Anyone else sad about the X and Y Basic Energy?

So X and Y has hit the... well, not shelves, but gotten into folks hands at least. I was really hoping to see some sort of design on the new energy cards, as we've started to see in the past with the starting set of a new block. HG/SS brought us gorgeous silhouette energy that I still clamor for, and B/W had the checked energy that was certainly appropriate for the set. Now X and Y hits, and we're back to the, well, basic basic energy, and I'm a little sad. Especially with these products giving us easier access to basic basic energy (most notably the amazing ETB's!), opening packs to find basic basics is a little disappointing. I had hoped a precedent for energy redesigns in each block had been set. Anyone else sad to see this not be the case?

All Base Sets have energies so I don't see the point in being sad regarding that...
I do agree that they have been changing the past few formats, however it shouldn't be THAT much of a surprise that they are back to the nostalgic design... The fairy energy in the Sylveon box was an indicator...

Ditto this. The Theme Decks through BW had plain energy which was fine, but at least something more decorative in BW Base was nice. Same with HS. Was definitely disappointing to see the "theme deck" style energy in the XY packs I saw opened at Prerelease.

I'm honestly kinda disappointed that the card layout AND the energy didn't get revamped, I always enjoy some change to that each new generation.

I would have liked to see some sort of unique design but at the same time this is the first time we're getting Fairy energys so I think it's best if we got a "basic" designed card rather than give it a special design.

I'm not sad about seeing the energy - that's expected. However, we have so many sources for the 'nostalgic' energy you describe in bulk that it's nice to open something pretty instead when you're cracking a pack. No one is going to be opening packs to get Fairy energy, since it's in theme decks and the new ETB's, and that's cheaper. People WOULD open packs to get pretty Fairy energy though. Well, I would.

That's what the KSS, Elite Trainer Boxes, and theme decks are for.

We've had Fairy energy for two months now, for the record.

My friends and I noticed this too. It was disappointing opening the packs to see "normal" energy, as opposed to some cool design, but I suppose it can't be helped. Maybe at a later date, they'll release "pretty" energies in the packs (like HGSS Unleashed being the holo silhouettes, iirc).

the holo silhouette energies were in Call of Legends because nobody would've bought the set otherwise.

Still what Theme Decks are for—after all, I struggle to believe anyone actually can pull sufficient Fairy Energy from packs for a playset anyway.

They seem to be more common in the print run though. Out of the two prereleases I attended, I pulled 5 Fairy energy out of the 16 packs, and 0 fire, 0 lightning, 0 metal.

Yeah, the circumstantial evidence definitely points to Fairy being more common. In 3 boxes I got 3 Grass, 4 Fire, 4 Water, 5 Electric, 1 Psychic, 1 Fighting, 2 Dark, 6 Metal, and 12 Fairy.

Awesome. No secret rares, no foil energies, and no full-art trainers.

I don't know if this has ever been confirmed or not, but I open dozens of cases of each set and it certainly seems to me as thought cards of the same rarity are not printed with the same frequency.

Personally I've always felt there should be a basic energy in every booster pack. (Which has been done before, in the Gym sets. Not sure if any others did this.) Whether as an extra card, or replacing one of the commons. You shouldn't be required to buy a large amount of theme decks/trainer boxes to build up a decent supply of energy, especially if you're already buying a lot of packs. I know the little kids who basically just collect won't like pulling them, but there's probably already a lot of commons in each set they don't want to pull anyway, and they react similarly to the Uncommon Trainers. This goes for experienced players to some extent, too, as it makes little difference to most if they'd pull a Bidoof or a Psychic Energy. (Potentially even preferring the energy since it's marginally more useful.)

As for whether or not they should have had special designs... Eh, maybe. But it doesn't bother me much either way.

So far, all energy of a certain type looks the same if you pull it from the same set, but what if each energy type had multiple designs? In MTG, basic lands have 4 arts associated with them, so why can't the basic energies, that should be pulled from every booster pack, like you said, be like the HGSS ones, but rather than have the same silhouette of the same pokemon, have silhouette of different pokemon so long as it is the same type as the energy?

A new layout was one of the things I was most looking forward to.
