Hello,

I want to build some decks to play with friends. We want to collect the needed cards together and we are looking for like 3 decks to play with eachother.
We have some rules that we only want to use cards from the base, jungle and fossil set and are a bit limited in our budget to collect our cards. So Charizard is off limit and we think it is hard to collect four Blastoises for example.

We started with a deck of cards we already have and are looking to improve this deck.
The deck list:
1x Hitmonchan
1x Hitmonlee
2x Machop
1x Machoke
1x Matchamp
3x Rhyhorn
3x Rhydon
2x Cubone
2x Marrowak (we already found out that this line is not that succesfull)
1x Geodude
1x Graveler
1x Golem
1x Doduo
1x Dodrio
1x Breeder
1x Item Finder
1x Defender
1x Super Energy Removal
2x Switch
2x Pokeball
3x Computer Search
3x Gust of Wind
4x Energy Removal
4x Bill
3x Oak
2x Energy Retrieval
11x Fighting Energy
1x Double Colourless Energy

Ofcourse I see some points for impovement. I'd like to play with more energy cards, but at the moment this is all I have. I would also like to add at least a Matchamp line and 2 or 3 Hitmonchans and drop the Marrowak as I rarely play it. Do any of you have other ideas to improve this deck?

Since I posted this we have bought some cards to add to our list to make our decks. We are probably thinking about a fighting deck with 4 Matchamp lines (maybe lose one or two Machokes if we get to find 3 extra breeders) a Hitmonchan and two Scythers and further approximately the same as above. We got ourselfs 4 Matchamps, 2 Scythers, a Ditto, a Machoke, 4 Kangaskhans, 3 Clefables and a Blastoise (it could be bought relatively cheaply, so we just got it and save it for when we can get another 3 to make a Raindance deck). Any thoughts about this deck and possible improvements given the cards we now own?

We made some changes and think this deck is almost as good as it gets. We now have:
3x Machop
2x Machoke
3x Matchamp
1x Hitmonchan
1x Hitmonlee
1x Doduo
1x Dodrio (The friends love its poke-power and think it's revenge attack is pretty strong)
2x Scyther
3x Kangaskhan
4x Bill
4x Gust of Wind
3x Energy Removal
3x Computer Search
3x Item Finder
4x Pluspower
2x Oak
2x Switch
2x Energy Retrieval
1x PokeBall
1x Pokemon Breeder
1x Super Energy Removal
12x Fighting Energy
1x DCE

I'd like to have some more energies and lose the Dodrio line and try to fit in 3 more Hitmonchans maybe.

first of all, i think u need to know which type of deck you want to make.

In general, oldfags decks used to (and use to) have an archetype. Easy architecture could be 20/20/20 in pokemon, trainer and energy. Competitive decks, in most cases, reduces ammount of pokemon card and increase trainer cards, to get extra speed of drawing card or looking-in-deck cards.

Now, as advice, if u play all-basics (as haymaker) choose the bests ones, and u have to avoid playing a solo pokemon card (especially if its a weak basic) like doduo o pidgey, etc.
Also, do not play 1/1/1 set basic/stage 1 /stage2 in a same deck, like x1 geodude x1 graveler and x1 golem because they are big chances u never got golem in that game. If u want a golem deck, de ideal must be 4/2/4 with 3 to 4 pokemon trader and/or 3 to 4 pokemon breeder.

If u have entire playsets of trainer cards, u dont need lots of item finder as well. first select an strategy, then a shorter ammount and kind of pokemons in order we can give you some functional deck list!

good set could be:

x4 machop
x2 machoke
x4 machamp
x4 hitmonchan

x4 bill
x4 energy removal
x3 computer search
x2 pokemon breeder
x3 professor oak
x2 switch
x2 gust of wind
x2 pokemon trader
x2 item finder
x2 nightly garbage run

x 20 fighting energy

There u got a balanced an versatile deck:

good disrupting (removal and GOW)
good drawig card (bill and oak)
good look- into- deck (cpus and trader)
good recycing (finder, nightlys)
good attack (hitmonchan)
good survival (machamp)
good atack speed (machop and hitmonchan 20 damage with only 1 :fighting:)

Your recent list is solid, I would try and fit in an extra Nightly Garbage Run and a Switch and take out energy or some stage 1 pokemon. You could also play more pokemon breeder.

Thanks for the help. I understand that the last list has some improvement points, mostly I think because we are still limited in cards. We don't have more Breeders and Traders and such. One thing, the Nightly garbage run isn't allowed in our format. It is Base, jungle and fossil only, so no Rocket cards.

Btw, does anyone know some sites with good prices for these cards inside the EU? So I dont have to pay additional fees.

ouuuu that hurts....

Nighly garbage run was the first official "recycling" cards made, then improved by town volunteers... u can play slowpoke or promo mewtwo but ofc, its not the same.

The problem is: good decks MUST have powerful trainers, and professor oak is one of the most powerful trainer ever made, but sometimes it can be a double edge weapoon because u can deck out yourself, so recycle cards are requiered if u play many oaks, cpus and finders.

Actually, u can play "Recycle" from fossil set but ofc, nightly or finder are massively better.

From shopping, u can visit T&T, maybe jussssst a little over prizer only in some rare cards, or 1st edition; but they have enormous stock. and quite cheap shipping.

T&T is American right? So I have to pay fees whenever I would spend more than €22 (inc. shipping), which means I cant buy too much and it would make the shipping significantly more expensive.

The best way to make your deck better in Base Set - Fossil format is to add Psyduck (Fossil) and Psychic Energy.

We made a new deck to compete with the Machamp deck. It's pretty cool, ony thing is that Wigglytuff stands no chance, so we should drop that one if we play the Machamp deck. Here is the list we now have:
3x Abra
3x Kadabra
3x Alakazam
2x Scyther
3x Kangaskhan
2x Ditto
2x Jigglypuff
2x Wigglytuff
4x Pokecenter
4x Bill
4x Energy removal
4x Gust of wind
4x Computer search
3x Item finder
2x Energy retrieval
3x Oak
1x Switch
1x Pokemon breeder
1x Imposter Oak(really cool when the opponent doesnt have much cards left and you got Alakazam out)
12x Psychic Energy
4x Double Colorless Energy (really annoying when the opponent plays energy removal..)

So of course we want to drop Wigglytuff and probably take two more Scythers or Dittos and add an Alakazam line (we already have it, but didnt use it to try the other cards). Any suggestions on this deck? It seems to lose most of the time, any ideas to turn that arround?
