5-2 (19th), whiff for the 3rd time in 7 years in the Prof. Cup

I didn't like the format the whole year, so I decided to sit out for most of the year. Since I lost my 3rd league leading position each for a various of reasons, I need to judge events. So I decided to judge NY and DE States, which was a bit hard since I won last year in NY, and to judge Regionals as I did last year. I always have a blast judging and have to thank the PTOs/TOs who give me the opportunity judge, I really do appreciate it.

So I was planning on playing Fire, but after it won in Europe so single handily I thought that I was right. However after talking to Bullados, he assures me that Psychic is the play and that it pretty much auto wins versus Fire. I'm not sold, but we slowly work on the list getting it to the point where we are satisfied with it. I find it interesting that we added 2 RC to the list just incase, yet I never played RC once. I almost wish that for the event they were extra draw, however it's not a big deal as the deck still performed well.

R1 - Fighting (Donphan/Champ)

He starts by Juniper 3 pokemon away including 2 Donphan. To make a long story short, he could have beat me way quicker, but uses Sandile to lock me in the active spot and win on time. I should have realized what was going on and not played down either Tomb or Mime and left my bench as free retreaters.

Loss (0-1)

I knew I was in trouble and most likely need to win out, but I wasn't going to let myself get down because I started 0-1. I've played enough to know that I can comeback from an 0-1 start.

R2 - Grass (Yanmega/Sunflora/Vileplume)

This wasn't a match. I was able to get 6 Pokemon to the lost zone and win fairly quickly.

Win (1-1)

R3 - Fire

I am able to quickly get stuff into the LZ and win. It was no contest. The deck clearly beats fire, as it hinders it from setting up.

Win (2-1)

R4 and R5 might be reversed, but I'm not sure.

R4 - Water

He gets setup, but I am able to get LW into play and get 6 pokemon into the LZ before he can take 6 prizes.

Win (3-1)

R5 - Fire

See R3, pretty much the same deal.

Win (4-1)

R6 - Craig A. - Water (Samurott)

I feel good about this matchup, especially since his starter was Manaphy. I get a GREAT start. I have 4 Pokemon in the LZ by T3 and we both think I have the game. However I play CC or PONT or something and draw into NOTHING for like 7 turns. By the time I get something, I need sleep flip to have a shot. I don't get the flip I need from Craig (who helped me last year with Garchomp for Worlds) and I end up losing a game due to dead draw that I most likely should have won. I know that this loss is a killer due to my R1 loss, but I figure I'll play the last round and hope to sneak in.

Loss (4-2)

R7 - Fire

I get setup and he ends up drawing pretty dead. I am able to spread damage on pretty much all of his Pokemon. I see he has twins so I don't KO any Pokemon via Cursed Droplets. I finally KO 3 of his Pokemon in one turn to send them all to the LZ, including 2 Vulpix, which leads the next card to be Ninetales. It goes down hill from there for him as I take one more prize before using Hurl to grab the last two and the win.

Win (5-2)

I know it's going to be close, but I tell Ben Sauk, that I think I'll be getting 19th, which ends up being the case. My R1 opponent lost in R7, had he won, I would have snuck in based on the math. Actually if ANY of my opponents had won ONE more game I would have made it in. It's the 3rd time in 7 Prof. Cups that I have managed to go 5-2 and miss. I went 5-2 the first two years and missed cut. I have actually only had 1 Prof. Cup where I didn't go over .500. I was slightly disappointed since I knew I had a really good deck, but didn't have a chance to play it in TC. I had fun and that's all that matters. It was a great event and the dice they gave out was pretty cool.

Thanks for reading,
Drew

Did alot better than me Drew, good job. i played Water and faced 4 other Raindance decks. Who/What ended up winning the Prof Cup?

Was that me R2? I didn't take notes so I can't remember if I faced someone named Drew, sorry. My name's Carlos.
My memory's bad getting older, I actually though I had a chance until you caught my hand in the cookie jar once.....I think it was the turn you really weren't sure whether to Hurl or not and your decision paid off.

As for the winner, I don't recall the name but the deck was Reshiphlosion. I faced him in Top 8, but got a first game loss since I was late getting back from my son's interview. And then game 2 I couldn't get anything going. He said he played a DonChamp build afterwards that my trainer lock would have been good against, and then an "unimpressive" T-tar build, so if I got past him I could have had a chance to win it all. Yeah, made me feel much better. :p Personally I was glad to get the backpack, and the consideration from the judges and my T16 opponent to pause our match so I could run over to the convention center when I needed to.

Shoulda been top 32 :( heheh. But seriously, I got 29th with a tie breaker 8% lower than 16th o_O. Ohhh wells, see ya at worlds Drew lol. As a positive though, you at least did win last year so that's always a bonus :D.
