Donphan Prime counters

No, but it 2HKOs it fairly cheaply while Donphan has massive problems KOing Tornadus (especially when Eviolite is released).

Counters don't have to be OHKOs.

This eviolite card will be used a lot. Good point with the OHKO thing, thanks

So far here is the list of donphan counters:
1.Samurott with Ability
2. Yanmega Prime
3. Beartic
4. Kyurem
5. Tornadus
6. Red Gyrados

any other combos/cards people?

Tentacruel is by far the most effective Donphan counter. It's just not that splashable. In a deck playing DCE and is able to run something to pay for Water, it's hard to pass up. Even only getting 1 or 2 Tentavolves off a game more than pays for itself. The next Donphan can usually only 2HKO it... allowing you to put a dent in it with Hyper Beam.

I never thought Yanmega as much of a hard Donphan counter, maybe a soft one. It can definitely hold its own, and if you're having trouble with Donphan it's a very easy play in any deck.. but it could be better. It's a 3HKO on both sides of the table, not including PlusPowers. If Donphan gets its second attack going, it's even quicker than that.

Slowbro from HGSS #52, it second attack Madkinesis, for :colorless::colorless::colorless: energy, it does 30 damge plus 20 more damage for each :psychic: energy attached to Slowbro. Thats pretty cool a OHKO

As Baby Mario said, Cryogonal is a fairly decent tech.
70 for a water energy and another energy isn't that bad since it one shots Donphan Prime unless it has Defenders or Evolite on it

yea but what are your chances of drawing that one lone water energy in your deck. It could be at the bottom of your deck or it could be your prize card. Still it is a good tech

According to the translation, Eviolite only works for Basics.

Obviously depends what deck you run, but Rainbow Energy or even Energy Exchanger could solve the problem. If Donphan is enough of an issue for your deck, it would be worth it.

why not just use Aipom from UL? move the energy onto a baby. then next turn, KO the baby.

donphan lists run low energy, and no energy recovery for the most part. so moving it around forces them to use a SSU or seeker in order to attack since they rarely use Energy switch. also, if donphan has no energy, they can't use Machamp's Fighting tag.

it also helps random other matchups. move the rescue energy onto something else that will die very easily, move it onto a different typed pokemon (like moving Magnezone's electric energy onto the ability emboar)

it's just something that's unexpected.

Personally, I think the best Donphan prime counter really depends on the deck.

I ran Shiny Red Gyarados in my Zekrom to fend it off. It worked pretty well, and if you could get the 4 energy on it, it plowed through 4-4 Donphan no sweat at all. I think it is interesting and overlooked.

Cdmeister, Im pretty sure you play Ttar, since you post in the Ttar thread. Maybe with that information, people could help you better. Mandibuzz?

to be honest donphan is one of thee most well rounded cards in this format and there is not much that can counter it

Actually I am trying to build one myself. I dont have the sufficient amount of cards yet but I read other forums on other website formulate my own ideas, post them and see what other people have to say about them. Sure I maybe wrong or right but this is for the glory of Tyranitar Prime. Right now I use the T-tar theme deck but modified heavily. And yes I can use some help as well. I started this tread to see what kind of techs can be used in all sorts of decks.

Smoochum is a lot better if you don't mind the donk. But seeing as Donphan only needs 1 energy to attack and sometimes depending on the deck they have more than 1 energy on it a time it's very unlikely they'd whiff the attack next turn.

Well except you need to run the Psychic energy but depending on the deck it would be okay.

To the OP, my opinion is that Yanmega is the best and only acceptable counter to Donphan. Yanmega pairs well with anything that needs energy to attack and matching the hand size isn't very hard. A lot of decks opt to put a lot of focus on Yanmega because it's such a good card and run Judges and Copycats to ensure hand size remains the same. You can also manipulate hand size with Collector, Junk Arm, etc.

To be honest, the absolute best (imo) Phan counter is Crobat Prime. Splashable? Of course not, but if you are THAT desparate, you could use it.

Samurott is the best counter hands down. Splashable, Ohkos, cant be 2hkoed, only downside is that its a stage 2.
