Coin Flips

People are always complaining that they get unlucky on flips where ever you go.

This really annoys me as it's never 'oh, I got lucky on my flips.' It's always 'oh, I got unlucky on my flips.' A bit of a coincidence if you ask me.

So stop complaining, there's luck in everything. Doesn't mean you have to whine abot it. Even in chess, whoever goes 1st/2nd might have an advantage. The amount of times you see on reports, Cyrus's Initiative. . . Double tails, I'm so unlucky etc because the thing is, it'd be wierd if stuff like this never happened and you always got 1 heads and 1 tails on Initiative.

If you hate the luck involved, don't play.

Stop using luck as a wall to hide behind when you lose a game too. Unless it's really horrible luck, just accept the loss and move on.

I'm sorry, but I just had to do this.

What's "really horrible luck"? A tails on SSU? Double tails on Initiative? 4 Karps and a Azelf prized? Regice and 6 energies?

I got 6 straight tails yesterday (4 SSUs, 2 Blowers) and I was a bit bummed, but hey, it's a part of the game.

I had 2 Karps prized the other day, which is pretty unlikely and generally very bad for GDos anyway.

Hey guess what? I won. Hey guess what? I would have won if I had 3 karps prized too.

Screw luck, play the game.

What I don't like is that people complain about luck, after running an inconsistent deck or one full of Super Scoop Ups and other flip cards.

It's not necessarily bad to run flip cards, but if you do, you accept they fail sometimes.

Everyone has won and lost on a flip and moaning about it gets you nothing but a rep for being a sore loser.

A bit of a coincidence if you ask me.
Sorry. Had to be done.

Anyway, I agree.
It's almost like they completely forget about the part where it can fail.
And using luck as an excuse to say 'I lost' 'cause of 2 tails' is quite pathetic.
Just accept you don't have luck of the Irish and like others had said - just play the game!

What had to be done? I don't understand.

Also, if they get 2 heads they don't then go 'I got so lucky!' They just continue with their report. If they're going to whine about being unlucky, show both sides of the story. This is the main reason why I hate reading reports.

The poor sports are the ones who whine about it. Yes, I've lost on coin flips, my opponent's have known it, but I don't complain about it afterward. (Well, unless I know the person well and he/she knows that I'm joking)

So people saying that they lost on a coinflip/coinflips is fine, IMO, it's when they don't give credit to the other person or whine about it.

Personally, I feel that coin flips are a part of the card's balance. Fainting Spell would be ridiculously broken if it didn't require coin flips... losing or winning based on that coin flip is just part of how the card was made, and it's part of the balance of the deck. If I am running Gengar SF, I better accept that some games I will lose just because of coin flips - and I can't count on Fainting Spell saving me.

(Which is part of why I don't like running Gengar.)

You know, whenever I open threads up I always think "oh I got unlucky opening this thread" not "oh I got lucky with this thread!"

Your thread followed suit.

...

I consider myself lucky with coin flips. I mean, I used to run Speed Stadium and it annoyed Jaeger since he would explain how it wasn't really a good idea, then I'd average 2-3 draw per turn while my opponent would get the standard draw every other turn.

Keep in mind I said average: my record was 13 drawn in one turn. XD

What's bad luck on coin flips?

Zero damage with Neo Genesis Sneasel.

Three times in a row.

In the same battle.

With a full bench.

Happened to me at least twice.

Enjoy parsing through that one ^_^

Ok, fair enough you can explain why you lost.

But when people keep whining/talking about it, and don't do the same if they get lucky instead. . . Yeah that's what I hate.

The part where I 'bolded' COIN out of coincidence.
Geddit? Anyway, you made a really good point there I completely forgot about: "if they get 2 heads they don't then go 'I got so lucky!'"
That is really true. My friend doesn't do that. At school today, he need a bat or Poké Turn to win the game. Last card he drew with setup was a Poké Turn. He admitted he only won from luck and it was a lucky win.

Hmh Tails with flippy cards are really good to test your skills....

If somebody doesn't understand that or doesn't want this to be true, look at my report from Prague European Cup.... or even better Con Le's Report from Worlds.

-Filipp.

You know what's worse? People whining about people whining.

Oh, I thought you meant I'd spelt it wrong. Sorry lol

I prized 4 Gligars and started with Azelf one time :d

All moaning aside, this game will always have luck involved. However, I wish more methods were implemented to reduce the luck factor. I was a big fan of cards like Poke Drawer, Blower, and Healer. They all had very powerful effects when you played 2 at time. This effect could have been replaced with a coin flip (similarities are seen between Drawer and Victory Medal, Blower and Pokemon Reversal, and Healer and Life Herb), but they were created with a less luck-oriented method of activation. I would love to see more innovative ideas like these in order to reduce the luck factor.

I'm afraid that we're moving in the wrong direction, though. The upcoming rule change allowing players to use all T/S/S on the first turn makes the opening coin flip to decide who goes first a huge luck factor. It will have a larger role in deciding the winner than it already does.
