A few other decent starters are Mawhile (PK), Tauros (CG), Smoochum (DF), Spinda (SW), Sentret (SW), and Mr. Mime (MT). The starter you use largely depends on what deck you are using. Typically, a starter serves a few different functions: drawing additional cards, searching, attacking, stalling, or disruption.
Many starters can draw more cards for you until they get KO'd, examples include Spinda (SW), Lickitung d (DF), and any of the pokemon with the attack Collect.
Searching starters are also common and include the various Call for Family types as well as things like Smergle (SW) which searches for energy.
Attacking starters are basics whose main purpose is to do fast damage, Riolu (DP) is a perfect example of this kind of starter. Other attackers include Farfetchd (SW) and Magmar (MT).
Stalling starters and disruption starters are very similar, but they go about doing their jobs a little differently. Stallers typically have high HP for a basic and some defensive ability to go on top of that. Mr. Mime (MT) or Sableye (CG) would be examples of a staller. The purpose is to slow your opponent's attacks down long enough for you to set up your side.
Disrupters also try and slow your opponent down enough so you can set up before they can. Absol (SW) is currently the best disruptor in the game, but others include Surskit (MT) and anything that can cause Sleep, Confusion, Paralyze, disacrd effects, or energy removal.
