Combee's Honey and KO upon entering play

Suppose this Combee would be knocked out immediately upon entering play (say, SV Metagross is in play, Absol Prime is the opponent's active, and the opponent used Skarmory FB's Silver Feather attack during the last turn). Would Combee's Honey still be able to retrieve a basic from the discard pile, or does Combee have to stay in play for the ability to activate?
