Can someone explain the Claydol ex joke and what it was about?

Claydol ex was and is a terrible card. Years ago, a few players had the idea to trick the Pokemon community at large into thinking it was the focus of a potent secret deck. Their plan worked. It was pretty amusing.

Similar in concept, but earlier in execution was T2 Wiscash.

Though it was less about messing up the metagame for Nats and more about having an inside joke about a bad deck using bad cards.

A week or two before nats some top / poplular players made their trade threads to asking for Claydol ex.

Players took noticed and tried to figure out how to make it work....eventually it became "In demand" and people all over the forum were advertising having it for trade or wanting it.
