Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Anyone else eyeing the new Shiftry?

Remember how good Dusknoir DP was? This card is better - on a flip.

It may see some competitive play.

It may. I don't doubt that when Shiftry succeeds on the coin flip, it's bad news bears for whoever is on the short end of that stick, but there's some very important differences that I want to address between the two (assuming the OP's translation is accurate and my reading comprehension isn't rebelling against me):

  • Shiftry's attack requires a coin flip, whereas Dusknoir's did not, meaning that there is the possibility of failure - if playing a deck that relies on such a method, then the efficacy is sorely compromised
  • Rare Candy has been severely limited - the possible 'surprise' tech of Shiftry is not only greatly hindered in its capacity because they can see the Pokemon coming, but also they can snipe / Catcher / whathaveyou it to death before it becomes a possible threat
  • Shiftry not only requires a coin flip, but is also a coming into play power - that means that for each Shiftry, you have one shot, and that one shot is reliant on a 50/50 chance. Additionally, that one shot is a Stage 2 Pokemon with a mediocre attack. Dark Palm, in comparison, was viable every turn, insofar as the 4 bench condition was fulfilled. That - because of the aforementioned Rare Candy surprise tech maneuver - made Dusknoir was a viable tech.

I don't know, maybe I'm terribly wrong, but I don't see Shiftry as an effective card at all, since it fails to fulfill one of the two positions it's meant to fulfill with its Ability. It's not an effective main or secondary support card since it requires a lot of work to maintain, has a lackluster attack and can be OHKO'd by a Donphan with Pluspower. Additionally, it cannot fulfill its role as a tech because of not only its limitations by the Rare Candy rule change, but also because of the fact that its crowning Ability is reliant on an uncontrollable and unpredictable outcome.

Of course, this is all theory, so Shiftry, for some reason, could become BCIF for all I know.

As stated, it would be a great card to use in decks that are completely shut down by ZPS, like Party Face.

Although given how much room he takes up, you'd be better off just teching in some energy removal cards and defanging Zekrom that way.

Not that I would run this partner, but Clefable could be a tech card as well. (well unless you had 3 benched seedots). Once a turn you might Big Fan away.

If it weren't for the fact that

A) It's flippy (and please don't cry Victini, as it's not a miracle worker and you can still miss the flip)

and

B) Only available once when you evolve into Shiftry (remember it's now a lot slower getting out Stage 2s)

It'd be a lot better. But as the fan translation stands now, it's not good for anything except binder material or kindle for a fire (and even then I bet it probably doesn't work too well as kindling).

Yes, but keep in mind, if you're investing allot of your resources into dropping multiple shifty, ditto, seeker, and drifblim, what are you really going to be attacking with? The next question I have, is if it's really worth the investment? Don't get me wrong if it works it definitely is, the ability to immediately remove a pokemon from the field is huge. My problem is you could get seadot, rare candy, shiftry, and nothing. Right there that's allot of work for a whole lot of nothing. I'm just not sure it's worth it, especially since shiftry's attack is terrible. I'm not saying it's a bad card, don't get me wrong, but the flippyness of it would definitely have me worried.

wtf they have 6 basics out turn 2?
