Awww, you guys are going to put all of us sites with scans out of business. :(

EDIT: Also, if you do not put some sort of watermark on the scans, people will steal them and claim them as their own. I have had several cases on my site where people have taken my scans, even with the watermarks. You guys will have to be careful if you do this.

I don't think they care if people steal their scans. Because once they get up a good amount, it won't matter, everyong will go to them for scans.

MvDV - thanks again for your permission to use the scans. i have been looking for some for the first 3 sets that are of the same quality as yours, but i can't find any that even come close...

thus, at the moment, i am asking for all of to go away for the weekend, and try to find scans of base set, jungle and fossil which are of the quality of MvDV's...

i also want to clarify my current thoughts of the format this database will be in: like Tean Compendium's efforts, i would like to have the catalogue as a static, pdf document. i do not have any database experience past filling in entries of an Access file...

besides, i wanted this to be something of a reference tool. having it downloadable and available offline will be great for people who have no regular internet access (i'm one of these people. i have no internet access at home, only at uni)

as for the scope of the catalogue, LugiasForce, i agree that maybe player combos, deck archtypes and all other information of that sort would be great. however, i myself am a collector, not a player, so i would need some dedicated writers who are up for the task.

as for prices, i have to agree with procastination_alley, i'm afraid. unless someone can actually continuosly check price fluctuations, i don't really see how it is going to work - i have yet to see a realistic price guide, where you can actually buy cards for that price...

(if you still think you will be able to sort out the kinks of it, i'm all for you for including a price guide though  )

d

ps: hope the word document arrives by friday dooskoop  , or i'll not be able to see what i'm working with over the weekend!

Static PDF is cool, but if someone doesn't want to download that large of a file there should be an internet version ready for them.

Also, I would be willing to do the price guide and I could also help with the player information we would like to present.

If you need someone with Adobe Acrobat, I bought it a few months back. $300 is insane LOL.

(P.S. - Check my PM)

This is an amazing project, and really highlights the global community that is PokeGym!

John N. - if you or Richard B. sees this post I wonder if Richard would consider contributing data (if desired) to this effort from his database???

I'd also be glad to assist in any way possible...

LugiasForce; i don't have enough experience by myself to complete a website version with SQL / PHP...

i will hopefully have an initial design i can show people by monday. what i want now is;

1) dooskoop, your word document list please!!!

2) MvDV, if you have english versions of the first three sets, could you scan them in? (if you do this, you will be a legend :) )

if you cannot do this MvDV, or need some help, maybe you should post details as to how exactly you got your scans looking so good (resolution, etc. etc. ) i also notice that your scans are fully rectangular, not the curved shape of usual cards... is this due to cropping the images?

we also need someone who can translate japanese... but i guess at the moment we have more than enough to be getting on with.

i will hopefully have details as to where to send information (to an email address tommorow)

That will have been the case.

I have been scanning at 1200 dpi to highest quality jpeg format, then reduce to 15% size. An example can be seen here.

It provides a fully readable image (although by comparison to those @ pokemon-paradijs my files are twice the size - not a good thing).

I had thought that if I were to begin mass scanning, I'd probably create a template to position the card in the exact same (fully square) position on the scanner bed every time...

Sorry for the delay, I just received my Deoxys set and I've been busy transposing the print run numbers for the common and uncommon variants. I have not quite finished yet, but I've sent you what I have so you'll have something to look at. I'll send a new one as soon as I finish. To everyone else who has requested a copy: I haven't forgotten you, your list will be coming soon.

I can't do it either. I would make a static HTML version. Choose language, choose set, and then choose card. Simple Hyperlinks is all it would take.

dooskoop, thanks for the file, very comprehensive! it will be an integral part of the catalogue as i had it in mind!

LugiasForce, if you look at www.pokemon-paradijs.com , it looks like a simple hyperlink setup, but uses php...

MvDV, if you could tell us exactly what you did to your scans (file quality reduction, cropping, etc.), i could ask other people to scan in their copies. RainbowRichards, your scan is rather good... but i have to have the card out of its sleeve i'm afraid... but your idea of a template seems very sensible.

i wish i had access to a scanner so i can experiment... :(

I don't get what you guys are doing. Are you trying to complete Pokemon Paradise's scans or are you trying to put together a catalog? If it's a catalog and your putting it on a website with card lists, why do that when Pokemon Paradise has card lists and scans?

Sorry I just want to see what you guys are doing. :)

I currently do my scans in the following way (on a HP scanjet 3570c):

Scanning at 300dpi (giving images of appr. 800x1050 pixels). 9 cards on the scanner. Copy/paste the individual cards. Rotate them if necessary. Crop them so they have a small part of the (mainly yellow) border. Resize them to 600x825 (used to be 450x600 for older sets). Save them as jpg image at 15% compression/85% quality. That's all...

Just spoke to rainbowgym and she is willing to borrow me her unlimited collection of base/jungle/fossil, so those scans will be in my collection soon.

BTW: A MySQL database with all the info and proper use of PHP pages will be very flexible for adding future sets as well as searching.

Dogma, also try to get in contact with The Gorn, he is running the pokepedia. There are all the English translations.
I don't think you should go for "own" translations of Japanese cards. Just take the text as written on the English ones. Better is to make a reference to the Japanese card (set and number).

I think that making a complete listing of each Japanese card will keep you busy for weeks/months.
The Gorn (davechri) did put a lot of time into that English database, so don't underestimate what you want to do.
Dooskoop has the best list of cards including misprints etc. as far as I know. (and she also has the cards)

MvdV - I will bring them with me tomorrow (if I don't forget it)

Thanks Rainbowgym.

If you want translations, go to http://www.pokepedia.net and there you will see an "Excel" link. This will download an Excel file (go figure!) that has all the text for every English card.

I'm very curious to see how your project comes out!

Also, you should know that I started the Pokepedia as an exercise to teach myself PHP. Once I got started, I found that it was remarkably easy to learn. You may find that the ability to dynamically build web pages (and pull data from My SQL) is something that will add real value to your site.

TheGorn - your excel file is brilliant! i love your site... the problem is, the emphasis of our sites is rather different... that must have taken a lot of work...

dooskoop - your file was a real eye-opener... most of the variations i didn't really know about, or didn't know how on earth i would find someone who has them! would i be able to count on you for scans for some of the cards?

MvDV and Rainbowgym - if you guys could get me the first 3 set scans as well, you guys would be legends!

keep up the good work guys, i should have a template ready to show you guys what i had in mind for this catalogue...

(btw, if you want this template file, please give me your email address. dooskoop, LugiasForce, MvDV, i'll be sending the files to you guys automatically)!!

happy d :thumb:

ps: i have asked someone to give me a translation of the official japanese site card listing (usagi-chan). hopefully he'll have the time to do other stuff as well!

usagi-chan is signed on to help?! You really DO have all the major players!

Please include me in your distribution list (email in my sig ) for the template. I also have Acrobat available for -> pdf conversions...

usagi-chan is rather busy, so unless things change, he can't do major things... but every little helps!!

and i have adobe acrobat 6 professional  , so i should have the template in pdf format already. i'm planning to use excel to actually create the catalogue in...

i plan to involve one or two other people, but i want to get something tangible to people so everyone can have their say...

this is probably going to be my last post until monday... i have no internet access at home. i'll hopefully have a template by monday. feel free to throw ideas around whilst i'm gone :)

Sorry I just want to see what you guys are doing. :)

We're creating a downloadable PDF catalogue (and eventually we will have a web-based version) that includes scans, text spoilers, collecting information, and playing information for every English and Japanese card available. It's going to be the most comprehensive Pokemon resource on the internet.
