Is that a 70 HP Basic that evolves twice I see there? Wow. And to think I used to get excited about a Basic that had 50...

Meh, I think there's a legal 70 HP Pikachu floating around somewhere. Hard to say, I've never been interested in playing a Raichu lol.

Anyways, if a rodent can pick up on 70 HP I'd imagine a pig could do a bit better. Though I agree, I don't think I've seen any basics in a Stage 2 evolutionary line with 70 HP yet lol

We've seen plenty of final stage 1s that have 70+ HP basics. Scizor, Vire, Magmortar, etc. This I believe is the first time a final stage 2's basic has 70+ HP. CAn anybody confirm this for me?

And Rhyhorn is known in the games for having higher HP than most Basic forms.

Are we moving the spectrum once again? I remember a time when 120HP was the hard-and-fast limit for all Pokemon. Even when ex was first introduced, the rank-and-file adhered to that 120HP limit, while only the stage 2 exs broke it. For guys like Wailord and Blissey, I kinda understand. But it's starting to get ridiculous with the power and HP creep in this game...

Well, like I said, I think the HP rise might be a reaction to the realisation that +X weakness is too ineffective and X2 weakness with the lower HP totals is too devastating, so they're trying to find a happy medium where pokemon last a little bit longer on average and aren't as hopelessly outmatched facing their weakness.

Woooooo @ the card borders not being all nasty! Based on the superbig scan on the 'beach, it looks like (promo only?) cards that are holo also have a holo border.

That makes me happy - grey borders make me not happy.

Tell me about it. T-Tar alone is a pain with 160, I remember when DP first came out I thought the high HP was ridiculous for only 1 prize KO's.

Double weakness is a welcome return to deal with this (Though I think the lower HP Pokes should have adjusted weaknesses), but some are hard to exploit and we still have Exploud around =/

If you look at the Pokemon from the HGSS set, it seems like most of the Pokemon's attacks are what many of you consider to be 'not that great', for a general paraphrase. I believe this along with the higher HP is their formula to start to revert Pokemon back to its original state, where you actually had to attack for more than one turn to knock something out, and this is indeed a much welcomed return for me. I feel that the higher HP and generally weaker attacks as of recent are most certainly done for a reason. While it would be irresponsible for them to have started off HGSS sets with REDUCED hp and attacks (which would render everything useless due to the extremely excessive power, speed, and cheapness of SP attacks) they chose to keep HP relevant and now start to vamp up HP slightly, while making everything x2 weak, and not so strong attacks, thus changing the state of the game once we get to HGSS on or whatever the format in a year or two will be. I think the 'power' creep is receding, but the HP creep is necessary in order to balance it out while not having EVERY card from HGSS completely unplayable for over two years until the rotation where they are the beginning block.

I just hope they don't get as bad as Arcanine...

If it weren't for the otherwise mostly bad attacks, it'd be tempting to scream power creep here...wonder if this'll be a sign of things to come though...

As for the starter Stage 2s, at least they reflect their base stats in the game; icky grass snake has the lowest base HP (75), followed by pseudo-sea unicorn (95) and awesome fire pig (110).

Pokemon is doomed if there's isn't going to be more Poke-powers/poke Bodys. Last three sets have had as many powers/bodys as Platinum/Stormfront/Legends awakened.

I kinda like less Powers/Bodies. Reminds me more the classic sets, and you played more off of attacks/weakness/resistance than Powers.

There is definetly a power creep. I mean lets compare jarooda with torterra dp

arooda - Grass - HP130
Stage 2 - Evolves from Janobii

[C][C] Vine Whip: 40 damage.
[G][G] Leaf Storm: 60 damage. Each of your Grass-type Pokemon recovers 20 HP.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Water (-20)
Retreat: 0

10 less hp but 0 retreat compared to 4. It's first attack does 10 more for one less colorless but doesn't have a potential paralyze. It's second attack is the same as torterras except it's 2 collorless less than torterra.

Well, to be fair, let's compare all three to their DP versions.

Fire Stage 2 - Double weakness compared to +30. Has 4 retreat compared to free retreat. 50 more HP, though. First attack costs :colorless::colorless: more for 50 stable damage compared to flippy 30. 150 for :fire::fire::colorless::colorless: compared to 90 for :fire::fire:. I'd rather have Infernape's attack.

Water Stage 2 - Again, double weakness compared to +30. 10 more HP. Same retreat cost :)colorless::colorless:). 30 dmg + 30 to a bench for CC (easily DCE'd) is much better than 40 to any poke for WC. WWC for 80 (w/ no effects) compared to 70 for WWC w/ a possible 20 to a bench. Not a big difference.

Overall, the BW Grass Stage 2 seems quicker and cheaper to attack than Torterra, but Infernape is the same way compared to the BW Fire Stage 2. Empoleon and the BW Water Stage 2 are similar, but the BW Water Stage 2 does have better attacks while Empoleon has a better weakness.

I don't sense a large amount of power creep, just different pokemon with different speeds. The biggest different is the 2x weakness that is going to make even the 150HP Fire Stage 2 one-shot'able by water pokemon doing 80 (or 70 + 10 spread) You still have to hit the DP starters for 60-110 before weakness to KO them.
