There is almost an entirely original and exclusive fantasy metagame, tier system, etc. that seems to exist just within the confines of the deck forum on virtually any site that offers one (here, Pojo, Pokebeach), where everything is so distorted and based on conjecture/best case scenarios/improbabilities/egos/hypothetical this-and-that and so forth that if you actually take a step back and really LOOK at it all in the clear light of day, you are able to just shake your head and realize the majority of these people either don't play competitively, don't know half of what they're talking about, never top cut if they do play in legit tournaments, operate within an isolated little bubble, or a combination of these. I would LOVE to see someone who has won Worlds or been a consistent topcutter there or at Nationals come by the deck forum and actually share with a lot of these people how far removed they really are from reality. There's no better way to cut through the nonsense than with experiential truth. It's especially funny how almost none of the top ranked/most consistent players actually ever visit the deck forum at all and still come out on top time and again at all the biggest events. (And yes I know there are other boards where the "elite" gather to avoid the kind of nonsense that can bog down a public board like this such as TheTopCut.com, and I know there are also just plenty of players who are lucky enough to live in areas where there are a ton of great players right among them and that's where they get all the help they need, plus they don't like spilling big ideas to the masses which I totally understand.) Their absence should serve as an alert to people though. Random Johnny who claims his Raichu MD deck has at worst a 60/40 match-up against everything does not rule the scene-- actual good players, however absent they may be on the Gym, do.
Something else I actually really loathe is the popularity of writing match-ups for decks. While when done correctly and from a truly tested and unbiased angle it can be very informative and a precursor to good discussion, I almost NEVER see anyone putting their deck at lower than 50-50 versus anything, no matter what the deck is they've posted or what the decks are they're writing match-ups for. It's human nature to want to conceal potential weaknesses and envision things in a light favorable for oneself, but the whole "arbitrarily assigning odds to matches based largely on things other than actual hard evidence" just makes me sick and takes the whole point of even trying to assess a deck's performance abilities against the field down to moot. How does someone come up with a ratio like 85/15 anyway? It's just something people churn out without even attempting to invite their brain into the process, much less actual playtesting. Writing match-ups for decks that HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN PLAYED IN ANY EVENTS YET is particularly fool-hardy and irksome.
All that being said, there are still a good number of people who legitimately do use the resources offered by this site for the right reasons, and I always love checking out what respectable, level-headed, non-pretentious individuals cook up. They're just the diamonds in the rough.
