Dillon M. Top 8 with Gengar (masters)

Hi everyone,

I flew out from Oregon with my friend Jason and we arrived in St. Louis on Thursday after 10 hours of travel. I had just gotten enough points to play in the Professor Cup, so I spent Thursday night getting ready for it. I drafted pretty well, but I just bombed in the tournament going 3-3. Oh well, I guess I got all my misplays, bad luck, and just plain sucking-at-the-game out of the way so I could do well on Saturday. Friday night I met up with Ross C. and later Thomas and some players from Nevada to test. I knew I was playing Gengar, but I was still deciding between Dusknoir (which I won a couple of BRs with) or Nidoqueen, which I hadn’t tested but knew would be better against SP decks. I decided to go with speed and consistency over creativity and went with a 1-0-1 Nidoqueen line. That way I also had room for BTS and Poketurn. I filled out my new list before I even played a single game with it, deciding more sleep would be better than more testing.

So here’s my report for the tournament. I’ve tried to keep it as short as possible, sorry if it gets a little long winded. And sorry if I forgot your name.

Round 1 vs. Leafeon/Sceptile/Shaymin

This was actually one of my hardest games all day. I had a terrible start with Unown G and Azelf, and he drew three prizes with Shaymin lv. X before I got a Gengar out. I missed two fainting spell flips, but I came back drawing four prizes with Nidoqueen. 1-0

Round 2 vs. Drew Holton w DPL

He got a pretty bad start, and I Pitch Dark’d his setup and used Looker to get rid of his hand when I got out Gengar. I stayed a prize ahead pretty much the whole game. 2-0

Round 3 vs. Flygon/Weavile

I got a T1 Gengar and KO’d his Baltoy before he could get Claydol out. I was two prizes ahead before he recovered and got set up. I KO’d Weavile, Claydol, and Uxie with Gengar, but missed both fainting spell flips. I knocked out a Flygon lv. X with Nidoqueen for my last prize. 3-0

Round 4 vs. Ampharos/Manetric/Blazekin

We both had terribile starts, and I was never able to get Nidoqueen out. He just ripped through all my Pokemon with Manetric and Ampharos, and I couldn’t really do anything to stop it. 3-1

Round 5 vs. DPL

I played Dialga/Palkia/Luxray so many times Saturday that I can’t remember all the details for every game, but basically I won. 4-1

Round 6 vs. Palkia lock

She started with two Mesprit and I had a Gengar out pretty quickly. She never really got setup and I basically swept the game. 5-1

Round 7 vs. Orion Craig w DPL

This was a tough game, and I don’t think either of us expected me to win. I was down on prizes from the beginning, and every time I came close to knocking out Dialga or Luxray he used Poketurn. He hit his Claydol (with unown G) twice with Luxray, so I was able to KO it with Crobat/Poketurn. I hit an important fainting spell flip (finally) to even up the prizes, and I was able to KO Palkia lv. X and Luxray lv. X with Gengar when he ran out of Poketurns. Really great game! 6-1

Round 8 vs. DPL

This was another great game. Every time I thought I had the game, he made some spectacular play out of nowhere to come back. It was pretty close, but I took the game by a prize or two. 7-1

So I made it into the top cut in 3rd cede, sweet!

Blue flight Top 64 vs. Hippowdon

Game 1: He just got a bad start and scooped when I had a strong lead.

Game 2: He got setup this time and it was pretty intense for a while. He kept his hand down on trainers and stacked a bunch of energy on his active Hippowdon, so I was forced to take some prizes off his bench and hope for the fainting spell. I missed the first fainting spell, but I hit the second. I think I drew the last prize with Nidoqueen.

Blue Flight Top 32 vs. LuxApe

Game 1: I don’t really remember the details of this game, but when I hit one important fainting spell flip he shouted and I jumped about a foot in the air.

Game 2: He ran four plus power, so basically I could only get one draw with Claydol before it got knocked out. I had no draw power in either game and struggled to stay setup. I searched for Azelf, which let me know what prizes to draw and saved me in both games. I think I got rid of his hand with Looker’s three times, which slowed him down a lot. Gengar took out Lux X and Nidoqueen swept to finish up the game.

Yay! I’m in the top 32!!!

Sunday

TOP 32 vs. Kingdra/Flygon

Game 1: I took an early lead, we played the game out for a while but he never caught up and decided to scoop.

Game 2: I had an Unown G start against his T1 Kingdra. The game looked hopeless and I thought about scooping to give us a full third game (sudden death against Kingdra is never pretty) but I decided to hold out and see how long I could last. I managed to get my field build up, but I never drew a single prize. Time was called on my turn when he had three prizes left. There was nothing I could do to stop him from drawing a prize on his turn and taking the game. He accused me of stalling, but the judges watching the game said I was playing at a good speed. Close game!

TOP 16 vs. LuxApe

Game 1: He goes first and attaches to Infernape. I get T1 Gengar, but nothing on my bench. He plays Crobat and levels up to KO me.

Game 2: He started with Azelf and I started with Unown G. I went second and played a millon cards. BTS, Roseanne's, Uxie, Luxary Ball, Claydol, three Pokedex, Crobat, Claydol, and on the last two cards I drew into the Warp Point and Gengar I needed to win. Now that's a donk!

Game 3: This actually played out well. We both got setup and this was a really good game. I managed to stay ahead and pick off his Pokemon with Gengar. Nidoqueen gave his Luxray some trouble, and I took the game.

TOP 8 vs. Karl Kitchen w Dialga/Palkia Lock (with Downer Material and Damage Porter)

Game 1: He got T1 Deafen, and T2 and T3 power lock. There was nothing I could do and he won in a few turns.

Game 2: Somehow I managed to pull this game out of nothing. Jason told me when he was watching the game the person standing next to him saw my hand and said, “he’s got nothing, no way he’s taking the game.” I managed to take advantage of a few awesome top-decks and a bad misplay by Karl. It was REALLY close, but I came from behind with some Poketurns and a good Poltergeist to win.

Game 3: This is the most important game of my life and I get a Nidoran start with 2 Haunter, 2 Warp Point, and energy. Wow… I get a Roseanne’s and take Gastly and Uxie. I burn the Warp Points to draw more cards but he sprays Uxie (without ever playing a Cyrus). Time is called when we each have 6 prizes. I try to Pitch Dark him and hope for a miracle, but there is nothing I can do to stop him from drawing the first prize.

Karl won and knocked me out of the tournament. I couldn’t have lost to a nicer player, and I finshed better than I had hoped, so I’m happy. And…

I GOT MY INVITE TO WORLDS!!!
