City Championship Reports

You mean more like can you post your list so a bunch of us won't need inspiration and just copy it?

I would like to see Chris's list too ... and it donesnt mean that I wanna copy it ... like meesie666666 wrote - only for inspiration. I dont see something bad on this idea ...

Not really copying, but what i want to do with it, is closer to your description then to mine :p

I'm not going to be posting the deck list anytime soon as I have a few friends using the list as well, and I don't imagine they'd enjoy it going public. Otherwise I'd be far less hesitant.

I run 2 bebe, would like a 3rd. Helps with Claydol and the Lvl X's, and is also very good against Spiritomb.

And Yoshi, yes, Ruiner in regards to the AWS album ( favorite band, after all )

Gratz on your city-wins :)
Your reports are really nice to read, keep it up ^^
your regional report was the base for my national deck (we played DP-PT) and I'm ended on the 5th place.

one question:
do you still playing the quagsire? I'm unsure about it, maybe a toxi pt or something else is better?

(sorry for my bad english, its not my first language ^^")

Ok, so I decided I would go to the Butler PA tournament and caught a ride out with my friends Drew H and Ajay S. I tried to come up with a different deck to play, not wanting mirror match and anti dialga garchomp hate matchups all day, but I hadn't you know, tested anything else at all, so I ended up just sucking it up and going with the safe choice. Drew went with the same thing, and Ajay went with Blaziken Luxray Garchomp.

Round 1 vs Andrew M with Gyarados

SO I look at my hand: Ambipom, and well, uh, nothing else. No supporters, no energy even. Oh, I had a Baltoy, so I had a lot of outs to "get there". He goes first with Sableye, and gets set up fairly quickly. I draw and pass for 4 turns, not seeing a supporter or even an energy, and he starts taking prizes. I FINALLY topdeck Claydol, and get going, and start to build a metal Dialga, and get Deafen going. He hits me, and I garchomp the damage off. ( I had Expert Belt attached ) and I end up KOing his Gyarados with Deafen, and his bench has no attackers. He does not run Combee, and as a result, he never gets another Gyarados out until I tie the prizes at 2-2 each, and end up winning from there, somehow, after being throttled for the first 6 turns of the game.

1-0

Round 2 vs Heather H with Flygon Machamp

Well, she goes first, with Relicanth, and passes. I open Ambipom, attach an energy gain, an energy, Roseanne for Crobat, use it, Poketurn it, and procede to pull off my first turn 1 win in over a year.

2-0

Round 3 vs Alan with Gengar Machamp

I go first and attach to Crobat. He has a Baltoy, and uses Bucks. He attaches, and passes. I draw, Roseanne, Garchomp C, Bronzong G, Energy Gain Garchomp, swap the energy, and turn 2 KO his Baltoy for the win.

3-0

SO at 3-0, I decide to drop as I am tired, and the field seems like a coinflip and not worth playing in.

Nothing like working up a good sweat in long protracted prize for prize games over an entire tourney. Got to razz you a bit as you seem off to another typical year. Nice Job.

I NEVER get the cheap wins...I'm MORE then happy to take them in bulk :D Generally I consider myself to be a fairly unlucky player, despite posting good results consistently. ( Examples: Losses to Yamato at Worlds 04 were to 2 lopsided junk hands by me...losses in worlds 06 t32 were to a god-start game 1 and time, losses in worlds 08 t32 were to 2 junk hands vs psychic lock, losses in worlds 09 t32 were to palkia lock with flygon where i never got to attack with an evo either game )

Now that the sour grapes are out of the way, I'll let everyone know now: I pretty much plan on 2-0 or 3-0 dropping the rest of the CC season. I'll take a 10-15 point creep every tourney and should sit around 1800 by the end of CC season if it works...if I take a loss, I'll probably keep playing though. I guess it also depends on what the other winning decks look like, if it looks favorable no need to drop. *Waits for the expected flames* :D

Pretty darn good cities run for a "retired player"- I'm just saying......If I won Nats and lost in top 32 four times at Worlds I'd come to the conclusion that I had traveled through a wormhole into an alternate universe..... Those grapes would taste like a 47' Cheval Blanc...
Look forward to your remaining reports - See you at Regionals....

Guys - will you stop asking him about what he plays in his deck? He's already said he doesn't want to give out his list and different people are trying to nit-pick his list until he releases the whole thing.

It's pretty standard the he'd run 3, if not 4 Energy Gain and 1, if not 2 Unown G.

Hey, nothing makes me feel egotistical like post after post wanting to know my deck list! jk

3 e gain, unown g count ranges between 1 and 2. My list hasn't stayed constant between two tournaments yet, and sometimes the list is more of a metagame call then anything else too.

Anyways, I went to the CC in Mansfield, Ohio today, and decided to try my "super consistancy" build with some nice anti Flygon Machamp answers. In the process, I cut Quagsire, hoping to avoid, or beat regardless, Garchomp Luxray Blaziken builds ( Promo Croak, and Garchomp are both very solid in this matchup )

Round 1 vs Stephen M with Flychamp

I get a pretty good start this game, and his is slow, but not bad. I end up doing what I hate doing, which is playing down Galactic HQ. If his list was anything like his gf's from the prior week, he did not run Nidoqueen. Anyways, I Deafen when he has all basics, which forces him to take damage as he evolves into any sort of set up. I am slow at getting Claydol up, but my hand is still quite strong without having it. By the time I do get Baltoy out, he plays Relicanth and finishes it off. I hadn't seen a cyrus up to this point, and had no means of getting back my Baltoy, so this was going to be a lot closer than desired, although I was up 2 prizes early. I continue to take a few prizes and get a Dialga G Lvl X up ( he had no means of threatening a Flygon X at this point unless he had Lucian which I didn't put him on ) and started to work on getting a Garchomp on the bench going. I get down to two prizes to his 4, but I have an Expert belt on my benched Bronzong that I had to play to get an extra use out of it's Power. ( I had already killed Relicanth, and he had NM'd it back once, and I killed it a second time, so I felt it was a safe gamble: Plus, if he got it back, I threatened the Remove Lost KO on Relicanth, putting me at 1 prize, and allowing me to use Garchomp to secure the last one. He makes a misplay with Flygon Lvl X ( Didn't see the fact Upper didn't work with the Lvl X when he tried to Sandwall ) and later again when he uses Machamp Lvl X to swing into my tanked Dialga, forgetting his power was shut off. Neither of these mattered as I had the garchomp KO exchange mapped out to give me the inevitable win barring some crazy card inclusions in his list, but they definitely eased up the pressure some.

1-0

Round 2 vs Rich O with Mirror Match

I start with Garchomp C active, and he opens with Toxicroak G. He goes first, and attaches. I go, E Gain, attach, and do 30. (I Cyrus'd for an SP Radar and a Roseanne ) and he goes and attaches to a benched Dialga, and attacks me for 20 with a E Gain. He played no supporter, and I had a Spray in my hand. I go, and try to get greedy with my Roseanne taking Baltoy and Crobat G to Earthquake KO his Toxicroak after Lvl'ing up my Garchomo ( didn't want to get taken out by Second Strike ) opposed to getting a 3rd SP Pokemon for a Spray. He topdecks Luxury Ball, and of course Uxies for 6. He Expert Belts Dialga, and starts to Deafen. Garchomp ends up sniping his Baltoy the next turn after I Bebe for Claydol and get a sour Cosmic Power, preventing me from getting any other SP Pokemon ( I attach a metal to Crobat to Bronzong away later ) I had no desire to snipe Baltoy here, as I did NOT want to lose Garchomp, but due to my Cosmic miss, I really didn't have a decent backup plan, so I hoped to cut off his draw ( most lists run 1-1 claydol, and he'd already used his Uxie ) I end up Roseanne'ing next turn to get Bronzong and Dialga, and get going from there. I sacrifice a prize, and then he uses his Garchomp C X to snipe my Crobat and it's metal. He uses a good number of Poketurns early ( I spray'd the Bronzong attempt to move his energy to Garchomp...I expected him to snipe Baltoy, but he didn't) This leads to him using an Expert Belt'd Dialga to Deafen me, and I deafen him back ( far less sucessfully ) and we are both tied at 4 prizes. He has a full bench, and mine isn't as loaded, and we both go to work on trying to get a Garchomp C Lvl X up, to snipe the other guy's Garchomp. He wiffs pretty bad on getting energy since I cut off his draw, but I wiff a drop too. I had 4 energy on an Unown G'd Dialga G Lvl X tho, and started to slowly move those to Garchomp C, where as he didn't have more then 2 in play total. We are stuck in Deafen stalemate, and time is called on my turn where I snipe his Garchomp for the win. I had at least an extra turn before he could have taken a prize, and once his Garchomp fell, there wasn't really a way for him to win either.

2-0

Well, I looked at the tables next to me, and saw 2-3 decks with Infernape 4 Lvl X, 2-3 more with Blaziken, a good Gengar build, and 2 Flychamps. The fire scared me since I cut Quagsire, and the other matchups weren't BAD but were still challenging to play, so I decided to drop and take my 12ish points. I would have stayed in if I had Quagsire still, but alas, I did not.I should sit around 1750 by the end of this CC though, hopefully.

Hmm your PM-Box is full, so i post it here..

Do you think Quagsire is a good counter against Blaziken?
I think, that good players would just use Vapor kick to not get knocked out their Blaziken... And it is still dangerous for Dialga even with 1-2 Sp. Metals on it. And to drop Quagsire the turn your Dialga was KOed is imo a bad idea because the galactic switch will just be power sprayed then.

I was just wondering, why Quagsire..

why quagsire? because with an expert belt, its OHKOing Blaziken or Infernape regardless of what they do. Its also untouchable on the bench. The idea isn't to use it with Energy Gain if you don't have to. Your not really using Dialga in the matchup anyways. You are, on the other hand, using Garchomp and Toxicroak, and once you get it up and running, Quagsire. Once it gets "set up" your able to take away their fire type attacker entirely as an option. Quagsire is also immune to Garchomp snipes, and is resistant to luxray. If you don't think those factors are relevant towards its use in the matchup, I'm not sure what else I can do to convince you. Blaze Lux Chomp vs Dialga Chomp is almost a mirror match in terms of positioning and a war of attrition.

Anyways, I went to the Pittsburgh PA tournament today, and I switched it up and used Gengar.

Round 1 vs Alan E with SP Mightyena Mewtwo Lvl X

This deck used Skuntank to poison me, and do bad things as a result. Unfortunately, it also had little to no answer for an Expert Belted Curse Gengar hit and running for 80. The longer the game went the farther I pulled ahead and unfortunately for him, it was just one of those matchups where there much he can do due to a matchup miss-match.

1-0

Round 2 vs Rob T with Giratina

Rob was new to tournaments, as were a lot of the players who showed up to this tournament. His deck wasn't really geared to keep up with tournament level decks, and as a result couldn't compete with the curse Gengar either, which ran through his Pokemon fairly quickly. Afterwards, we got a chance to discuss some deck theory and go over what is needed to make a deck competitive, so I'm looking forward to seeing how his next tournament goes. It was fun getting a chance to chat deck ideas with him.

2-0

Round 3 vs Joey Gannon with Dialga Garchomp

His start was really weak, and a few turns behind my spiritomb open. I felt good about this matchup as it is normally quite close, but I feel I had an edge due to the fact I know Dialga Chomp so well that I can give myself an edge vs it. I get my Curse Gengar going, and he breaks Deafen to allow me to drop an Expert Belt and start really applying the damage. Once I take out his Dialga with a metal on it and leave him energy-less, I pulled away. He made a misplay thinking a card was prized when it was in fact not, which gave me more leeway, but this is really not a matchup where either player can get a subpar start and hope to stay in it.

3-0

Round 4 vs Steve with Darkrai Sharpedo Skuntank

I should have a fairly large edge here, if it wasn't for the fact his entire deck resisted mine and had type advantage on Gengar. Regardless, I sac my Spiritomb and get Curse Gengar up and methodically start to put damage on his field while I get Nidoqueen up and get my bench healed after each hit and run. He drops a Snowpoint Temple which I run no counter to, and it takes forever to eat through resistant +20 HP basics, and the game goes to time as I can't draw into any of my Expert Belts until the very end ( I had a 2-3 prize lead most of the game, but he got a key heads on Life Herb and kept switching between Pokemon. It wasn't really "close" but it took a really long time for either of us to accomplish much )

4-0

At this point I debate dropping, as the other 4-0 is also a gengar. I have something I feel gives me a mirror match edge, and his rating was pretty high so a loss wouldn't be too crippling, so I decide to stay in.

Round 5 vs Jacob R with Gengar

We both get subpar starts, and joke about how bad our hands are while the judge sets up the Seniors top cut. He of course, goes first, and topdecks a Call Energy. I procede to topdeck a Roseanne, so its even, and his start is slower than mine since he opened Mewtwo and had to burn two energy drops retreating it ( plus had it hogging a bench spot all game ) and I was two turns ahead in getting Curse-gar online, and this gave me a significant prize lead. I opted NOT to drop an Expert Belt on it, instead letting him snipe it for 60 with Shadow Room before dropping my 2nd Unown G on it ( He only ran 1 to my 2 ) and he got out Nidoqueen 2-3 turns before me ( we both got it out very late ) and I was up 3 prizes at this point. I end up sniping off Claydols, and eventually win by 3 prizes in the end, shockingly ignoring the tempting Expert Belted Gengar on his bench for easier prizes. ( my late game Cosmics were laughably bad. Like 5 straight cosmic for 3 netted a combination of Spiritombs, Gastlys, and Expert Belts )

5-0

SO I decide to drop at 5-0, as I knew my girlfriend had gone 4-1, but had taken a round 1 loss, and would likely finish 5th. Plus I don't want to risk taking the loss even though I felt confident in my top cut matchups. I wish I had run an Unown Q badly, but I couldn't get one before the tournament and there was limited space ( the venue was tiny ) so I rushed to complete registration opposed to trying to hunt one down.
