techs into S2 decks pretty well. who doesn't like free damage counters on the enemy attacker? Queen is the defensive approach, but the King def fits into decks that are constantly hit but never KOd such as flygon and kingdra.

8.5/10 for teching the current meta

SO GOOD IN MONARCHY UGH CHRIS FOUCHET WHY DID YOU FAIL ME!?!?!?!!?!??!!?!?!?

but seriously, it was amazing last year. don't know about now since the metagame is really kinda different

Today's CotD is Nidoking from RR, a fun card from the RR set. Statwise, 130 HP is the average for Stage 2s these days, +30 Weakness to :water: is not that hot (one of the worse ones to have), -20 Resistance to :lightning is better than nothing, and :colorless:colorless to Retreat is modest for a Stage 2. Territoriality is a fun Poke-Body, letting you put 2 damage counters on the defending Pokemon whenever your active Pokemon is damaged by an opponent's attack (even if it KOs them). Really, can't go wrong with a free 2 damage likely every turn (shame this doesn't stack)...Fling Away is ok for :colorless:colorless:colorless dealing a solid 60 unless your opponent has benched Pokemon; then you deal 30 instead and 30 to one of their benched. Sort of a tossup, the secondary effect could hurt more than help at times. Mega Horn deals a great 100 for :fighting::colorless:colorless:colorless, but it's sadly flippy; if you get 2 tails on your 2 coin flips, you deal nothing at all.

Modified - 7/10 (Fun card, but really no decks to take advantage of its great Poke-Body, making this more of a tech instead of a main card)
Limited - 8/10 (If you can get this out, you have a big bruiser that can lay on heavy passive damage regardless if he's active or not)
Unlimited - 1/10 (Not much use here)

I LOVE this card.
currently thinking of running
2-1-2 with nindoqueen's and cress lv.X as a tech.

so yeah, great card.
2counters per hit is painful. +2

fling away 60 while hitting one benched poke for 30 yes please! +2

gigahorn costs a lot, and is flippy, however it has a better chance of hitting 75% (correct me if im wrong there) +2

great resistance, since luxray is currently ruling the meta +1

:colorless:colorless is quite cheap to retreat a nindoking, normaly its like :colorless:colorless:colorless:colorless +1

130HP is not bad for a S2 +1

8/10

I wonder what they had in mind when creating this card, Queen has awesome attacks but Kings attacks are worse as it gets :/

fling away 60 while hitting one benched poke for 30 yes please! +2

If that was true, I would give Nidoking +2 marks as well.

The attacks are horrible, even with Nidoqueen MT reducing the cost.

The PokeBody isn't as good as it looks at first, so it fails even as a tech. Dusknoir DP, Nidoqueen RR and Exploud SV are all better 1-0-1 techs than this.

3/10

It's all right the pokebody is the thing that makes you want to play it that is the only solid reason. Could be nice in a fun deck. 6/10

Alright... lets break the card down piece by piece....

HP: 130 is a bit higher for a stage 2... really good here...

Weakness: Water +30 isnt too bad right now, because not alot of water is being played right now, but that can change

Resistance: LLightning -20 is actually really good irhgt now seeing as Luxray are running about... also Any Resistance is better than no Resistance

Retreat: 2 is about average nowadays... it could be worse, maybe 3 or 4 even....

Poke-Body:Reminds me of Strikes Back, but puts 2 damage counters instead of 1... i also like that it works while Nidoking is on the bench, so all in all good Poke-Body

Attack !: Youll mostly want to use this attack to hit the bench as well for 30 with the main for 30.... seems a bit overcosted to me, but there are ways to take care of that

Attack 2: 1 Fighting and 3 Colorless for a 75% chance to do 100 damage... seems alright to me... i dont like the flips, but it isnt a bad attack, it could be worse

Ratings:
Modified: 6/10 its your main attacker in Monarchy, and thats about the only place i cna put him in right now...
Unlimited: 2/10 this card will be eaten alive in this format....
Limited/Sealed: 10/10 the card WILL win you games... it did for me, his sturdy Poke-Body, and first attack will eat your opponents bench for luncha nd ask for seconds...

130 hp okay for a stage 2, 2 retreat cost is alright, water weakness is doable

territoiality- if your active is attacked put 2 damage counters on the defending. Pretty good, but not enough to warrant a stage 2 tech. But it would be a decent tech for the sw and mt nidoking and nidoqueens, or a deck that needs damage counters on the defending.

fling away- for 3 colorless do 60 damage, or if you are facing a bench you do 30 to the active and 30 to the bench. Unless you are doing a spread strategy this is hard to reccomend. But could be good with metagross and another sniper.

Giga horn- for 4 energies do 100 damage if you dont flip any tails out of 2 coins. 100 damage is good, 4 energies is too expensive, espically because the damage isnt for sure.

Well a good pokemon, it certainly is playable. You can have a nidoking RR deck, or a nidoking sw and mt deck. But there are better pokemon. Hes just a little too slow.
5.5/10

Terrible attacks, but I really like the Poke-Body as a tech. I've never really tried it, so it might be a total failure. 7/10.

This has to be my favorite Nidoking card out there to date. Territoriality is the main reason why I love this card so much. If your opponent does damage they take some recoil damage. So 2 damage counters can be quite helpful, just as helpful like a Plus Power.

As for the attacks, Fling away is nice for spreaeding damage since players hardly ever have just one pokemon in play. 30 to a bench and 30 to the active is decent for 3 colorless energies. Giga Horn is ok. Just flip at least 1 out of 2 possible heads and you land 100 damage. It's nicer when you have MT Nidoqueen in play to take off a Colorless energy cost and make it easier to gain access to, but only in a Monarchy deck.

This is a real good card.....it would be good aginst like flygon...not saying it hase any specialties aginst it but its a powerfull card and it cant get hurt from flygon x's extreme attack

Nidoking (RR) is one of the techs that Rising Rivals came up with but Nidoqueen (RR) is miles ahead of it in terms of being a playable tech. And there are several reasons why.

But first off, the basics of the card. HP of 130 is great for Stage 2's, weakness to water is bad due to Palkia G, Kingdra, and Gyarados around, resistance is great against Luxray GL, and 2 retreat cost is quite unexpected for something as big as Nidoking but is very much appreciated.

Territoriality is somewhat an offensive Poke-Body compared to the defensive Maternal Comfort. Racking up 2 extra damage counters per turn is nice and can easily add up. It can be made better use of by having an active Pokemon that can take several hits, for more passive damage. Effects do get around the body but not many place damage counters anymore when attacking due to the prevalence of Unown G (except for Gengar SF).

Fling Away si somewhat overcosted for a Stage 2, doing a total of 60 damage (direct or with snipe). However, if you accumulated enough counters with Territoriality, the snipe can be of help. Sadly, Kingdra LA can do the same total damage with only 1 Energy and a discard.

Giant Horn is a flippy attack to do 100 damage for 4 (at least only 3 colorless energy are required). Although there's a relatively low chance that the attack fails (about 25%), it's still annoying when you get both tails during crucial moments, especially for what seems to be Nidoking's main attack. Theoretically , Shiftry RR destroys the attack's usefulness, but Shiftry is not really played. Four energies is a bit steep but there are ways to reduce energy requirements, either using Nidoqueen MT or the using the less reliable Upper Energy.

Even if the Poke-Body is great, its attacks are somewhat lackluster- the reason why Nidoqueen is better. Mega Punch and Ruthless Tail are more reliable attacks and Nidoqueen can become quite an attacker in a pinch. Because of this, Nidoking is relegated to the tech status and nothing more (except for the Monarchy deck). It is a nice tech but others clearly outshine it as one (Nidoqueen, Dusknoir, Exploud, to name a few). It seems that it can fit in a lot of decks but most do not have space for it, it does not really gel well with particular strategies, nor it can help with particular match-ups the way other techs do. It has a lot of potential but pretty much regarded as a less useful option.

Modified- 6/10 (nice Poke-Body but the attacks could have been better. Other techs are better)
Limited- 9/10 (Territoriality is a killer here if you manage to get the full line out)

To correct everyone on his 2nd attack, it's a 66.6% chance of hitting. 3 outcomes, not 4.

All in all a good card. Could be better. It's main focus is its Poke-Body. That can be shut off though. There are plenty of ways to run this card properly. It just proves that you don't need to be extremely lucky to hit hard with it.

No, I don't think that's right... While there are 3 end outcomes, the chance of getting exactly 1 heads is more probable than getting either 0 or 2 heads.

Tails, Tails - 0 Heads
Tails, Heads - 1 Heads
Heads, Tails - 1 Heads
Heads, Heads - 2 Heads

So the probability of attacking successfully is 75% (3 out of 4 outcomes).
