Can ape make a comeback ?

Does the new ape has free retreat?

well, in such a fast-paced metagame, it's just impossible to build up something like the blaziken tech deck in 04 (with ray ex, manetric, delcat + oracle?!)
 
I'll bet it is meant to be Energy cards too. They don't seem to make cards like that nowadays that just say Energy. Just think about Magmortar Lv.X, remember how he got errata to make it say Energy cards?
 
Infernape with a Lightning-type tech, i.e. Electrode, and Lake Boundary could work. Play Lake Boundary to give x2 weakness. Use Electrode to attack Empoleon with Ion Blast 40+60 knocking out both Pokémon. Electrode's Poké-Power attaches itself to Infernape as a Fire Energy. Next turn, Infernape is ready to go.
 
Voltorb/Ape sounds scary, but I'm not sure how stable you could make that to work. You wouldn't need the Lake Boundary though, since Voltorb OHKO's Empoleon and Gatr because of the +30 weakness they already have.
 
I strongly considered Ape for my first City this year.

The problem is that Empoleon variants are EVERYWHERE in every City that I've been to this year. That's hard on a traditional Ape/Delcatty deck.
