Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Black -White or X-Y

I just got back into Pokemon after a few years off, and I found out that my cards are not tournament legal. Should I buy some BW cards now, or should I use my old cards in leagues to shake off the rust, then buy X-Y cards when they come out in October and start tournament play then?

If you don't have BLW cards by now then I recommend you wait until next year which will probably when Pokemon X and Y are released. When Pokemon X and Y is released Pokemon Black and White will still be playable for about another year or so. You should play your old cards at leagues as you'll become use to playing Pokemon so you'll be pretty much ready when Pokemon X and Y come out but you will be at a disadvantage as everyone use powerful Exs which much stronger than any old card. If your into selling your cards 10 years after they stopped being released, as you get a lot of money for it then you should get Black and White as it's still around for about 2 years and you'll be able to play more than just leagues and you'll be about even with everyone else in format.

It really depends, personally I'd say wait until XY too. I'm waiting but just because I don't like the B&W series.

There's plenty of discussion going on about the release schedule in Japan with some wondering if the worldwide release of the video games is going to cross over into the cards. No one's sure what the rotation will be next year so you could be buying cards that rotate in October.

What ever you choose to do there's always Unlimited, either the regular type or other varieties (there's an article in my sig.) if you want to use your old cards until October.

HEZ, I really doubt that BLW will rotate in October because remember HGSS it didn't rotate until after NVI so BLW could still be in format for another full 2 years.

What is NVI? I know very little about anything TCG except how to play.

NVI is Noble Victories. It was the 3rd Black and White set released Nov 16th 2011.

As has been mentioned, BLW will be around for a while, so I don't see the harm in picking up some. Who knows when it'll switch to XY

It's the "who knows" that's the problem. If the simultaneous TCG release theory turns out to be true that probably means everywhere will be playing the same format as Japan. The last time we changed generation Japan did a hard rotation to B&W on. I might be biased because it's what I really want, but I think at least waiting to see what comes after Meglocanon is a good 1st step. As it stands the sets up to Meglocanon would give us cards to last until Oct, if there ends up being more B&W Japanese sets I've no idea how this will work out for us.

I personally enjoy the current format- I don't place well at any competitive events, but I still have fun. And this upcoming set, Plasma Storm, is going to introduce a great number of new staples into the format, and Plasma Pokemon are going to make evolutions finally competitive again, so personally I'd start collecting now if you have the cash to throw at it. Watch some modified-legal League games and see if you like the playing style (spoiler alert: it's EX-centric). Even if we get the XY series right in October, the cards we have now will in all likelihood not be rotated out immediately, so I'd invest now and have fun.

I agree with Darkrai EX, when BW9 comes out which will hold Ghetsis, everyone will have the chance to win as whoever gets Ghetsis down 1st has pretty much won, in my point of view, this format is about to become very disruptive in consistency and I know quite a few people are happy about this. I doubt we're getting Pokemon X and Y in TCG in October as we're still got 2 more Japanese sets to go and I bet they'll be maybe 3 more because remember BLW came out in TCG about 9 months after the game. A new set comes out every 3 months so here is the pattern for this year;

February: Plasma Storm
May: Thunder Knuckle/Spiral Force
August: Megalo cannon
November: ??? (maybe Pokemon X and Y)
January: ??? (might also be Pokemon X and Y)

That's something to be happy about? 0_o Why don't we just play heads or tails and leave it at that? We can throw all our excess cards out and just keep the cool shiny Pokemon coins.

Anyway, I'm done derailing this guys thread. My opinion... if you can pick some new cards up for cheap for casual play, fine. Competitively I think it's only going to get more degenerate in B&W. Otherwise I'd wait and see what's going to happen with the release of XY.

Then I play my Juniper/N/Supporter.

I extremely doubt that as Pokemon has never cut off half a set before and I doubt that they're planning to now.

Not sure what you mean here.

No, they have never cut a set in half when it comes to rotation (that would be plain stupid), but they have split a block before now (HP-on, MD-on).
