Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

An old vet returning to the game..Where can I find an online rulebook?

Ah....this card game and I share a lot of memories. In middle school, I went to my local shop tournament
every Saturday where I communed with my fellow trainers. I even made it to WCSTS 2001 in San Diego one time.. Well, I'm in 10th grade now, and I haven't played since the Legendary Collection, meaning I don't know too much about the newage stuff like Ruby/Sapphire Pokes. I'm finally getting back into my old favorite game, so if someone could direct me to a good online rulebook that explains the changes since the third generation of Pokemon came out (namely, stuff like how does having two types affect damage calculation). Thanks for your time, and I'll be sticking around these forums after I learn the new rules to check out the most popular archetypes.

EDIT: Well I guess this would also be a good time to ask, What are the staples of today? In modified? In unlimited? What are the legal sets for modified?

I'll move this to the Single Cards/Strategy forum so everyone can chime in, but I remember you.
Welvome back.

The www.pokemon-tcg.com site has a rulebook up in its "How to Pay" section, but it's dated. It doesn't include the new rules that the person going first can't play Supporters on their first turn.
Other than that, all the rule changes should be in there.
Note the difference between old Baby Pokemon and new Basic Pokemon that have the Baby Evolution Poke-Power. The new cards are Basics, you don't flip to attack them.

You can only retreat once, and Confusion does 3 damage counters on a failed attack. But you can retreat out of it without flipping (but remember, only one retreat per turn!).
What else...

First player doesn't draw a card...

Check out the Compendium EX (located in it's own part of this site) for errata, card rulings, and generally a lot of info.

Most commonly used cards nowadays...

Celio's Network (EX FireRed & LeafGreen)
Steven's Advice EX Hidden Legends)
TV Reporter (EX Dragon)
Rare Candy (EX Sandstorm)
Copycat (EX Team Rocket Returns and Expedition)

Pidgeot (EX FireRed & LeafGreen)
Blaziken (EX Ruby & Sapphire)
Rayquaza ex (EX Dragon)

Dark Dragonite (EX Team Rocket Returns)
Dark Electrode (EX Team Rocket Returns)

Dunsparce (EX Sandstorm)

Zapdos ex (EX FireRed & LeafGreen)

Just off the top of my head.

In Modified, it's Ruby & Sapphire onward, with the Nintendo promos thrown in I believe. Seems to be dominated by Blaziken, Dark Dragonite, Zapdos ex.

Unlimited is still dominated by Sneasel/Slowking, Blastoise...

Hope this helped a bit.

BTW welcome back to the game.

Thanks!

What a nice board..I get all the info I asked for the day I ask for it. Reminds me of the good ol pojo days... If you all have any more info on how Pokemon has changed in the past two or three years, please
continue posting. Meanwhile, I'll be browsing these forums for newage strategies and reading spoilers
for all those new sets. :D

Some EX pokemon seem good but they give 2 prizes if they are KOed and you MUST watch out for desert ruins from the hidden legends set.

EX Pokes

They seem good...but are they good? I played this kid with EX Pokemon, and he wasn't good at all.
Yet he beat my Haymaker with Gardevoir EX. The speed of Buzz and Scyther couldn't keep up with
all his HP and powerful attacks. So are any EX pokes good? Like that Mewtwo?

Aw man..another problem.
DUAL TYPES....Grr..
Erm, what if my Pokemon were Fire and Fighting, and your pokemon is weak to Fire and Fighting? Do you take
double damage, or more or what? What if I attacked and your pokemon is weak to Fire and resistant to Fighting?
Do I double damage first, then subtract 30, or does it do damage normally, etc? And finally, what if your pokemon
is resistant to both Fire and Fighting? -60? -30?

From the Compendium:

== WEAKNESS AND RESISTANCE

Q. At a recent tournament, the TO ruled that if a Pokémon has resistance to a particular type, and a dual-type Pokémon is that type and something else, it doesn't affect that Pokémon's attack at all. Is this true?
A. No. If a Pokémon has more than one type, each type still counts against the Defending Pokémon's Weaknesses or Resistances. (May 20, 2004 PUI Rules Team)

Q. If Kecleon has several types of energy attached and the Defending Pokémon is both Weakness and Resistance to these types, does Kecleon have to apply both W & R or not?
A. Apply them in order. Weakness, then Resistance. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team)

Q. If Kecleon has two different colored basic energies attached, and it attacks a Pokémon with weakness to both of those colors (i.e. Kabutops-EX), is the weakness calculation doubled because Kecleon is both types?
A. Sure. Damage would be up to x4 for the appropriate double Weakness. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team)

Q. If Kecleon has two different colored basic energies attached, and it attacks a Pokémon with resistance to both of those colors (i.e. Salamence is resistant to both Fire & Fighting), is the Resistance calculation doubled because Kecleon is both types?
A. Yes. Just like double-Weakness would result in x4 damage, double-Resistance would result in -60 damage (-30 times two). (May 13, 2004 PUI Rules Team)

Hope this helps. :D

How about first sending the card you owe me???
too many excuses for not sending, and as I wrote after 20 PM's, I will now reply in public to warn all other honest players.
Anyone that knows Chris in person, please tell him to send out the card he owes my 8 yrs old son.

Hope you will all help to solve this!

Greetings John

Yeah, I was wondering how he'd react to that. XD

Haha. Looks like Otaku knows my deck.

The Slashtap deck abuses the Double Gust/all free retreat Pokemon combo, and that retreat rule slows it down. :nonono:

I know this sounds seriously rude but correction:
A very well done article by Carl Chavez

http://www.pokemon-tcg.com/p_strategy/archives/strategy_456.jsp

It shows rules on some basic, like no 1st turn supporters, draws and that old cards are allowed to play by new rules if they get reprinted.

Its not displayed well under Basic Rules and only briefly explained in Expert Rules

Thats all they have i guess..
You should also remember to resolve muligans befor setting prizes.
Decide on who to go 1st before drawing hand from deck.
