So after having a decent Battle Roads (24-9 / 1 win) and a better Cities (46-15) and ending up 10th in NA with a rating of 1777.05/06 as it keeps fluctuation, I am hoping that I can keep it up. I am unsure what I am going to play for States. About 4 weeks or so before States my friend Matt (Snowball) comes up with Dialga/Palkia and he builds it. I tweak it a bit to make it better. We are torn between a few trainers (Cynthia vs. Oak’s Visit). I go with Oak’s because I like it more than Cynthia’s. So anyway, it is Friday afternoon/night and I have that “feeling” that my deck just isn’t where I want to be. I talk to Kettler (Thursday), My friend Luke, Jay H., and the one who really confirmed the cards I wanted into the deck, Andrea Ceolin who won a States overseas. He confirmed my thoughts before I could tell him. I there for make the changes and after doing so I get about 2-3 games against my friend Matt before I decide to head to sleep feeling much better and much more confident about the deck abilities.

On Saturday I get up go the event (NJ States) and led a few cards out to people. Finally the tournament starts.

R1 - ???????? – Torterra

I get up Palkia start spreading and locking him so he can’t use powers. I get up Dialga G Lv. X and he just doesn’t have an answer as I 5-0 him as he benches.

Win (1-0)

R2 – Daniel L. – Gigas

I get the power lock in first and just proceed to walk all over his deck as without powers it really has issues. I 6-0 him.

Win (2-0)

R3 – Money Smith – Tyranitar

Money has gotten much better in the few tournaments I have seen him at and is always a pleasure to play against due to his positive attitude most of the time. He unfortunately has issues as my power lock stops him from doing anything and Palkia and Dialga are just too much for him and I end up 6-0 him.

Win (3-0)

R4 – Brian G. (Raichu/Manectric)

I am not going to lie, I was not too happy to play this as I thought it was a bad match-up as my Palkia is weak and his Pokemon are resistant to Dialga. However after we start I realize it is scarily enough in my favor. I get a good start and I use my power lock to slow him down. I do some nice moves with Dialga, Palkia Lv. X, and Crobat G to take a big enough lead that he can win. I end up winning 6-4.

Win (4-0)

R5 – Frankie Diaz (Gigas)

I end up getting the power lock in and this prevents him from doing pretty much anything. He ends up taking one prize, but I bench him after taking 3 or 4 prizes or my own.

Win (5-0)

R6 – Greg S. (Dusknoir)

I get my power lock in T2 and he wasn’t able to draw into what he needs and then as it seems that he can’t come back as he really doesn’t have what he needs he scoops.

Win (6-0)

I am the #1 seed going into top cut. I get to play Brian again, which I didn’t think I had a good match-up but after the match I realize it is better for me to play against it than I think. We only have 45 minute best 2 out of 3 rounds but it doesn’t seem to matter.

T8 – Brian G. (Raichu/Manectric)

G1 -We both get awful starts, and unfortunate for him I am able to recover quicker and get the lock in and start taking prizes. I build up a huge lead and he can only take 2-3 prizes before I can knock out his last Pokemon with Palkia Lv. X’s attack.

G2 – We only have 11 minutes for G2. I get a decent start that turns into an awesome start. It seems obvious to him that I am going to take this one as well and he proceeds to scoop right before time is called.

Win (7-0/8-0)

T4 – Zackary A. (Rampardos)

I wasn’t sure how good or bad my match-up was against this. I thought I was heavily favored but I wasn’t sure.

G1 – I get a pretty bad start, but because he knocked out my active Mesprit (Power Lock), He got 40 on him. I proceed to Crobat G him twice then second strike for the KO. From their he couldn’t come back and proceeds to scoop.

G2 – This is pretty much a repeat of G1 but it lasts much longer. I don’t remember what I start with but it wasn’t Mesprit. When he finally realizes he can’t win he scoops.

Win (8-0/10-0)

T2 – Frankie Diaz (Gigas)

G1 - I get the lock in a get a great start. He just can’t do anything and I proceed to just run right through him.

G2 – I go 1st and use Mesprit to lock him. However I made a mistake by not playing down a G Pokemon in my hand. That would of bee okay if I didn’t make another mistake the following turn by shuffling my Uxie back in one turn to early. This seems to be costly for some reason as I just start having issue and proceed to lose steam mid game and just end up getting destroyed.

G3 – I get a crap start. I manage t otake the first prize as he uses Sacrafice. He ends up taking a prize. I need one turn to win as time was called. He warp points, retreats his active Pokemon, uses some cards gets the water he needs for the knock out and the win. If he didn’t have it, I had the game next turn as I would of top deck a Bebe’s for a Uxie for 7 cards that would of allowed me to retreat or Poke Turn and then use Energy Gain for 80 and the KO to one of his bench Pokemon with less than 80 HP. Unfortunately he had it and that means as good as my 8-0 record going into this I end up getting second and I am NOT too happy about having my two worse starts in the last two games of the finals.

Loss (8-1/11-2)

I finish 2nd after being undefeated pretty much the whole tournament. Frankie was the #2 seed so I guess I can live with it. He defends his title of NJ and manages to have some revenge for the loss to me in Swiss. I was a bit disappointed but it happens.

Props –

Kettler, Andrea, Jay H., Matt G, and Luke for helping with the deck.
Giratina Lv. X from my packs
Foil Energy Gain as well.
Going 8-1 and getting 2nd.
Finally making the cut at NJ states as I have failed every year,
My mom for the ride to and from the event.
TWC for a great event.
Frankie for going 8-1 as well and defending his title.
Gaining 60-70 points for my rating.
Staying in the T25 after the first States. :D

Slops –

Frankie for beating me.
Have two straight crap starts in G2 and G3 on finals.
Now winning the event.
Losing 32 points in my final match against Frankie that would of allowed me to gain 100+ points for the event, but instead I gain only about 2/3’s of that.

Thanks for reading,

Drew

GJ Drew, don't be disappointed with 2nd in such a strong field against Frankie, a well-seasoned opponent. Am sure you'll tweak your play and iron out the errors before the major tourneys this season. GL.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. It was more bad luck than the deck had some "errors". The luck and mistakes continued and I lost almost all of the points I gained the week before at DE states. :frown:

Congrats. One question though. Why only 45 min Bo3 SEF? Time issues with the store I presume.
