Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

E-Card Sample?

I don't think many PokeGymers know about my English Pikachu Collection, but what I'm doing is collection one each of every different Pikachu card ever printed in English. Currently there are 46 different ones (including Promos and ones from Sets), 29 of which I own. Everywhere from my Jumbo, Poketour, and W-Stamped to my more common Gym Heroes/Challenge and Neo Genesis Pikachus.

Anyway, one Pikachu I've heard about, but never seen, is the "E-Card Sample" Pikachu. What is it? Is there a scan of it anywhere? What is the story behind this card?

Why do you keep saying that it has "sample" stamped on it?
Dooskoop or Godtrainer, you guys have these cards. Any stamp on them?

The following cards have back as Japanese VS set, English front from the Expedition set with "Sample" printed in the lower right corner of the cards above the number (so it is not stamped, it is a part of the card design) and apparently were printed as the sample for the Expedition set:

002/093 Hoppip
004/093 Koffing
016/093 Pikachu
019/093 Gastly
021/093 Machop
042/093 Machoke
048/093 Chansey
074/093 Rapidash
083/093 Pichu
088/093 Machamp

I myself have only Koffing.

Hmm. News to me. Thanks for the correction.

[Emily Litella] Never mind. [/Emily Litella]

I remember those. They were giving them out at one of those Nintendo conventions when the e-reader first came out.

No, they weren't given out at the convention. Only Hoppip and Pichu (without word "sample") were given out at E3. These were manufactured for the stores like Pokemon Centre at New York so that the store staff can demonstrate the E-reader games and features to customers.

Close enough. :p
As close as a Loudred is to a Blaziken ex.
Both good, but only one makes people go, "ooooooooh".

ok heres the deal to with the sample cards

right before the english release of nintendo first set (the transistion between nintendo and WOTC) there were 13 cards printed up for "sample" reasons

THESE CARDS WERE NOT PRINTED BY NINTENDO OR WOTC
they were printed by creatures inc and just creatures inc i belive
the copyright on the bottom just has creatures inc ( i beleive, i have not look at these for quite some time)

HOWEVER they were given to nintendo to use as samples

each of these 13 cards has the word "sample" in black (not raised) in the lower right hand corner
also of note, is the font and placement of these cards is alittle off from the finnal versions, because i guess they were still debating what to use

there were only 4 sets of 13 produced

the story goes that a person inside Nintendo scoped them up and put them on ebay. (this i can not confirm)

although i can confirm that they were all originaly on ebay by the same seller, all 4 sets.

some were sold individually, some as a set

i bought my first one, rapadash, individually for $120

WHY YOU ASK?

these were the first cards to be produced it the new style, even before the hoppip and pichu promos, besides the fact that i collect all forms of one offs (ps, if anyone as the english VS cards, pm me, well talk...) IT was soooooo cool to be the first to have an "nintendo" card

then they gradually came on ebay one at a time, unill i emailed the seller, and asked him if he had anymore, which he informed me he did. To which i replyed, i wanted to buy an entire set, and to which i did, for an amount that i do not wish to disclose

so in all there are 13 cards
i do not know the list off hand, cause they are in a fire proof safe in NJ and im in MI at college

but i do know of

rapadash
pikachu
pichu
hoppip
and i think lavitar

i would scan, but again, no cards with me.....

hope this helps some

(and NO these are NOT for sale or trade, so dont even ask  )

Wow, I guess these cards are rarer than the pre-release Raichu. :)

(I guess now that it is impossible to ever collect every single English Pokemon card in existance.)

The cards were printed way before the transition - like just before Expedition came out. And since WotC did not print them, they were very interested in them. If memory serves, they were used to promote the e-reader at a special function at the Pokémon Center and given out to participants at this special function.

Rare but not as rare as Prelease Raichu.

Here we go again... Although each seller on e-bay included in the card description that only a few were printed, I know that the certain cards from this set were at least on 10 bids at one time on e-bay. I bought mine from the seller in Italy for $70, who told me that her store got them for demonstartion purpose. PCNY gave away 20 of these sets befor eExpedition came out. There is no Creatures at the bottom of the card, there is only Pokemon. A certain WOTC employee confirmed the background info on these cards on this board and asked if anyone wanted to trade them. A proud owner of the English VS set cards is on this board too, and he told me a year ago that they are worth a few thousand $. Since I didn't have funds, I didn't continue discussion. Once again, there are more than four sets of them.

Note that the Sample cards and Prerelease Raichu should not be considered "released".
One is an error that has, to my knowledge, remained in the posession of WotC employees (or ex-employees).

The sample cards were given out to non-employees, but were not released or awarded to any member of the public.

Collectible? Yes. But they should not be included in a collection described as "released cards".

The English VS set WAS released and only to the very few participants of the TMB 2002 from English speaking countries. Less than a handful of sets, I believe.

As for the samples not being produced by Nintendo: Maybe strictly correct. But only if the Japanese cards are not produced by Nintendo. I examined a Sample Koffing, Japanese Koffing, and English Koffing for the above mentioned WotC employee and in my somewhat expert opinion, the Sample card had cardstock and printing identical to the Japanese card and were produced by the same source.

Not quite sure where the 13 number comes from. The list of 10 Sample cards that Oak listed is complete and correct as far as I know. And also as Oak mentioned, there are certainly more than 4 sets of them. I knew a guy (who has since passed away) who had two complete sets, I have a set and you (Godtrainer) have a set. Oak has a Koffing, so there are at the very least 5 of those. I bought my cards one at a time on eBay from multiple sellers - some in the US, one in Canada and a couple from Europe (I forget exactly where now). The only place I heard of them being given out is the Pokemon Center in NY, but European sellers had them on eBay just as fast as the US and Canadian sellers.

I count 52 Pikachus on my checklist.

you guys are probaly right, as far as more then 4 sets.. That is what i assumed, becuase the only peroson ive beable to talk to about this was they guy that i got my set off ebay from (we all know how reliable those guys can be  )

i do remember that now, yes they were printed BEFORE expedition

and they don only say pokemon on the bottom

there were only 10 (i forgot that i had doubles of some, and most of the time i only count my stack of screw cases that these reside in, so thats where i got the 13 number from)

they are NOT as rare as prerelease raichu
they are NOT as rare as upside down WB mewtoo
they are NOT as rare as english VS
they are NOT as rare as english finnalist tropical wind

i would place a complete set rarer then a set of semi, quater, and top16 tropical wind cards

(ps, who ever has the english VS set, please email me.....SERIOUS money could be exchanged for them  )
