If you want to up attendance and make organized play relevant...Then you need to step up communications. We weren't due some Earth-shattering announcement, but we're also due some better communication than "oh give us a sec - we'll tell you about those massive Regional tournaments when we're ready...Even though they're only two months away."

How are they supposed to keep attendance up? Would they expect a new player to randomly stumble upon the tournaments in a two week span? Any tournament deserves a one month notice at least.
I would expect a new player to come to league first instead of a tournament

Trouble is, most new players don't understand how Pokemon OP works. My first Pokemon OP experience was a City Championship, and considering I had never looked at websites like the Pokegym or talked to people who played the game competitively, I think my first league session was over a year later. My perspective on that is now completely different then when I first started, but it took me over a year to get to grips with everything.

For what it's worth, I think we boosted the attendance of that City Championship by nearly 20% with a group of players who didn't even know what a modified format was, until 1 week earlier! It's better to have players attending some form of Pokemon OP, then none at all.

Speaking of getting into the game, there is absolutely NO way of knowing about league/etc unless you attend the comic shop/library/whatever and HAPPEN to come across a sign or poster about pokemon. Instead of having commercials about sets, have television commercials about "CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL POKEMON LEAGUE AT POKEMON.COM!" or something to that effect....

I ended up randomly hearing about a regional tournament in 2004. That was my very first experience with pokemon. And if it wasn't for Meganium45 setting up a side tournament for me and my friends (with base/fossil/jungle card decks) I might not even be in this game! I didn't attend a league until years later...

Not for nothing, but did anyone else notice that the ratings are set at 0.00, and not 1600.00 like previous seasons? Think this means a shift to pro points?

I am 94% sure that last year they went to 0.00 until you played in your first event. Then they started adjusting up or down from 1600.

Good idea :thumb:

That wouldn't be hard to do, kinda like those tag lines they through on at the end of online game commercials (i.e. "Please get your parent's permission before going online")

I got into the game because of a commercial at the end of Pokemon 2000.

...Which means to suggest that you think the whole movie "wasn't" just some big commercial?

"My Mew card started it all..."

"MY COLLECTION! I MUST HAVE THEM!"

Etcetc

Patriarch, how many American-made kids shows AREN'T essentially big commercials these days? Or ever? I'm surprised that it took Japan this long to get with the program, honestly.

^ ...Any number between zero and none. I just thought the marketing in Pokemon 2k was by far the funniest. : )

Pokemon probably won't start a pro points system for a couple years. It took them years from when players were asking for a 3 turn clock at the end of their matches for OP to finally start doing it.
