Clefable and double evolution

This came up last weekend

Player has two Clefables on the bench.

He/she plays a Squirtle from their hand to the bench, then flips heads for moon guidance.
Evolving their Squirtle into Wartortle.

After evolving He/She plays the other moon guidance and flips heads again. Evolving to Blastoice.

Now their opp. is complaining that this is not allowed because Squirtle was just played.

I let them know that the evolving is coming from the ability and it overrules the standard evolution rule.

I believe I was correct, but I want to double check.

Can they evolve twice with moon guidance?

You are correct. Effects get around the timing rules for evolution.
That's why Rare Candy has to have so much text on it to restrict what and when it can be used. If it didn't have all that text, it could ignore the timing rules too.
