefit from the efforts of our participants and players.

Next Contest

There was overwhelming interest in this contest. We filled all 32 available spots in 3 days! If you were unfortunate and missed making a submission for this contest, fear not we do plan to do this again (pending gym approval of course). If you want to make sure you don’t miss your next opportunity PM me now with “I Want In” in your PM subject. I will compile a “PMing” list for the next contest announcement. (If you participated in this contest you’re already on the list). Remember that no one is in until your list is submitted and reviewed. Do not send me a list until the next contest is announced.

If you are a League Leader interested in hosting a pod, PM me with “I’ll host” in the PM subject. The number of hosts will have a direct bearing on the number contestants we can handle. If your league leader happens to miss this post let them know about it. If we can get our act together we may shoot for the BR to City’s lull. If not then we will try for the City’s to State’s lull. The very nature of IRL play requires an enormous amount of coordination and results in a rather long contest. I appreciate everyone’s patience and continued interest.

***** Original OP - 7/29/2009 *****

Over the last few weeks the masters at our league have developed a deck building challenge. The concept is very simple but deceptively challenging. Build the best deck you can for less then $25 retail. We have come up with some very playable decks and now use them almost exclusively when playing juniors and new players at our league. Standard rules for constructed modified decks apply. You may choose cards from DP through RR. (For the purpose of the contest SV is excluded), but you can not exceed the $25 limit. Guess we won’t see many Roseanne at $5 a pop.

Pricing: To be consistent we have prepared a price list that all contestants must use when assessing the value of their deck.

Basic Energy Free
Special Energy 1.00
Commons .25
Uncommon .50
Rare 1.00
Secret Rares and Shiny are excluded
Strictly for my convenience Promos are excluded stick to the main sets please.
Exceptions - See bottom of this post for exceptions to this basic guideline as well as prices for all trainers.

RULE 1: Don’t question the price list.
RULE 2: See Rule 1
The price list is not intended to be a pricing guide. It is intended to provide a fair and consistent basis for the contest and for the contest only. We have done a lot of work preparing the list and we did consult several sites that sell singles as part of that research but we did not use those prices blindly. If something is undervalued and you can find it, exploit it. Conversely, if something isn’t worth the price listed, don’t use it. No contestant has an advantage over any other contestant because everyone is working from the same list. Oh, by the way, did I mention DON'T QUESTION THE PRICE LIST.

Participation: There are a limited number of spots so submit your deck early! There will be 32 contestants, 4 pods of 8 contestants each. Top 2 contestants from each pod advance to the finals. Finalists have the option of modifying or submitting completely new decks for the final round. If they don’t their original list will be played in the final round. The 1st 32 players to submit valid lists are entered in the contest. When all 32 spots are filled let the games begin. Make your submission by sending a PM with a deck list to WinkWinkNudgeNudge the contest organizer. Please include set, number and prices to help speed the deck check process. Add a post to this thread when you make your submission. As deck lists are validated your name and deck value will be posted on Post #3. If you submit an invalid desk list you will be notified by me. You will have 24 hours to correct and return your list without being moved to the end of the queue. When edits are made to the opening posts a new post will also be made to the thread to trigger e-mail alerts to thread subscribers.

Judging: These deck building contests are usually very subjective. Therefore, I’m suggesting something different. We plan to judge your submissions the only place a deck can be judged, at the tables! Once folks get back from Worlds we will have enough players in our area to run 8 player three game mini tournaments. Sure one “contestant” may get a better “player” than another but there is always an element of luck in Pokemon. Dems da brakes. The best thing the contestant can do is to provide their player with a good general strategy as well as specific strategies for the anticipated meta-game. This information as well as the deck list will be provided to your “Player” as soon as possible. Players are encouraged but not required to post a brief tournament report and post it on this thread. To clarify the contestants provide the lists we will provide the players. The tournaments will be standard 3 round swiss, 40 minute games. With the following modifications. Should a tournament end in a tie after applying Opponent's win % and Opponent's Opponent's win % an addition tie breaker deck cost has been added. Also no game lose penalties will be levied. If a game state becomes hopelessly confused and can not be rewound. The game will be replayed instead.

Prizes: There will be prizes for the top 4 contestants. The First Place prize includes a $25 gift certificate to the winner’s choice of on-line single sellers provided by me. Other prizes may include deck boxes, booster packs and other stuff donated by P_A.
Entry is free.

GOOD LUCK!

Ok, so getting this straight - the contestants are using ...... for price comparisons. So that means that if the card is sold for $3 there, regardless of whether the card is worth $2 or $5 elsewhere, you're stuck with the $3 price, correct?

So the object is to build a good deck with cards worth less than $25 in total (according to the .....).

Ok, I'll run this by the rest of the mod community - since personally I like the idea, it does sound very challenging. I'll temporarily approve this until notification by the rest of the mods. I'll also be willing to give some prize support. In fact I'll pledge some deckboxes, and some boosters (depending upon how many I have available after my prereleases) and some other assorted stuff down to 4th place. I'll also put this in a new thread and give provisional approval.

60 card modified format decks, yes? When the decks are played against each other, are they going to be 40 minute best out of one matches, or more like top cut 60 minute best out of three rounds? Or since its a league, can we assume no time limit?

So basically no LV.X pokemon can be used... And must be as cost efficient yet effective as possible... Hm, is it more worthwhile to run 4 Roseannes or run more of cheaper cards (like 9 total of Great Ball, Pokeball, Duskball, etc.)... Ah, the possibilities.

Sounds FUN. Sign me up, please~

NOBODY IS IN until I have your validated deck list.

Don't post that you're in on this thread until you PM me your list.

Contestants –that’s you, the people submitting their lists.
Players - These are players in my area who will volunteer to run your decks. No player will see any of the other contestants’ deck lists.

Updates
OP - Updated for clarification and added price list the original OP which was intended for the Mods to consider approving the contest. It has been rewritten.
Post # 3 - Updated to indicate to add afstandopleren

If your questions have not been adequately answered in the OP, please post them again.

I want to thank WWNN for coming up with this great idea. Building cheap decks is a ton of fun.

At first, I said it was impossible to build a decent deck for 25 bucks. I was wrong. It's quite possible and my cheap decks run surprisingly well. It's a great chance to use all those cards that you like, but aren't quite good enough to fit into a tournament deck. There's a lot of synergy to be found amongst the binder clutter. Even cards that are basically considered useless can turn out to be really helpful.

It's also made working on my non-cheap decks seem a lot easier. It's kind of funny to consider making a change and to start thinking "Well, I think the Felicity's would work better than the Cynthia's (grabs the price guide) but it's 50 cents more so what can I take out to make it even...wait a minute! It doesn't matter!"

I'm also looking forward to being able to give some better advice to younger players and people with limited funds. It's kind of frustrating to be reviewing some kid's deck and thinking "you really need a few Roseanne's in there" because you can't exactly tell him or her to go out and drop 20 bucks on 4 cards, especially if they're not looking to play in tournaments. Now I know how to build a deck that doesn't need Roseanne's. It may not be as efficient or powerful, but it will work.

Oh yeah, and I should warn you all--Cheap deck building can become a bit of an obsession. I have 2 working cheap decks, 3 ideas in the works, 1 working deck that I tore down because it was just plain boring, and 1 that I had to can because I made it before the price guide was set and there's no real way to make it cheap. But it has inspired my next "real" deck. (If I ever get around to building it.)

I need more sleeves.
