Death Note dub

OMG, this is my new favorite anime. I am amazed at how good the dub is when you think about it. (I mean look at One Piece, Naruto, ect.)

I saw the first ~10 episodes in Japanese a while back (they cut me off when You-tube got into law trouble with copyrights) and now that the dub is on, I can't wait to finish the series (I never felt like downloading it).

I think the scene where Light and Ryuk met, not to mention the subsequent scenes, were actually done very well. Light's overall tone and the delivery of his lines were perfect. It was far more impactful than anything requiring subtitles could be.
 
For the record, well written and well typesetted subtitles do not subtract from the impact of a line (unless, y'know, you have it muted for some reason). Tengen Toppa "WHO DO YOU THINK I AM!?" Gurren Lagann. That's all I'm saying.
 
They do because they add an extra layer to what you have to interpret. When you hear an impactful line in English, you're getting the tone and meaning all at once. When you read it with subtitles, you hear the tone in a language you can't understand, and have to attach it to the meaning of the words you're reading.

Just saying.
 
Even so, it's a rather minute difference. As long as the subtitles are easily seen (with respect to size, font, and colors) and are not a big wall of text, reading them is practically effortless for anyone with a high school and above reading level.

Of course, I might not should be arguing this since I actually have begun to understand what is being said little by little and may depend less on subtitles than most people.

This may be true, but I'll have to continue to respectfully disagree with you here, as I believe that the additional layer of communication of having the line be in a language you understand versus one you don't actually has quite a strong effect.

On the upside, this means I won't keep arguing.
 
I watched it every saturday since its deubt on [AS] a couple weeks ago. The kid is definitely psychotic but just from these few episodes with L and Light playing cat and mouse it seems like a very impressive show. The makers pulled out all the stops and the voices sound so natural it almost makes up for what Viz did to One Piece...
 
They should've just done like Tokyo Mew Mew and had the dub and animé use totally seperate translations. The dub was worthy of the early 90s, but the manga was passable, aside from some odd naming choices (I think they went with Kisshu being "Kish" instead of just, like, "Quiche", for example).
