I would have been more thorough about recording game progress and results etc. but I was ill and it was difficult enough to play let alone write a report :( In a few games, I was coughing a lot throughout.

Swiss games were a mix of easy and difficult games. I went 5-1, my loss was to a T1 Flygon ex where I simply could not setup. The best and most difficult game of the day for me was against a Flariados build. I had to resort to flipping for Dragonite's agility until I topdecked the castform I needed to use Mew P5's copy attack on spider trap on Skarmory ex. After windstorming the crystal beach and laying another energy, I could copy Skarmory ex's second attack to KO it because of fire weakness. In another game, someone had someone else of the same sleeves'

Top Cut

I made top 8 as 6th seed, so I was paired versus 3rd seed player Omar. Omar was using a Feraligatr and Exeggutor build that was simply too slow. Throw in lightning weakness and it was an auto-win both games.

Now I was paired against Ross Alexander, the player who knocked out my friend Ollie in the previous round. Ross was using a Flygon ex build but did not delta draw in either game. On the second game, I asked his hand size at the end of his first turn. Based off of 7 to start, -1 for the basic played, -1 for the transceiver played, -1 for the cost of the holon supporter, he should have had 4 but there were 5 in his hand... Ian Fotheringham was reassuring that it would be OK, but Ross was in tears. Whether or not he had cheated is an opinion, or a viewpoint but the ruling was given that it was an accident and the extra card returned to the top. Latios* helped a lot in making this matchup easy.

In the final I was against Adam, undefeated with Destiny. I never expected destiny to be playable in our metagame because of all the Flygon ex around but somehow he did it! In both games I delta drew with benched dratinis using Dragonites as main attackers. I could not use Mew POP5 much because Adam focused on using Mew ex as main attacker. I lost the first game, and time was called on the second while we were of equal prizes (I could have won the following turn as Metagross had the potential to crush and burn to destroy any of Adam's pokémon when we were left 1-1 prizes, so I came second place.

Overall: 9 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw.

Props:

SECOND PLACE! Yey!
Trophy
Playing Adam's awesome destiny
Good pulls in the booster boxes
Great friends

Slops:

Hey man, you were unlucky, I was watching the final from a little way away and you played it correctly. Destiny beats metanite 80-20 usually, you came close when you realy looked unwell. Sorry my advice pre-game didn't get you the win you wanted :(

Basically don't worry about it - 2nd place is amazing. Get well soon and I'm looking forward to playing you in the masters next year.

It was a fun final to watch iwrin gave me some kettle chips which were tasty but when adam was with one prize and beeing 1-0 up I knew it was all over but theres always next year

I can't wait for Masters

I actually made a horrid misplay on the last turn, I used Delta charge, then found there were no lightnings in my discard . Something I have never done before, I thought there were 2 there the turn before. I could have used researcher discarded lightning from hand to get metal, attached that and delta charge metagross, then retreat and crush and burn to win that game. Regardless, it must be 5:95 of Metanite winning sudden death, so I'm not beating myself up over it. Maybe with a hand of beldum, candy, metagross, dratini, candy, dragonite, lightning and draw a supporter then delta control for a metal and lightning after that and supporter to get 5 energies on Metagross and KO Rayquaza ex when he has insufficent energy (plus the metal stops a 2HKO without cursed stone).

But that simply isn't going to happen

If Top8 pairings had been Adam v Ross and his uber-luck of first turn Flygon exs or I'd ran Rayquaza* then it would have all been different but I am so happy. How can I complain about second place when there were many players like Nick and yourself that it all went wrong for? It was fantastic to be in the final and to see Adam go all out against me and I wish him all the best for Worlds!

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

It was a fun final to watch iwrin gave me some kettle chips which were tasty but when adam was with one prize and beeing 1-0 up I knew it was all over but theres always next year

Oh actually no, I had complete control of that game but there was no hope because destiny is the best sudden death deck.

alex are you still in the seniors next year ?

Only if the age groups are changed again to balance out numbers.

If there were no Lightning in your discard pile, Delta Charge could never have taken place, so you didn't use it XD

Oh well, GJ anyways.

Moza: Nice question. One for the prof test perhaps.

I'd allow you to perform a game action to get L energy into the discard and then repeat the failed Delta Charge. The text for delta Charge leads me to believe that there has to be at least one L energy in the discard before you can actually announce that you are using "Delta Charge". Can't happen Didn't happen.

Well OMG! The other judge ruled otherwise! I'm only human, I can't help raising the issue and having a bit of a rant :frown: So I was wrong to make the assumption that judges know what they're talking about? Out of interest, if I HAD been allowed to delta charge (I only didn't check beforehand because we were so close to time) and thus won that game due to a fueled and attacking Metagross that KOed his active pokémon and taking my last prize, then what would have happened next? I can't imagine being able to win a sudden death but Adam could always start with Stantler and 6 energy or stadiums!

I HOPE that the readers can understand, if Adam was in this position, I would not lie back and refuse to make any attempt to resolve the situation (even if it was not compulsory).

To end my post on a positive :)smile:) you were a great judge Ian.

A judge can't (okay make that shouldn't) say anything that might hint that if you place energy in the discard that you can try again. We have to avoid anything that might be interpreted as coaching. Its not easy to answer such questions without also potentially giving out play information!

Obviously I don't know exactly what was said or even what you heard. (They aren't always the same! *grin*)

Its not easy being a judge.

checks back through thread.. oops. I forgot to offer my congratulations on your 2nd place finish.

Of course, that's perfectly acceptable. It happens that all I asked was whether the move was possible or not (e.g. in the same context as can I play a second stadium this turn? Which I know you can't, just an example). Judge's answer was no, it was not a legal move.

Hmm, why haven't I said anything yet?

Well, I like you, mate, after trading, and a spamfest, as well as your great decklists.

Anyway, even though I know Adam from league, I'm sorry you didn't win.

Well played though. I APPROVE.

Congrats!!!!! I played you in the final round before the top cut- it's good to know that I was beaten by one of the best!!!

destiny won? oh **** no! you could have at least wasted him for me.

in case your wondering im 3rd place dude

BTW, I got my "Begone foul crystal beach" moment :D

My deck wasn't built to counter Destiny. Flygon, Flariados, Raieggs, yes. I don't know Destiny particularly well, but a lot of the decks I faced seemed to be a tough matchup for it. In the Ollie v Ross top8 game, Ross Turn Oned a Flygon ex both games. I lost to Ross' Turn One Flygon ex in Swiss too. How on Earth would Destiny stand up to that??!! It all comes down to pairings and dicerolls in the end.

Well done Dan.
