Catcher? Will it ruin the format?

The biggest complaint when it comes to players in the game is that Catcher makes mediocre players better.

Reversal made mediocre players better - if they flipped more heads than their opponent.

Catcher evens things up.

Catcher helps some decks more than others. Ultimately, it helps simple speedy decks more than slower, more complicated, control decks. It makes it hard to win without playing a simple speedy deck. Hence, less variety of playing and dumbed down game

^ Totally unrelated, but how do you go 5-0 and get third? Seems like ur TO doodled the pooch @ that tourney.

But on topic- If a card is introduced that proves to be broken, then P!P will either ban it or rotate early(groans at thought of early rotation AGAIN). The only alternative is to stop buying cardboard "crack" in protest.

It isn't as if this one card will ruin a format like the rules change ruined last format. It wasn't the cards that caused the problems, it was the rule change that made old cards work differently. This card was made with new rules/new sets in mind.Fall BRs might be "War of the Catchers", but we don't know for sure what new sets will bring. It's funny that I haven't seen any "I'm quitting the game cause of this card" posts like we did for other griping/ trolling threads.

Not all decks will do good aginst pokemon catcher. But some decks will do good aginst pokemon catcher' like decks that dont have a lot of high retreat pokemon. Two of my decks that i own will do good aginst pokemon catcher im not sure about the other one.

vaporeon: I am sorry that my comments about Unlimited, early Unlimited, etc. are confusing. I will try to be more clear. I am going to let it cool down now because I am tired and more than a little frustrated in this thread. I think maybe I should just let you all keep panicking. I have plenty of friends who will buy any quitters cheap cards, and anyone who sticks around will quickly learn the truth later.

untitled: When I posted that, I was probably serious. The downside of getting sucked into a debate like this: sheer volume tends to guarantee you say something stupid. I did have an actual point though I pushed it too far and sounded pretty stupid... and your own comment actually talked about it. Struggle. Risk.

It's no big deal. What everyone is trying to get someone to agree with is Catcher favors speed decks. It's true every deck can use it but not every deck can use it of equal terms if that makes since to you. The other issue is the fact that Catcher makes a large part of cards really hard to play. Thing's that need to be on the bench like Ninetails and Dodrio become targets so other decks can't perform like they need to.

Thats what I think everyone is trying to say.

5-0 swiss. Lost in topcut. I GET NERVOUS ;-;

And I don't think it's broken, per se. I just don't like the direction the game is heading. I love this game and to see it get simpler and simpler is really discouraging.

what will ruin the formatt is if cathcer is super hard to get which at the prelease last weekend i saw a ton of them so i think it wont be that hard to get meaning the price on it wont be so high not ruining the formatt since it will be easyer to get.

With the little bit of testing I've done with Catcher. I feel like having 2-3 copys of it in a deck as opposed to 2-3 reversals is HEALTHY for the game (surprise surprise)...but people abusing it with 4 catcher 4 junk arm is annoying and I hate playing games where I have to worry about even setting up. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised with the testing I've done, and I'm still enjoying the game.

CMsvW: Good to hear, and thank you for sharing this since ever little case helps to provide a clearer picture.

In my testing at this point, (And I'm playing, and playing vs. 4 Catcher, four Junk Arm builds) I've noticed a couple things-

  • Its more of a nuisance than a completely knocking out my setup.
There are more important things to use Junk Arm on. Waaaayyy more important
    ZPS is brutal with Catcher
Vileplume is fun. Locking them with 4 more dead cards is absolutely amazing
Lay down 2 of a basic, or don't lay it down at all.
Pichu is amazing to help with my last point

So anyway, my Walmart got EP in today and I pulled a catcher. Now that I'm an expert on catcher, I can officially declare this format ruined. (note, I also live in South Dakota, which is usually one of the last places to put their cards out, so it should be pretty widely available)

Tash: Even if you were correct in stating Pokemon Catcher will ruin the game (we've got what, four threads of disagreement on that for this site alone) it wouldn't be ruined until the set is officially Street Legal on the 31st. ;)
