Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

A simple proposal for regionals....

The problem is Gardy. Anyone, regardless of skill and skill of their opponent, wins if they can candy into Gardy T1/T2 and T2/3 Gardy X, and their opponent doesn't have a pretty good setup.

No other card I've ever played against was as bad as that. I've easily beaten t1 metagross d, t1 tyranitar ex and t1 shiftry ex (with a power deck) to name a few, even with less than stellar setups. I need a pretty good setup to beat a t1 Gardy. Sure the chances of them getting a T1 Gardy are pretty low (<10%?), but some of us just run into it repeatedly, and tournaments pretty much come down to if they can rip the Ralts, Candy, Gardy in their opening hand.

I had a deck that beat tech-less Gardy 99/100 times if both decks were set up early enough, meaning the only way I lose was bad setup vs early Gardy, and that happened twice at states. Sure it defies the odds, but that shows that it is possible.

I know the anti-format views are getting a bit old on the PokeGym right now, but please respond with something more than "stop complaining" or "you've got sour grapes" (though I did think the actual picture of sour grapes to be pretty funny). For a lot of people the format isn't a problem because it's pretty easy to jump into the game with a well-built Mortar or GG deck. For those who have been trying to counter those decks, it's been a pretty tough time. I'm not trying to single anyone out with that comment, because I too know what it's like to fail miserably with a rogue deck and then switch to an archetype and be successful. I'm just saying: support change and it might come.

I built a Mortar when I started playing last year and modified it to keep up with and challenge some of the excellent players I go up against, I had fun states because most of the the matches were down to wire with a couple of sudden deaths.

That being said I am going to try something different then the two, maybe I might get a winning record.

Jimmy I see your point. If you ban all the overpowered (dunno what other term to use) cards like Gallade, Gardevoir, Magmortar, Blissey, and Feraligatr maybe it'd require people to think a little more about combinations, even the imperceptible combos like Empoleon/Marowak from last year you made for Nationals or Destiny for States. If that happened that'd be great for the game but I don't think it's going to happen. It'd be very welcome if it did happen though.

Tiny idea here too...

What if there was a compromise, instead of banning Magmortor SW and Gardevior SW, they had their status upgraded to Star. This way, you could still play them, and their respective decks, but they wouldn't be as fast.

Wouldn't kill the decks, but it would DEFINATELY deter people from using just them.

If Blissy or Gatr become issues, its entirely possible to do the same to them.

Jimmy will get his chance to play in a tourney w/o Gardy/Gallade and Mags this year where those cards are banned.....its called the Prof Cup @ Nats!

The point is this: if our format is so bad that one of the game's best and most creative players starts making requests for cards to be banned, there's something wrong.

QFT

Good post Jimmy, I might not agree with banning them, but I definitely agree with the reason behind it.

edit: Q.F.T filter ^ LOL

Sorry, Jimmy, but I am coming back over the top here.

These cards do not need to be banned.

Your answer and Andrew's answer will more than take care of the cards. Poor Gallade and Magmortar, they will not even know what hit them!

What about Florida?

A GREAT Banette build won!

What about Kentucky?

A GREAT Infercatty build won!

There is more stability in the game than in a long time with these two power decks in the mix.

You do not BAN a card every time you get a powerful combo set up.

You work to adapt against that combo.

You want to ban a card to level the playing field? Ban Celios, Rare Candy and Bebes.

It will slow every deck down, and make the envio more even, luck based, and miserable.

If a slow level luck based envio is what you want...ban those 3 cards.

While I agree with NoPoke and Ericnance that opening up the format a bit would be very helpful we have to keep in mind that even in Japan these cards saw lots of play and dominated their FR/LG - TRR on format until new counters got released. The problem for us right now is that we haven’t been given the counters yet. Our DP5 with Garchomp lv X and Eevolutions will help a ton ... and DP6 with probably change things even more. The issue for us is that we are getting staggered updates and getting them “late” by our event schedule. If we had all of Japan’s DP4 cards right now then you wouldn’t see only G&G and Mags dominating. You would have at least two other decks in major contention.

I am SOOO glad they got you locked away in the corner of AUSTRALIA!!!

Jeez:nonono:

JImmy

Fixed- I assure you, it's just that general area up in North-Western Australia :)

I personally haven't seen enough of Magmortar to comment, but Gardevoir needs to be slapped with a big BAN on it's head.

It's stupid- and all too luck dependant.

I was going to start this post with something about sour grapes, but that's already been WAY overplayed in this thread.

No decks are unbeatable, and that includes Magmortar and Gardy. If people want to play those cards, so be it, it's their choice.
There will ALWAYS be a few major archetypes dominating the format. They didn't ban old fashioned Blaze. They didn't ban Rock-Lock. They didn't ban LBS. Magmortar and Gardy are no different.

If you have a problem with the archetypes, make a deck that beats them, and win.
Prove your point with your cards, because in this game, you're not going to get your message through with words.

We're watching :)

The issue with that is, any of us can make a deck that can stifle these 2 particular Archetypes, im sure- but what chance to they have against the decks that fall through the filter of those 2 decks? You'd be cleaned up :)

I don't think that playing in a format with Magmortar and Gardy is very fun either...but I don't think they should be banned. They aren't broken, though Gardy I would qualify as "uber". This is just adversity that the game needs to deal with in order to grow even more. I understand Jimmy's position whole heartedly, but I don't think banning them is a plausible answer.

The banette also only played 1 non-GG deck out of 10 rounds, and it was r1 to a random.
The other banette player in t8 had the exact same situation, only playing one deck that wasn't GG and it was r1 to a random.

=\

There were 4 GGs in the top cut, and 3 of us ran the same list which was absolutely BRUTAL and amazing. Alex still won a game, and if Bianchi had more than like 3 turns with draw/pass, and if I didn't get donked we might have a different champion.

No offense to Ector. He picked a good deck to beat GG, but Banette loses to almost every other deck that was in the top tables. We whooped me and my team's deck really well, but I really wonder if things would be the same had me/bianchi gotten setups, or had Ector played even ONE non-GG deck besides r1 to the random.

Ouch, I think I might run my Mag now, sharpen my skills......

Didn't the guy in Kentucky have his mom scoop to him in the finals?

the fact is simple: GG and magmortar are safe choices, who wants to risk? Only a few people.
What if you are running to ranking points? You play safe choices.
The metagame is BORING.
I developed myself a "new destiny", the playtests were awesome against GG, but may badly loose to magmurder (thx for 100 dmg sniping). But i dont have the guts to play it at states, only becuz of rankings.

IMO, the idea of an extended format, specially for states would be AWESOME.

But lets face it. There wont be BAN of those cards neither extended format. =/

Hello all,

As you all know I am about to go to Michigan states and try to run the new deck I call THE ANSWER. It is a simple deck that I feel could really disturb the metagame. I wanted to get this up PRIOR to getting my butt handed to me by the very decks I built this deck to beat. LOL!

So here goes....

PUI please ban Magmortar and Gardevoir for regionals.

I know I am gonna get flamed by all the people who cant take the time to study all the other GREAT cards this format has to offer and put them to good use. (instead of binder trash). I will also get praise from all the people who love this game for what i was meant to be. FUN AND CHALLENGING for the brain.

Without those 2 particular cards, this format would be so much fun. Games would not be determined by the first one to gardy or mortar. I would get to play against more than 2 decks at any event I TRAVEL MILES TO!!!

Now, Before you all think that I am just trying to make it easier for myself to win at regionals. I just want to let you all know in ADVANCE, I will not be attending one this year. The way the tournaments are set up this year has destroyed my hope of top cutting another one. However, No fear!!! I will be back to play for nationals.

So, I ask again... What would it hurt to temporarily BAN these 2 cards? I can only see an upside.

Jimmy

Jimmy if I know which deck your talking about then, No your deck is so much more annoying then G&G and Magmortar and would totally change how you play your cards.

I developed myself a "new destiny", the playtests were awesome against GG, but may badly loose to magmurder

That's what this format has a lot of:

Banette has a pretty good match-up vs. G/G, but a very bad Magmortar match-up.

Tsunami has a pretty good mach-up vs Magmortar, but very bad vs. G/G.

Grass decks w/ Sceptile give G/G problems, but auto-lose to Magmortar.

The list goes on SDs people have built to have a good match-up versus one, but very bad match-up vs. the other.

So why would anyone risk having a 55-45 maybe even 65-35 against one of these but then have a 35-65 or most likely worse vs. the other?
