Can Gyarados Beat Luxchomp?

This and Cursegar are my two toughest matchups and and I cant seem to get past the whole:

Luxray + Lucario GL = Owned

I tried Donphan but it seems to slow. Any other ideas?

well, any deck can beat any deck, due to bad starts, good starts, and luck. but if you want to say for arguments sake that both decks get a good hand, then yes its still possible. if gyarados is playing luxray x and blissey prime, and you make your opponent waste thier power sprays on claydol, regice and bats, then you have a very good chance imo :thumb:

Donphan or Relicanth are your best options. Donphan shouldn't be slow with BTS, all you need is Phanpy, Donphan and Fighting. With Crobat's on your bench it's even possible to keep it in your hnad for a surprise KO. Relicanth is admittedly easier to get out then Donphan since all you need is a Roseanne's Research. The problem with Relicanth is it's low HP and the vague possibilty they won't have enough tools to return KO. Expert Belt has become common in LuxChomp so if they only have that and one other tool you'll whiff on the KO unless you have a bat drop. It's the same deal for Donphan if they have Expert Belt but he won't be getting return KO'ed like Relicanth will. Also, putting an Expert Belt on Donphan is a lot safer then putting one on Relicanth to get that KO. Wasting Bat drops on the return KO is also a bad idea since you need to save them to get rid of Garchomps.

Short version: Try a 1-1 Donphan again with at least two fighting energy and if you still don't like it try out Relicanth also with at least two fighting energy.

@Kyroid: How on earth would that work? If Toxi is gonna be a surprise, you'll have to retreat?/warp point?/Switch/Warp Energy? And then attach a Psychic to Toxi, as well as having an E gain. GL with that.

No, You have a Gyarados active and have one psychic energy on your bench, I run Poketurn and I run Warp Energy. I attach and knocked it out. Then you use its poke power to return it or just P turn it

I ran PromoCroak in mine too. It's so much easier to get out than Donphan. Cyrus gets you the psy and Gain and then you could Collector/SP Radar/Bebe for the croak. Compared to haveing to rose for the base and energy then get the bebe.

You said it right in the title.

I played a 1-1 donphan line in my gyrados. It was killer.

( keep in mind I'm a complete lucksack and got a t1 donphan two games in a row when I was playing surskit. I wouldn't use it if you aren't at least somewhat of a lucksack.)

Not really sure why you think it's too slow though...

I think a good LuxChomp user will almost always beat a good Gyarados user just based off skill and match-up. If a great Gyarados player plays vs a mediocre LuxChomp player, the great Gyarados player should win. On the overall, Gyarados loses to LuxChomp but, it is a well thought out match by LuxChomp.

BTW for your gengar match-up, don't go trying to chase your opponents gengar, just knock out the spiritomb's and such.

Thats not the problem with Cursegar, the problem is the Double Mime Wall

Everytime I set it up (T3 on average) I had no Supporters to back it up. I'd always draw Poketurns or Poke Rescues

If you run Luxray G lv. X and/or Reversal, go after Lucario GL. If they can't OHKO you, they generally will lose.

Expert Belt and Flash Bite/PlusPower let you trade KOs, and they will not be able to retrieve their level X as long as you can retrieve your Magikarp/Gyarados. The issue is of course getting to that point where you are trading rather than hitting for 90 and allowing them to Poketurn/Healing Breath.

The match-up is not in Gyarados' favor, but if you run enough Belts and damage modifiers-- especially PlusPower, since it is un-Sprayable-- you can win the trade-off war.

You could also get crazy and play a couple of Mesprit and an Azelf MT (along with Uxie obviously, which should already be in the deck).

Post HGSS it's a 50-50 matchup. If Gyarados can pull a prize lead early it will win. Once the game gets to a certain point tho it's whoever can't recover Luxray/Gyarados fast enough.
Donphan is not needed to beat the deck.

luxchomp counters?

ok, going into the second week of states and luxchomp is doing surprisingly well. I'm a gyarados player and luxchomp beats me 99.9% of the time. I'm stuck up on countering it.....donphan prime?,mankey, manectric?,bench shield?, whats your take on luxchomp counters?

Donphan Prime for Luxray. Ambipom works on Chomp if you need it.

Run Luxray and poke blower +, reversals, MT Lumineon, etc. yourself to make sure they come up, but that's standard.

Donphan Prime for both. One energy for a KO on either of them. You should already have BTS... The rest is gravy.

For 1 energy + donphan dosen't = a OHKo on chomp.
