Beckham joins MLS

In a very lucrative contract David Beckham has joined MLS 'soccer' side 'LA Galaxy'.

In my opinion it's going to be a disaster for him (not financially though). Even though by the standards of the players around him he'll look amazing, it realy signals the fact he's no longer good enough as a competitive player. They'll also be a lot of people who won't understand why he doesn't score a goal a game, and they'll be putHe'll fill the smaller grounds for several months but I doubt his comitment to play through hot summers and when the crowds return to low numbers like 15,000. I give him no more than 2 years.

So has he joined just for the money? Will he make the game more popular?

Of course he did it for the money. Why else would he give up representing his country in soccer?

His motives from what I've heard sound pretty good. I doubt he's doing it just for money, as the way it stands he could stay with Real Madrid for the rest of his career (he could probably even just retire just now) and still live for the rest of his life more comfortably than some of us ever will. He made points that he wants to popularise soccer in the US, particularly as its increasing in popularity with womens and youth groups, and I think that's fair enough.

I do, however, agree that he could probably do this better by other methods rather than moving to an area with lesser popularity. I think he'll last for his entire deal, but barring the huge boost of popularity that he hopes for or a couple of good tournament/cup wins, I doubt his career would continue.

EDIT: FWIW, Gir, he was dropped from the England squad late last year and gave up as England captain earlier. So he can't represent his country anyway.

He hasn't been good enough for England for several years now, it wasn't his choice in not playing, it was McClarens (wise choice). This just signals that he's now accepted he's over the hill.

No offense to anyone who likes soccer, but IMO we shouldn't have the sport here. Worst sport IMO.
I agree with DCP, if he is serious. Soccer will never, and should never be big in the U.S

US : American Football; Basketball; Baseball; Hockey.
Soccer should stay over there.

He's been playing professional football for Real Madrid for the last few years anyway. Soccer players think nothing of moving to clubs in other countries, heck most of the top players in England can barely speak the language.

What strikes me is how the American league's wage structure is set up. It's utterly moronic. There's a wage cap in place that's far below what any decent club in Europe pays. So that's a talent drain in place anyway; as soon as a decent player emerges in the MLS they hike off to other countries to earn real soccer money. However, each club can nominate one "star player" and can pay that player whatever they want, which is why Beckham is getting so much dosh. That's another problem. He's being paid more than five times what the rest of the team makes in total. How the heck is that supposed to be good for team morale?

I don't think any of you Americans need to worry about soccer becoming popular over there when it's own system is strangling it to death.

And on that subject, wouldn't you Americans like to be good at sports that the rest of the world actually plays?

Edit: It's been a long time since I've been really active on these boards, but did we always have a post count?

I thought hockey was Canada? How is it the worst sport ? It's just as hard, if not harder than any other sport in the U.S.

Well I made an *** out of myself lol.

No we prefer getting pwned in our own sports. I.E World Basketball championships and 04 Olympics.

I support his reason to come here and I don't think its for the cash since he is already set anyway.

But his motive won't work since people here want instant satisfaction with a player or unless they're out!
This will happen to Beckham since he is not a goal scorer nowadays. Americans expect high scoring out of international players. I.E Diasuke, Yao, Darko Milicic.

I don't think this will work out. It's a shame that people need international motivation to play something. Beckham's motive is to be the succesor of Pele in promoting American football.

And theres the real issue in my opinion, if the greatest player of all time couldn't crack America, why will Beckham do it when he hasn't been in a team winning silverware for the past 4 years, and has never taken England beyond the last 8 of anything.

You could say that it's the Beckham brand that might do it, but then why wasn't George Best succesful?

Alex, the duck is MUCH MUCH BETTER then beckham, alex the duck is a world champion with 17 years, and beckham isn't world champion !

S.C. INTERNACIONAL WORLD CHAMPION !!!

I don't even know why are they trying to make soccer popular in the US. I mean they already got huge fans in Asia, Europe, Africa and South America.

I think this can help the MLS soccer fan base. Beckham is a good player but IMO very overated, he is mainly good for free kicks and direct kicks but when it comes down to be a team player I feel he isn't one. He is very lazy and selfish. But he would help the MLS IMO, when Pele came to the states and played for the New York Cosmos he made soccer big in the united states. The fan base nearly doubled because of won player and when backham comes here I feel that can help the fan base, not as much as the great Pele did but a little bit is better than nothing. Also when Zinadine Zidane comes to MLS(He will come after contract is up) and when the once great Ronaldo come shere it will help fan base. The reason why soccer isnt big here in the USA is because America loves seing people get hurt, You can argue witht hat all you want, americans love seeing people get broken legs and arms and stuff and just love seing someone get beaten up and bruised(UFC talk). Americans don't like games that are beautiful, soccer is a very beautiful game IMO, angles galour, formations and beautiful shots with nice bends and curves. Some say soccer is a "*****" sport and if you play soccer then you are a "Field Fairy" but in reality soccer players train harder than football players, basketball players, and every sport. Soccer players run constantly(or atleast should), Football you get a break for 30 seconds after every play...soccer, no breaks, constant running moving and thinking really hard as to where you should be on the field to position yourself for opportunities. Also, soccer is a very rough game beleive it or not. After every game I have bruises on me and same to everyone else, legs get broken all the time honestly, arms as well, people getting broken noses almost every game that I play in. I myslef have broken atleast 3-4 peoples nose because of me taking a shot at about 15-20 yars away and hitting the keeper. There is elbows in the face, people literally kicking you in the balls when the ref isn't looking. So when people say soccer is a wussy sport then they are wrong, no it isnt a matter of opinion it is a fact. Sorry I got off subject there but that rambling was for dabadman seing as he doesn't like soccer. BUt I think Beckham is great for American soccer.
dabadman on a side note, you do realize what sport pulls in the most money in the world and what gets more attendence and what is mor popular in the worl right??? Soccer... and soccer is the most played sport in America in youth play. Also when you see the punters for football and hockey players and a few basketball players and even tennis players, you know where they all started from, soccer.....

Wasn't 2006 World Cup the most watched event in the history of television.

That's what Wikipedia said.
I dont think it was the most watched event in history, olympics are I beleive ahead of it but IDK, if Wikipedia said it then it probably is true.

Hockey is from Canada, but hockey is popular, and a North American sport...

On topic, why is everyone so excited over him? I am sure there is someone just as good playing for a horrible team not getting any credit ...
Oh, and I never said soccer wasn't a popular sport in the world, I am talking about in the U.S.

I don't care what it does in other countries. And I never said it was a wussy sport, I just don't like it... None of my family, or any of the people around me do... And to tell you the truth, only one player on my football team last year played Soccer, and it was a backup Cornerback.

-_- ... I meant played in the US a lot. There is a lot of teams in the US that we know about, soccer we don't really.

Well it depends on where you're coming from and if you're into it. Like me, I don't know squat nor do I care about baseball or football, and basketball at that.

Anyways, lets get back on topic eh?

How much $$$ is Beckham going to get?
