baby mario’s North States Report: 7-0 Again! (still in Seniors)

So, I decided to go to the final UK State Championship in Leeds. I had never been that far north before and it was a really long drive, so we booked a hotel for half way. My brother Ben got the train from Uni and met us there and I gave him a Pluffray deck to play at the tourney. He had a quick look at the cards and we played two matches and I lost both of them.

I decided to go with the same Luxchomp list that I used to go 7-0 with at the previous States. The report is buried in the graveyard of the International Forum here:

http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=122062

I knew people might tech against me, but . . . . meh . . . it’s a good list and I am very happy playing it, so I reckon I could get by on my skills and Luxchomp’s general BDIF qualities.

Anyway, on to the report . . . Sorry if I can’t remember all the names.

Round 1 vs ? (Blastoise/Gatr Prime)

Game 1 . . . Luxray and DCE start, I Sprayed her desperately needed Cosmic Power and KO’d the Claydol next turn. She couldn’t set up, so I took the Prizes. Second game I had bit of a nervous start as my opponent nearly had the donk on my lone Baltoy, getting a T1 Gatr but not having enough Energy. From there she couldn’t draw into any Supporters or set up, so when the Gatr went down it was all over.

1-0

Round 2 vs Legendary Lugia (Plox w/Gengar)

I set up fine with Uxies to start with. Uxie LV X won me the game here . . . intimidating his belted Gardy. I took Prizes off the Bench. To be fair, LL’s Prizes were terribad which didn’t help. Game 2, LL had a terrible hand and bad Prizes. He spent early Wagers trying to recover, but when I Sprayed his Azelf drop, he didn’t have much of a chance to get back into the game. LL is a cool guy and it was fun meeting someone I only knew from their Gym posts.

2-0

Round 3 vs Joe (Raybees)

Joe seemed to be playing a good list with Tombs, so this was tough. Game 1, he set up quickly, but once I took out his Claydol when he had a depleted hand, it made it tough for him to keep up with my deck. Game 2. He got a Tomb start. This is where I am glad I run 3 Bebe’s in Luxchomp. I KO’d an early Claydol and Joe just couldn’t set up from there.

3-0

Game 4 vs Max (Gengar)

Game 1 he got a T2 Gengar but missed the Energy drop which gave me a head start. I began to rotate Chomps doing Dragon Rush. Spraying his Uxie was crucial to the win. Game 2 he went for early Uxie and Azelf drops which meant cheap prizes for Chomp. He then got out two Gengars and started taking cheap Prizes on my Bench. Then suddenly I realised . . . I play Honchkrow! I played it down, Turned Luxray attached an Unown Q and brought up some easy KO’s for the last two Prizes.

4-0

Game 4 vs Jonathan (Donezator on the Gym w/ Luxchomp)

Donez actually teched for this mirror and I didn’t so I was expecting to lose. Game 1 he focused mainly on Trash Bolting me, but my early Chomp took out his Benched Chomp before he could use it on me. Knowing Luxray couldn’t OHKO anything of mine, I starting spamming Chomps, healing and killing his Chomps before they were a threat. Game 2. Terrible start with no Supporters. Donez went ahead early and I knew I couldn’t stop him from winning so I scooped. Game 3 I had a better start, taking two quick Prizes with Luxray. Time was then called so I win.

5-0

So, I’m the unbeaten player going into the top cut . . .

Top 4 vs Michael (Pluffray)

I really thought I would lose this as Pluff has a good match up with Luxchomp if it can get going. Unluckily for Michael, my hands were insanely good. Game 1 I opened with two Sprays and stopped 2 early Uxies. He had no chance to set up after that so he scooped. Game 2, I go first, attach to Ambipom G and end. Michael misses his Energy drop and only has a lone Bat. I attach to Ambipom, Bat, Turn, Bat . . . and that’s game with a slightly embarrassing donk. Sorry Michael.

6-0

Final vs Donez (Mirror)

Game 1 I have a bad start and he took fast easy Prizes. I tried to come back, but his Relicanth tech did the business and he took all six Prizes. Game 2 I get an awesome hand, get both Lux and Chomp up early and just took a Prize every turn to win.

After we had set up for Game 3, the judge told us that he wouldn’t be ending the game when time was up, but because it was such a close final he thought it better if we played it out to a finish regardless of time. I did question this, but Judge’s decision is final (just like referees!).

My opening hand was good for a quick start but not much else. I took early Prizes, but then Donez came right back into it after he sprayed an Uxie drop I really needed. In the end he started to run out of resources so I moved up Ambipom G and started moving his Energy on to an Uxie to slow him down. Eventually I topped into an Uxie myself and this time I used it to draw 7.We were both down to two Prizes each. He had just Flash Impacted my Chomp for 60. I topped into a Chomp X and realised that I could take the last two Prizes with a Bat drop + attack, but I also knew he was holding a Spray. I decided to bluff him and levelled up Chomp and used Healing Breath. I knew he would likely Spray it because he had the KO next turn, and I would lose my last E Gain. Luckily Donez fell for it, Sprayed the Healing Breath. I used Radar to get a Bat and KO’d his Benched Bronzong. I then sniped Azelf for the last Prize. Very good, very close games Donez!

7-0

So . . . I win my second States undefeated!

Glad you had a great time Jak... great report... and yeah, we love that Italian restaurant too

Congratulations to Jak, Ranked top Senior in the UK and second senior in Europe with a rating of 1870.30!

Well done Jak!

PS, he is overall 19th in the World (All divisions)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

wait are you going to be master soon or something?

Yeah, he ages up next year. Going to be some tough games for me.

Congrats Jak, that ranking is really good. You're definately one of the favourites for Nationals this year :thumb:

It's funny how you always mention that you're playing in Seniors. It seems you'd rather play in Masters to prove you're good nonetheless, that it doesn't matter you're a Seniors and could beat any Masters up (No offence towards the Seniors in England, tho!).

I was in the same boat, pal... at least if I guessed right.

Nah, it's just a joke really. There's loads of people on the Gym who say that Seniors doesn't count for much, so I put that in the title so they don't have to read on.

There's plenty of very good Seniors in the UK. Nats will be very tough this year.

Hey Jak remember me ? :D

Lol I haven't posted here in ages, meh, good job on undefeated at 2 states ! Good to hear you're doing pretty well. Keep it up, hope to see you at Worlds. :)
