Has anyone else here ever heard a song that just shook them to the core in some way? Like you went through something in your life and heard a song that described it perfectly?

For me, its Gone Away by The Offspring, that song just makes me wanna cry every time I hear it....

Not really, and nothing has ever made me want to cry, but there are those songs that are like: wow, that's how I feel right now and it sounds great because of that. But nothing that is so perfect it would be notable.

Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean - Explosions in the Sky

no lyrics. just instrumental music. amazing.

:)

'Gone Away" used to do that to me when I was a lot younger. I remember making a mix cd for my 9th grade english class with that song. We had to have songs that meant a lot to us at the time. Other songs that do that to me:

"All the Arms around you"-Halloween, Alaska
"Black Cloud"-Crazytown (yes, I know. Not an artist you'd think of that way, but this song.....wow.)
"Stickerbrush Symphony"-By far, one of the best Donkey Kong soundtrack songs. ever.

Ahh, now I thought of a song that affects me. For some reason the start up song for the Arcade disk of Gran Turismo 2 really makes me happy (along with the fitting video). Funny thing is I don't even like the game that much... but does anybody else know what I'm talking about?

One -- U2

Not the poppy version. The version with a full orchestra performing the background. I have yet to hear a single song as haunting as Bono's fade-to-black vocal talents being backed by a full string orchestra.

There are just too many, but I will try to list several here that are the most powerful works I have encountered. First I will just say just these two:
I was reading Ken Follett's The Hammer of Eden sometime last year with my Jazz playlist running, and just as I was reading the end, Art Farmer's flugelhorn solo piece "The Day After" was playing, and it was definitely one of those moments where the music fit the story perfectly. I had listened to the tune many times before then, but it was different when I was reading that ending. I felt like I was experiencing the exact emotions the main character was in the end of the novel. It is truly a feeling I will never forget, and one that I will probably never experience again.

One of the greatest composers of modern times, Alfred Reed, wrote an arrangement of the age old song "Green Sleeves." If you know this song, you know the power it can generate. There is nothing else like it in the world. I can't even describe what it feels like. I will sit here and try, but there are no other words. This shaking to the core you speak of, this song delivers that feeling every time you here it. I know for a fact that I want to listen to this song when I die.

These are other notable works. I recommend you listen to any of these songs.
Phil Woods' solo "Chelsea Bridge" from the same album as "The Day After"
Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis playing "Autumn Leaves"
Charles Mingus' very intense tribute to Charlie Parker, "Reincarnation of a Lovebird"
Paul Desmond playing "Here's That Rainy Day"
The Duke Ellington classic "I Let a Song Go Out of my Heart." I am sure there are plenty others he wrote that I haven't heard yet though.
George Gershwin's "Embraceable You"
Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight." Miles Davis and John Coltrane do an amazing recording of this song. One of my all time favorites
Kenny Garrett's "Before it's Time to Say Goodbye" is another intense piece.
Sammy Nestico's "Samantha" is a Jazz parallel to Green Sleeves.
Pat Matheny did a song called "Dream of the Return," and Bob Curnow's big band arrangement is stunning.
I am not sure of the original composer of this, but Donald Grantham's arrangement of "Southern Harmony" has very powerful music in it.
Samuel Hazo's "Perthshire Majesty" is similar to Green Sleeves, but more subdued.
Phil Woods and Art Farmer playing Henry Mancini's "Two for the Road"

That is all I have right now. I will probably add more to list as time goes on though.

Where'd you go by Fort Minor

The only reason this song affected me was because after somebody who I thought was just a good friend of mine moved away, she sent me this song along with a long email about the feelings she really had for me. I take pride in the fact that I do not show sadness, but this is the only email I have read that made me cry.

In My Life. that song almost makes me cry every time i hear it. it makes me think of all the important people in my life, dead and alive, and especially the ones i love.

Shadow of the Day by Linkin Park.

I was just listening to this at a time where I was really overwhelmed with a lot of work and things going on in my life and it really kind of hit me hard.

I have a funny/emotionally scarring story relating this song that isn't worth telling.

Most of the songs on my computer/ipod remind me of something that has happened in my life. Especially with MUSE, I can pop in one of their more recent cd's and either have memories or things that are currently happening in my life related to almost every song.

Sad but True by Metallica. The reason I've picked this song is because it shows me how people react around myself and/or my friends and family. It also tells me that there will be friends who betray, and there will be friends that are always there for me, even though the song doesn't specifically mention that in detail.

Is that not what songs are for?
To change your mood or keep it the same as it is.
Like say I want to feel happy or silly then I listen to Caramelldansen Speedycake version!
sad: Bring me to Life

A song that I relate to myself would have to be Obsession by Yuki Kajiura.
Not for sure how to explain it relates to me but it puts me in a state of understanding how I am acting.
To stop and think out my actions and see how i have messed up.

Cat and Mouse by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. The sound just made me cry because of a recent let down, if you will.

Pretty much the entire album "The Black Halo" by Kamelot. That and the album "Character" by Dark Tranquillity

"The Black Halo" by Kamelot had some songs on it that really reached out and touched me when I needed it. Tracks like "Soul Society", "Abandoned", "Moonlight," "Memento Mori", and the title track "The Black Halo" itself. This is an album that I've let people listen to, and their opinion about Metal has been changed forever. If you're one of those people that thinks metal is talentless, screaming, angst ridden garbage, look this album up. I recommend this album/band to anybody that likes anything with electric guitar.

The other album, "Character" is significantly louder and heavier than the previous. The vocals are growled, and it's got a more aggressive sound to it. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's talentless, screaming, angst ridden garbage either. It's screamed, yeah, but that's a worthless drop in the bucket to me. The songs "Lost to Apathy", "Mind Matters", "Am I 1?" and "My Negation" are the tracks that really got to me off of this album, more than the others.

Dark Tranquillity definitely isn't a band I'd suggest to everybody, simply because of the vocal styling. If you're able to look past the growled vocals and distorted guitars, though... there's some cool, meaningful stuff here (to me, anyway).

Dark Tranquillity and Kamelot are easily my two favorite musical acts. Honorable mentions to Opeth with the "Damnation" album, ShamRain with "Goodbye to all That" and to Paradise Lost with "Draconian Times".
