Diamond/Pearl or Force of the Breaker

I'm just getting into Pokemon again, and I saw that the new Diamond/Pearl packs are coming out soon. i also just went to a yugioh pre-release this weekend for the new Force fo the Breaker pack. i know that with yu-gi-oh, almost every new pack changes the way you have to play the game, and that there's not just like 3 or 4 decks that all the pros play with. i was wondering if it's similar with pokemon, where every new release changes the game, or if it would be worth it to just get some older packs now and build my deck up instead of waiting for Diamond/Pearl. what would you suggest i do with my money for pokemon?

With Pokemon, youre best getting a starter deck and learning the new updated rules, and a few boosters to customize the starter. Once you have the basics downpat, start looking into building simple combos. From there, once youre used to that, you can probably start on the advanced stuff. Just look at your cards and compare them with others. You will discover many things while playing. I know, I have had many epiphanic moments duting my matches, and seen combos I never knew existed in the deck. The more you play, the better you get :)

The game has seemed to change every 2-3 sets, and the sets arent released as frequently as YGO, so you have time to get to know things, and get prepared for anything gamebreaking.

DP will change the game drastically. It changes turn 1, and adds different trainer types, and other stuff like that.

There is a front page thread that goes over the new rulings and such.

If you are buying packs, anything above Legend Maker is safe to buy. There is some discussion on what sets are going to be rotated after worlds, and if previous years are any example, it could be anywhere between 3, 4, or even 5 sets this year. 3 would leave Delta Species in the format, with Holon Transceiver and the Holon Engine left in the game. (it's used in almost every deck, so get 4 Holon Transceiver immediately)

DP is also a good bet for your money. The cards will be the newest, and will stay in the format for the longest time. They also have the biggest chance of breaking the format right now.

Hope that helps!

Actually sets ARE realeased exactly at the same time mostly, both YGO and Pokemon release 4 sets a year, not to mention YGO hadnt seen a decent expansion before force of the breaker, thats the main difference, all pokemon exoansions have some cards that could make a worthwhikle deck, while ygo just add cards to current cookie cutters, of course with the exception of crystal beasts and six samurai, but aside from that, destiny heroes and elemental heroes have been the only "new" deck type to hit the game in almost 3 years.

What I especially love of pokemon is how almost every expansion boasts a pokemon in which you can base a competitive level deck, even deoxys, which is considered by many one of the less interesting exoansions has the star pokemon most people carried on their decks for more than a year :p

Keep sending the sets, we love em!

It largely depends on how you want to get into the game.

If you have no idea what you want to play, but feel like you're a pretty decent player and deckbuilder, I'd go with a booster box of Delta Species for the broken Trainers, Dragon Frontiers for the broken stage 2 ex's, and Diamond and Pearl because that set will give you some good tradeables.

If you have little to no idea how to even play the game, go with the two starter decks idea. The ones from Legend Maker and Power Keepers are probably the best that you can get right now.

If you know exactly what you want to play, go for singles and leech basic energy off somebody else if you don't already have them.

Either way, good luck!

First things first...

GO TO LEAGUE.

It's a good place to learn the rules, and maybe there you can find someone who is willing to loan you a deck for the big tournaments.

Once you have a good feel for the game rules and how to play, start to build your own deck.

thanks for all the great help everyone, i didn't realize how often pokemon changes. i think what's good with ygo (and hopefully pokemon) is that it doesn't change drastically a lot because theres alot of different winning strategys. people play with all different decks i think, and not just one or two. hopefully diamond and pearl will do that, where youll see alot of different decks beating other ones. i'll def check out league to, everyones suggesting that to me
