Colorado State Championship Report
March 10th, 2007

I wake up around 6:30 and make myself a little cereal before getting ready to go. I get picked up by my friend (who is attending his first POP event ever) around 7:00 and we hit the road. We have about an hour and a half drive to the tourney location. After briefly stopping by my house, we arrive at the tournament at about 9:00 and get in the tremendously long registration line. After waiting in that line for what seemed like forever, my friend and I were only left with about 15 minutes to swap out sleeves on our decks and get in the deck-check line. Fortunately, we were able to make the deck-check deadline, and got our decks checked. I chose to play my version of Flygon  ex with Eeveelutions. My friend, on the other hand, played a rogue deck that him and I constructed about week prior to the event.
First round pairings are posted and my friend is given a BYE.

ROUND 1:
Me: vs. Salamence d, Magcargo, Blaziken (firestarter)
I get a slow start, and we both build up our playing area. Eventually I get a Flygon ready and attack his Sally that he has loaded with energy. I knock it out, making his lose some of his precious energy. However, he is able to knockout my Flygon, but not before I have another on the bench ready to go. I played a Jolteon ex down, followed by a Professor Elm’s to get an Espeon ex to lay down, devolving his Magcargo. I knockout another one of his Sallys, along with his Slugma, therefore shutting and slowing him down. My Flygon cleans up the rest.

Friend: Bye

Me: 1-0
Friend: 1-0

ROUND 2:

Me: vs. Deoxys ex
I start out delta drawing several turns, and got setup. His use of Deoxy’s Psychic Shield attack slowed my Flygons down, but I made nice use of my two Umbreon exs, and was able to pull out alternate Deoxi and knock those out, giving me 4 prizes. His last Deoxys out was the one with Psychic Shield, so I was force to send out my regular Flygon d for the knockout of Deoxys. He had only taken 1 prize during the match.

Friend: vs. Feraligatr d, Rayquaza d ex, Kabutops d, Skarmory ex, Magneton, Nidoqueen
He deals himself one mulligan, then gets a redraw with 2 Rayquaza d ex, 1 Rayquaza ex DX. He copycats and gets some needed energy, then Special Circuits the Skarmory for 2 turn, 2 prizes. His opponent get a Gatr with scramble. However, he plays lots of warp points and gets his Rayquaza ex DX setup and dishes out the damage to everyone, KO, KO, KO.

Me: 2-0
Friend: 2-0

ROUND 3:

Me: vs. Tyranitar ex UF, Carvanha (HP and PK)
I get a lousy Holon’s Voltorb to start, then get some delta draws going (2 small ones). His Ttar ex has psychic resistance, and he KO’s a Flygon. I have nothing left, but 5 of my prizes.

Friend:
vs. Flygon d ex, Nidoqueen d, Milotic d
He starts out with a mulligan, but is able to get some prizes. Then, his opponent is able to get 5 prizes in one turn, due to Sand Damages and Psychic Pulses.

Me: 2-1
Friend: 2-1

ROUND 4:
Me: vs. Bandoom
I started with an Eevee d, and was able to get it to an Umbreon ex. Made good use of my resistance and his weakness. I later Elmed for a second Umbreon ex, and picked away at Houndoom ftw.

Friend: vs. Flymence with Ninetales (safeguard)
He gets a good start. His first few draws are Skitty and energies. He Special Circuits a few times for 30 each. His opponent made good use of the Ninetales and continuously did 50 damage a turn. He used warp points to send the Ninetales back, but it kept returning. He lost with 3 prizes left.

Me: 3-1
Friend: 2-2

ROUND 5:
Me: vs. Metagross (ex PK and DX), Magcargo
I get a good start with a castform, and am able to get some good delta draws. It turns out that he had 3 of his Beldums prized. I’m able to KO his Magcargo, followed by his Beldum, and then a Slugma ftw.

Friend: vs. Dragonite d ex, Altaria (ex DF and DX), Chimecho d
He begins sniping with Rayquaza d ex for 30 each time. Then he begins loading more energy onto his active, and using Sky-High Claws on a Dragonite (that already had 80) for a prize. He gets a delcatty on the bench, and does a Constrain to have himself discard 4 and his opponent 5. He played the colorless Rayquaza ex DX down, transferred 6 energies on, attached the 7th, warp pointed him out. KOed a Chimecho, then a damaged Dragonite, then had to attach an 8th energy to KO another Dragonite ftw.

Me: 4-1
Friend: 3-2

ROUND 6:
Me: vs. Nidoqueen d, Magcargo, Machamp
I utilize his decks psychic weakness and begin knocking things out. His two Magcargos were both prized. I end up getting way ahead on prizes (1 left) before he decides to concede.

Friend:
vs. Dustox ex
He begins with 2 mulligans. His opponent quickly got 3 Dustox setup, and the Safequard provided no hope. A swift loss.

Me: 5-1
Friend: 3-3

I end up making the top 8 cut, with my place being 5th.
The top 8 rearrange their decks and get them checked again.

ROUND 7: vs. Raichu d, Lickitung d, Kingler d with tools
Game 1:
We both get setup, however my powers and bodies get shut off fast, we slowly pick at each other, but with my powers and bodies, my deck is slowed to a crawl and he takes the win.
Game 2:
An exact repeat of the first game. Decent starts, but I get slowed down due to my power and bodies getting shut off. I am able to play a couple windstorms, but the tools and stadiums just come back. Another loss for me.

Overall Records:
Me: 5-3
Friend: 3-3

After losing my playoff match, I place somewhere between 5th-8th and take my 4 booster prize, lol.

PROPS:

-Me, for finally making a top 8 cut after some previously horrible tournament records.
-My friend, for attending his first POP event and breaking even with a week-old rogue deck
-The TOs, for setting up a nice Pizza Hut order during the lunch break, it hit the spot!
-All of my opponents, for their fair play
-Everyone who was there, for such a good time

SLOPS:
-Having to resleeve my deck with only minutes remaining before the deck-check deadline
-The unwelcoming long registration line

That's cool man. I was wondering when somebody might post their report from Colorado. I had Flygon deck and had to face the T-Tar too. Intense.

Wow awesome report with great details too I might add. Reminds me of some of my old reports. Great showing too placing 5th not too shabby.

GJ Nick! Flygon was the deck to play IMO, but then again, Jared's Shiftry matched up well against the Flygon meta. I like the Eeveelution version of Flygon best, tho it's very weak against Cessation Crystal decks.

BTW, there's a bunch of us going to UT for MTW Regionals. You're welcome to join the convoy.
