They substituted the foods because sandwiches are more american and better recognized. I didn't recognize rice balls when I saw the original japanese episode.

I thought that they were pretty strange looking donuts in the dub, though. Of course, the very next year I entered high school and had my first japanese classes, only to learn that it's supposed to be riceballs filled with pickled plums. A little bitter, but I wouldn't mind eating it every once in a while.

Well, obviously there is the translation issues... but the donuts thing is all in all pretty funny. On another early episode, however, it shows Brock making one and refers to it as "riceball," most likely because they had no excuse when you could see him actually making it.
And I mean... when the fact that it is a drawing and not a picture comes into play, in the video I posted, those things could easily pass as those powdered, jelly-filled donuts.

Seems to me like Pokemon's more a twisted version of Japan then anywhere else (for setting). </joking>
The way I see it, if you're going to make silly localization changes like Riceballs->Donuts, fine. Just... Make the food look like donuts. Yes, that'll mean slight animation changes in addition to the basically free dialog switching. It'll make you actually accomplish the goal of localizing though, won't it? After all, its not a very good idea to have a cartoon with audio and visual de-synchronization. ...Heck, it'd probably just be easier to not change the names in that case, but whatever. I'm pretty sure some Animes do it for signs and the like, so its certainly possible.
In any case, it'll be interesting to see how the Chimchar episode that just aired in Japan will be released internationally. Why did the threat of killing Misty (from Meowth of all people. Who takes Team Rocket seriously, anyway?) get edited out? Hm...

If there is, I'd sure like to know where. I'm kinda tired of this dub stuff.

The only subs for Pokemon are fansubs (the subs themselves are probably totally legal; however, the video they usually come with is certainly not legal to distribute) and even those are few and far between.

Ha, I never thought they were eclairs when James said they were way back when. So what if kids don't know what a riceball looks like? Think they know what a soufflé looks like? I don't think 4kids would have edited a foreign food like that out.
On the issue of edits, I totally think they are necessary in certain cases. Take Shin-Chan. From what I understand, none of the jokes would be funny because a lot of them are based on puns which would not have translated over into the English language. I think that the people who dubbed Shin have done a great job at it.
I left anime because of subtitle elitists. Watch a few episodes and suddenly, you are a voice-judging critic of messianic proportions. Without ever taking any acting classes, you just KNOW that the acting in the american-dub is far inferior compared to the japanese. Ugh, you know what it is? You watched the ***-dub first, so you're used to the voices. When you watch the american dub, and hear the different voices, you're like "What's this garbage?"
You just get tired of it man.

Add in the fact that american voice actors have to sync with the anime characters mouths, saying incredibly awkward sounding, out of character lines, and I feel sorry for them sometimes.
What bothers me about sub-elites, they always talk about how poor a translation is, even if it subtitled, as if they were somehow experts at the japanese language. Of course, they've never walked inside a japanese class in their entire lives and somehow are able to formulate some type of "educated criticism" on the quality of the dub based on their scarce knowledge of japanese.

So, how does everyone watch Japanese episodes of ANY anime with subtitles if it's illegal? Or is Pokemon just being stingy?

There has to be. I just want to know what they really said, I can't stand dubs. Makes me kinda mad.
Like that one episode where that girl asked Brock to marry her or something like that, and then Misty comes out of nowhere and says something along the lines of "We'll be married someday" to Ash. That's a dub, and I don't like it. What was really said was something like, "She feel for him (Brock) at first sight."
I never would of knew that if I didn't do some research on Pokeshipping...
