A playable Venasaur? Awesome.

I know I'd love to play around with this guy at the casual tables alongside some Broken Time-Spaces! :)

Nidoqueen-d's Poke-Power Invitation from Dragon Frontiers allows you to search your deck for any Pokemon. Oh, wait a minute... Venusaur? Hum...

There are so many trainers in format right now (the numerous Balls and Communication) that search for Pokemon that building a Stage 2 to do the same thing seems redundant. Add to that its 4 retreat cost, the opponent may just use Catcher and let it sit there. What are you going to do, attack with it? For an attack, Base Set Venusaur did a straight 60 for :grass::grass::grass::grass: so Poison Powder here is not much better, especially considering that special conditions don't shut off Abilities.

Nidoqueen saw a moderate amount of play in an environment with more Supporter-heavy search. After rotation, unless trainer lock can get a foot in the door, there's no reason to use Venusaur.

Noteworthy is that this is the first Venusaur to have :water: resistance.

For all the trouble of getting out a stage 2 you are left with a 4 retreat monster that has a pretty meh attack...or are you?

I can actually see this comboing as a late game tech in some DARK decks using Darkrai EX. Odds are, the decks that are going to one shot Darkrai and the darks are not going to one-shot Venusaur. But, yes, you are wasting a bench space for Zorark (Dark Explorers), but you are adding to your ability to get out Hydreggion and other big hitters from the dark side....

Yep, that one dark energy on Venu makes it a free retreater, which seems a LOT better with its ability, and the fact that nothing, except the fire decks which are a bit out of favor, can one shot it.

Just a thought.....

Not sure if it will work....

My rating will reflect it...

Modified - 5/10 The ability is very good, and SOMEONE will figure it out...Pooka, I am looking at you, you know you really love the Grass Beasties!!!

Unlimited 1/10 Pidgeot is better in every way.

Thanks,

Vince

It's ok
HP: 9/10
Attack: 3/10
Artwork: 7/10
Weakness: 6/10
Resistance: 3/10
Retreat: 7/10 due to Heavy Ball
Overall: 6/10

The main reason I see for using this card, besides one just wanting to use it for non-gameplay related reasons like being a Venusaur fan, would be using it under Item lock. So that means using it with something that needs that much search power and has no alternatives.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if some crazy Pokemon LEGEND deck could make use of this.

Bit of catching up, here we have Venusaur from DE, which would normally be a decent Stage 2...if it weren't in this format >.>

Statwise 140 HP is great for a Stage 2, x2 Weakness to :fire: is meh, -20 Resistance to :water: can help (I guess), and :colorless::colorless::colorless::colorless: to Retreat is super expensive. The main reason for running Venusaur would be for access to his nice Ability, Floral Scent, which allows you to grab any Pokemon you like from your deck to add to your hand. Poison Powder is kinda weak at :grass::grass::colorless::colorless: for a mere 70 and Poison, but Venusaur is meant to be a bench sitter with the impressive supporting Ability. Alas though, he exists in the current format, where Catcher + huge damage from broken things like Zekrom EX pretty much topple him over without missing a beat.

Modified - 2/10 - Normally it'd be great...in about any other format. Here, he gets 1-shotted by the ever-popular Zekrom EX and the other :fire: decks still hanging around, and even if he wasn't he's a major sitting duck for Catcher to bring out, and he's quite vulnerable with that nasty 4 Energy Retreat Cost.

Limited - 7/10 - The main con against him is actually getting him out, but once you do you have access to any Pokemon in your deck, a big body, and ok attack to work with

Unlimited - 1/10 - No use here, too slow, better ways to search out Pokemon, and his attack isn't good
